Console Update

Doesn't impact me due to my new hardware, but if it did, I would go and upgrade my computer without frothing at the mouth about how technology marches forward and requires investment to keep up. If a PC gamer can't afford hardware to address new technology changes, they adapt by either 1) Not playing it because they can't 2) Not playing it because the performance is below their standards 3) Playing it at reduced performance.

Or I suppose I could be a console gamer and just assume my console is going to magically play everything flawlessly from here until the heat death of the universe.

Gaming is a luxury, not a right, and you need the $$$ to play.
It’s almost as if FDev never put out an Odyssey trailer for console or anything. I guess I’m not really watching the Odyssey trailer on the official Playstation Youtube channel or anything. Phew. For a second there I thought all of those things happened and were promised. o7

CTRL ALT D-ELITE

Yeah, and they’ve already dropped the ball on that one.

It’s more or less too late for the vast majority of console players who left ED for good within the past 24 hours, I doubt many who remain, would take up the offer over the handling of this situation.
I really hope FDev expected a massive departure of console players as a result of this news. No one in their right mind would expect them to stick around after being told they don't matter anymore.

Sad news for console players, good news for the game... developement can probably speed up a lot more.

That said, you can't do an announcement like this without a solid plan for how console players can transfer all their assets to a PC and continue from there, if that is what they would want to do. Throw in a free key for Odyssey as well. That is the least FDev should do, imho.

Greetings Commanders,

Elite Dangerous is a game close to my heart.

It’s no secret that Odyssey’s launch was less than ideal, including the need to split the PC/console player base to focus on a PC-only launch. Since Odyssey’s release in May 2021, we have worked tirelessly to improve the Odyssey experience on PC, and whilst we have made great progress there is still more to be done. We have been supporting the pre-Odyssey and post-Odyssey codebases since.

Over the last several months, we have been wrestling with the best way to move forward, and it is with a heavy heart we have decided to cancel all console development. We need to be able to move forward with the story of the game, and in order for us to do this we need to focus on a single codebase. Elite Dangerous will continue on console as it is now together with critical updates, but we will focus on new content updates on PC on the post-Odyssey codebase.

We appreciate this news is not what our console community were hoping for. This was not an easy decision to make, but it was made with the long-term future of Elite Dangerous in mind.

I would suggest giving console players a one-time port option, with no time limit on using it, to port their games over to PC. It just seems the least you could do. That gives them a chance to continue on with their accounts on PC at any time, you know, because PCs are expensive, and so are consoles. It might help mitigate the blow somewhat, but it's not going to help everyone.

A quick heads up to all console players if u do decide to transfer to pc u have to start from scratch and Get all you ships and engineers unlocked and everything again so the years u put in to the game you have to put back in to the game

Hi All,

Note that nothing has been announced regarding account transfer from console to PC beyond previous posts by FD community staff who have said it is under consideration.

Forum users posting incorrect information about a facility which does not currently exist, will have their posting privileges curtailed.
I transferred my account to the pc had to start from scratch but I transferred my money and my account over to the pc

So far from what they updated 5 months ago it’s still the same note I do my research before posting so I know what I’m saying is currently what happens if accounts are transferred at the time being

Well of course it is, because they haven't announced anything yet. However, one of the CMs has said it's under review. So to do it now, may be in advance of something more robust.
I agree if console players who can transfer to pc would be better wait for more updates but I know my PS4 squad are debating not undocking witch is sad coz they was a grate laff and helpful to all new starter

What's getting conflated is not the console asset to PC credit transfer that FDev offers, but that for a short period of time, XBOX and PC could share full asset game saves. That was several years ago and was removed because it was unintentional functionality.

I believe that is what Slopey is referencing as an off limits topic at this time.

No - I'm aware of that - and hopefully that gives console players some hope that a transfer is possible - although I have no idea if that's the case - I'm just a player like anyone else. (not an FD employee remember).

My point was merely that nothing has been announced (I know, I know...) as regards a possible account transfer. A current mechanism exists, but use it at your own risk - it may or may not be premature. I don't know. Nobody knows as yet aside from FD, and you'll need to wait for them to see if there's another option.
