Console Update

In the world of cause and effect, the response from the players did not cause the game to get bugs, did not cause the developers to take too long to fix them, did not cause the developer to stop communicating or stop being as involved with the community, did not cause the developer to ignore feedback (when they bothered to look for feedback), they did not direct fdev to shift the game in a way that led to a 50% reduction in performance ...and they certainly didn't cause fdev to slow new content to a crawl and waste resources implementing game mechanics nobody wanted (exo-biology scanner minigame).

As someone who can't get a PC, this hot garbage news, all my preparation for being able to walk around like PC players out the window god damn man
Look, I have made a personal priority to have a "PC" since the 80's, I don't get one every year. I work toward what I would like. Presently I run a top of the heap i9 with a 3080. I planned for it for over a year. You make your choices. I saved and planned and didn't buy other high dollar items. BTW no eating out either.

Greetings Commanders,

Elite Dangerous is a game close to my heart.

It’s no secret that Odyssey’s launch was less than ideal, including the need to split the PC/console player base to focus on a PC-only launch. Since Odyssey’s release in May 2021, we have worked tirelessly to improve the Odyssey experience on PC, and whilst we have made great progress there is still more to be done. We have been supporting the pre-Odyssey and post-Odyssey codebases since.

Over the last several months, we have been wrestling with the best way to move forward, and it is with a heavy heart we have decided to cancel all console development. We need to be able to move forward with the story of the game, and in order for us to do this we need to focus on a single codebase. Elite Dangerous will continue on console as it is now together with critical updates, but we will focus on new content updates on PC on the post-Odyssey codebase.

We appreciate this news is not what our console community were hoping for. This was not an easy decision to make, but it was made with the long-term future of Elite Dangerous in mind.
I'm very angry, thousands of hours of play, faction in game (capsule corp interstellar), large network of players, many paints purchased, all this reduced to nothing?
You cannot deprive us of the transfer of backups, you have a duty to allow us to transfer our backups.

I'm afraid it is what it is Commanders , will it mean better content for PC ? I'm not honestly sure . It could be that EDO is at its best optimisation now ( which should be worrying for those who do carry on playing ).
Yes EDH continues for now until It's brought in line with EDO. Then ??
I hope it really does get better but my two mantras were "great ideas poorly implemented " and " I have lowered my expectations to an acceptable level of disappointment" and that for me says it all .
Death knell ?
No I don't think so we have too many with too much invested in the game .
Will it get better I don't know ...

It's a real poser isn't it:

Are console owners going to buy new a product which the developers has ceased to develop? Hmmm
Are present console commanders going to stick around in large numbers with their inferior product? Hmmm
Are Frontier going to shut down the console servers when numbers dwindle sufficiently? Hmmm

It might be for the good of the game, but it's not for the good of XBox and Playstation commanders.

Actually it’s not an inferior product, it’s just fomo.

The positives are you get a new ui, and good planet surfaces from the new foot perspective.

Sadly, there are significant negatives that you don’t suffer in horizons. Mainly the visuals of the space game are materially worse, the system requirements to run it at an average expectation probably double or triple the requirements for horizons, excluding many existing players. There’s also no new content in odysee for many people, it’s only a ui and graphics update.

If it was just a performance issue I’d even forgive them but it’s not… space looks like a black wall with white dots, and a significant percentage of planets will trigger you to not believing you’re in space anymore when you see them. “No that can’t be it that’s got to be a bug.”

The only people who are included in odd are gameplay / stat focused players who are finished with the space game and have left it behind, and have upgraded to a mid range plus gaming pc since the nvidia 20xx range.

Not superior.

I'm not surprised, I already doubted their intentions when they choose to prioritize pc development for Odyssey.
Frontier developed a great game but they weren't very good at it, Odyssey went way over their heads so it seems and I cant help but think that even the pc players shouldn't get their hopes up to high regarding the future of ED.

It's a great disappointment, Frontier development that is, I thought the world of them when they came up with ED but time and time again they have proven not to be "that" developer who could make a game the size of ED to be a good stable and player oriented product.

I'll never buy a Frontier game again, there are better developers who do listen to their players.
I've had a good couple years of fun and don't regret my money spent, sadly Fdev has taken away all my reasons to support them in the future.

Fortunatly there are enough alternatives to ED for me, NMS being one of them, alternatives that I don't have to be afraid of of loosing their console development, alternatives made by competent developers.

Signing off,
o7

I disagree with that. If anything, Odyssey has made me appreciate the ship side of things even more, and I (and many others) have been advocating for knitting the ship/foot side together more.

I understand you're not a fan of it, but to toss out anyone who is as someone who's done with the base game, or are focused on stats is incorrect.

(And FWIW, I also disagree with the space visuals being materially worse.)

this game has been about for eva, maybe in future design,or invent a console we all get are stuff back,(vobsole) havent invented it yet ,but likely hood of me and 90percent of others buying 3 grand computers are slim.hopes a good thing shawdempts redemption

It’s worth remembering that Frontier haven’t been developing for consoles for months. So the ‘new focus’ is not new at all, it’s just been made official.

So if you expect the pace of development for the Windows version to accelerate, why? All available resources were already directed at the Windows version. Nothing has changed other than commanders now know that what was temporary is now permanent.

I'm on PC, but I feel for the console players who must be terribly disappointed. FDEVs must try and minimise the pain as much as possible - many console players will already have PCs and others will be buying PCs in the future. FDEVs could reduce the trauma by porting across all ships and engineered modules rather than just cash for those players moving to PC - if this is too difficult then work out a reasonable basic engineered ship and module configuration for everyone porting across - maybe 5 or 6 fully engineered ships and a full load of materials and data. Maybe multiplying their cash x2 would help too.

And what happens when the profiles get deleted?

Profiles wont get deleted unless players delete those themselves, or maybe on consoles if ED:Horizons DLC goes offline on PC also (both PC and console Horizons are synced) at some point in the future.

Nothing practically changed, just that we now know consoles will not get Odyssey DLC.
