Console Update

Greetings,

So as a PS4 Pro to PS5 Commander.
Who pre-ordered the Deluxe Version of Elite Dangerous that came with Horizons.
Does this mean we'll be finally getting our Cobra MKIV's now as compensation?
Perhaps even the return of Ascendant Flight Suits to the Holo-Me store?
I would at minimum expect those as parting gifts from FDev. 🤔
I mean you just killed the Console Versions dead and all.
Did you contact Bioware and EA to get tips on how to devastate an entire playerbase like they did with Anthem?

Well that's all from me for now.

Fly Safe Commanders! o7

I am perfectly happy that FDev cannot continue to support Consoles but..................

Please come up with a way to transfer ALL of our PS4 and X Box accounts to the PC. Personally I have bought another PC copy of ED and installed it so I have done my bit - I have played on PS4 3 years, I have invested time and real cash in modifying ships with ARX, I have spent countless hours grinding materials and engineers, it is morally, ethically and possibly legally dubious not to provide a way to transfer all of this to the supported platform if you guys pull support for PS and Xbox. Merely allowing credits to transfer is not good enough and you know it, the grind was set up by you guys in the first place.

Just for once guys show some moral backbone and find a way to make this right with Console players.

Thanks

Jonah Lloyd

I suppose this is good news for some... now that the game will only be on one platform (let's be honest, the consoles servers will be completely depopulated or shut off on due time)... I suppose it's time to make all of ED Open Only.

I've always been against that before because multi-platforms made it pointless, but here we are.

Haha, that argument was well before consoles!

Personally I would have rolled back to the Horizon codebase and then gone from there, if Odyssey with all its bells and whistles causes so many issues by adding the onfoot gameplay (basically its taking the SRV out and putting some of the player controls and weapons in and allowing higher detailed buildings which the player can go into etc ) then there is some serious issues with it. Having played the game I can see the changes they have made to go from Horizons to Odyssey, its a shame that sometimes the best course of action is to kill off everything.

RIP Mac, 32bit, and now XBox and PlayStation. At this rate we are the last 20% of the game lets hope they can get it running well on PC or we might be next as there is a very very small margin now for error

The issue is mate that most PC players (and i include myself) see this as a positive move for the development of the game.
I honestly feel for console folks for whom this is a massive kick in the undercarriage as ive been through many games myself that have shut down after i have invested time and money.

Yeah a smaller number of players in a "live service game" is a positive...

I was being sarcastic (in favour of NMS if you look at previous posts). It is being suggested that "console versions bring it down". Yet NMS can run on new consoles, whilst still running on old hardware - that was my point.
NMS does have multiplayer, and you can meet up with multiple players (PS4 players with PS4VR players and PC players!) and visit other peoples bases they have made.

So why can't ED do that?
Bad coding.

I am interested in learning what development lessons FDev is going to take away from this, as we move to the future. This whole console debacle is an indicator of larger issues originating from within the management of the company. Do not direct hate at the devs themselves. They do what their management tells them to do.

As a community, we've lost three promised goals: Mac, VR, Console.
The promised "included communication" from the CEO himself lasted a few months, now really nothing.
The Odyssey release was a dumpster fire, most likely because unrealistic promises were made to the cash cows and community, again probably from the CEO/Board.

I think FDev needs to have a civil, honest sit-down with the community and tell us what has happened, why, and how this will shape the future of how the company interacts with the playerbase. Less overpromising would probably be good for starters. Fans need to stop holding Mr. Braben in this godly light; he needs to step in and have a frank talk with the people who support the game and the company. And by "frank," I do not mean corporate rhetoric which is saying nothing by saying a lot.

We love this game and we want to see it flourish, all of us.
Under promise=then deliver exactly what you were planning to deliver is the stuff of agreat company

This 👇 should answer your question... seems quite clear
Well, it would if the thread title was something like “ED future plans major rethink”, but the title is focussed solely at console users (with whom I greatly sympathise!). HOWEVER the statement you highlight is the one I’m querying, because it suddenly seems to imply FD are also throwing PC Horizons playerbase out of the game (even if Horizons servers continue to run, if there’s no new content going onto them then what’s the point of playing?). As a dedicated Raxxla Questor I’m with Rochester on this! (https://forums.frontier.co.uk/threads/console-update.600233/post-9769606)

@Paul_Crowther
So I don't think it’s out of line to ask FD to clarify what appears to be an out of context statement in the OP.

Edit: after 5years of very happy playing ED& Horizons, at minimal extra cost, I bought EDO to thank FD for all the good times. Then tried it and thought naff & not for me. It seems very strange to ditch PC Horizons, which is working well, for EDO. Ive not tried it for quite a while, but still.......

I do think fdev should proffer an explanation as to why they pulled the plug on consoles.
As previously posted alot of time and money (arx) has gone into it and now to be told its over with no port over....
Seems harsh...
So yes a detailed explanation perhaps to avoid a lawsuit
Please don't engage in this kind of rhetoric. There's no lawsuit that can be filed to force a company to release a game unless it has already been pre-ordered and even then the only result would be a refund. Arx purchases are for the game you currently play, which for console owners is Horizons so that's no dice either. All it adds up to is increasing the drama for no good reason.

The only thing there that was dropped years ago was Mac support. EDH can continue to be enjoyed in VR and on consoles.

Source: Have VR and Console and can still play both.

Yes, it is still playable in EDH but they are not going to invest into EDO anymore, which to me means it is going to die sooner or later. Apart from many players having milked the fun out of EDH profoundly in the last couple of years and being eager to see some additions, the mere knowledge that the game is actually developing further but not for your system is a psychological blow which will drive many users away. That's just how such things work, unfortunately. All of a sudden it feels like an old iPhone, like you are still playing with PS3 while PS5 is available. If there wasn't the knowledge of the newer, shinier toy, you might view it differently, but this ruins it a bit.

And let's be honest - we know that anything necessitating significant effort to be ported to VR will not happen; only if it happens to work for VR anyhow, then will the wealth be spread to us VR users.

So does this mean we can expect a similar announcement for VR?

(oh and no, the current "sollution" isn't acceptable by any stretch of the imagination)
No, because they will reserve the option to release new content for VR where they are re-using assets already capable of supporting VR.

But then again, do I really believe this means they are going to at least really push to revitalize the game in flat on PC ? Unfortunately no. I consider it most realistic to assume that the drop in their share price due to the commercial failure of EDO means that they have taken the business decision to reduce the efforts on this IP to a minimum. From a purely commercial perspective, I can even understand it. I just firmly believe that they underestimate the potential the game offers, and unfortunately had no clue how to unleash this potential. Opening the game to 3rd party content creators paired with a potent SDK would have been one of the strategic shifts the game would have needed to unlock its next level - let others do the work and take your 30% share, that would have created some revenue and drawn many players back to the game, even attracted new ones.

Alas, not likely to happen. Hopefully us VR users can still fly around in EDH for a couple of years, so I can occasionally enjoy that.
