Console Update

Hey, Dave, have you changed your mind yet? The least you can do is FIX Elite on PS5 since PS4 Pro Elite remained broken.

Also, I can guarantee you knew fine Odyssey was never coming to console as early as the delayed released of the game even on PC last year! There was no way that the game was running even remotely acceptable on last gen consoles considering the PC release being a mess.

Anyways this isn't just the end of Elite for me if full save transfer is refused, it will be the end of Frontier for me. I'm happy I helped your company and Elite in particular with 100's of pounds in support over the years across 3 platforms, but I won't be forced to pay for duplicate cosmetics yet again on PC from my PS4 save, let alone go through the grind all over. Did that for you already coming from Xbox to PS4. Never again!

Reverse course and wise up with this decision. Your shares will thank you for it, since there's a very good chance console commanders would have invested in the update - even those who left Elite dude to DLC stagnation.

Space needs stars, otherwise it lacks distinctions and light. Do you want to supernova your fan base? We're your Stars, and our light shines brightly for you. Why the hell else did we tolerate so many botched decisions and updates over the years?

You're just throwing us to the trash here. Sad times.

Yes he puts his point well, unfortunately its completely flawed as far as UK Law goes.
Do you really think Fdevs Legal team didn't look at this?

It kind of reminds me of the time BT was caught doing something naughty, and their response went something like...

"We knew what we were doing might be illegal so we had a crack team of lawyers check it out, and it turned out that it wasn't"

Sorry if this question has already been answered but there’s 99 pages of it now! Will consoles still have CG and Galnet or has that all gone for good?

As both share same servers, very likely that console Horizons will go on as long as PC Horizons, and have same stuff as it has (now)

Just that there will be no more new stuff for both Horizons on PC or console, as they focus with story in PC Odyssey (and I bet it has something to do with permit locked area near Maia at Col 70 where Thargoids are active nearby, I would guess methane Thargoid planets and ground/space combat there in EDO, perhaps even opportunity to attack their bases in space and ground).

Remember we don't know exactly when the decision was finally made though. David's statement is so brief it feels to me like they've been agonising over it for a bit but have only now decided to bite the bullet, possibly only at a meeting that very day. They would have anticipated the fallout, including people wanting to transfer their accounts, so I would expect they'll provide further advice on that soon.....or they better as the longer they leave that the more irate people will get than they already are.
Sometimes difficult decisions must be made, I get it. I'm just tired on how this was handled: It went from 'console-EDO delayed in order to fix PC' (nothing wrong with that) to 'console-EDO and console/Horizon dev. cancelled' with essentially nothing but silence and 'nothing to announce' for months between the two. The issues leading to this decision must have occurred a while back, so little transparency about the issues might have softened the blow (a little). If they expected a fallout, Braben should have alluded that further info is coming.

This. If I do ever buy a gaming PC, it won't be to play Elite Dangerous.
Yes I have just bought one but I too am reluctant unless full profile transfer is possible. On another note I am still struggling to fathom why this game is so demanding and poorly optimised to rule out consoles and to still chug along on high spec pcs after 10 updates! If a game like msfs2020 can run on xbox series consoles, then nothing other than poor management/development should hinder this game from coming to current gen xbox and ps 5 - the aforementioned simulator being far more graphically intense and detailed, whilst none of the graphics or gameplay in odyssey are particularly cutting edge or comparable by any standard. Regardless of consoles this game has always had significant issues after any update, which seems to point more to capability of fdev than the console codebase excuses given.

I was thinking a bit more about this situation last night, and sunk into the following train of thought:

They have pretty much cut off two streams of potential revenue, as who in their right mind would continue playing and purchasing Arx on consoles now, whilst another platform improves and moves forward, that bitter taste whilst we on Console are running BGS or whatever against factions running Odyssey BGS & whatever, pulling their much better BGS levers against us.

It’s not worth continuing on console if you are a BGS player, especially an Anarchist.

I had planned to buy Odyssey on Console, and then purchase some Arx packs to get some weapon paints, suit paints/styles and maybe some more bits for my ships, but that’s all gone now...
There must have been a lot of players also ready to do the same, but now will no longer do so, all that money lost, all that love & hope for the studio damaged.

It didn’t have to end like this, and it shouldn’t have ended this way on Console.

There’s lots of noise here, amongst it is the calls for effort to be spent in account transfers.

Yet the thread trying to show numbers and give weight to this request has had the grand total of 12 people in as many hours.
Quite a few players left for good on Friday/Saturday, I’ve added my post to that. But I think the thread (as excellent as it is) was opened too late to catch the initial fallout.

Rackham’s Peak in HIP 58832 would make for an excellent fleet carrier graveyard, as it can only be accessed via carrier. This functionally locks the system down and makes it our graveyard, with us drinking booze until the end of time…or at least until full transfers from console to PC that include ranks, legacy modules, engineering, Arx, Arx purchases, etc.

Consider this journey our final event fellow console commanders.

Sounds like something that can get you banned from Reddit 😂

Of course companies lying doesn't make it ok and we should indeed demand better
Actually, governments should make it illegal for companies to lie, with prison sentences for shareholders etc that allow it (IMHO).
It will transfer only the assets value in cash (no ranks, no unlocks, no materials, no progress of any kind) then it will delete the source account.
I hope they will come up with a more appropriate transfer (since they're dropping consoles) in the near future
I was thinking about this (Disclaimer: Not a programmer), but Fdev have all the info on every player on their servers so if it was an easy thing to do, why not do it way back when? Maybe there is a technical reason they've not been able to offer this.
As both share same servers, very likely that console Horizons will go on as long as PC Horizons, and have same stuff as it has (now)
we need to focus on a single codebase.
So, not very long at all then (PC Horizons is being rolled into PC Odyssey). Not to say Consoles won't get CGs etc as Fdev neglected to specify.

O.k. if you're serious about wanting this information anyway I'll put out a short analysis:

1. Frontier has, over time made representations (given information) that Odyssey would be available for consoles as part of the Elite franchise and IP.

2. A consumer buys EDH (folded now to just ED) for their console because there is a presumption that Odyssey is going to be available at some point in time. (This could be very difficult for Frontier to defend against as it can't be proved that anyone who bought ED after the announcement of coming Odyssey didn't buy it with the anticipation of the Odyssey being delivered at some stage. Additionally the menu screen, at least for the PS4 version I have, has a patch/update identifier that states "Odyssey Compatibility Update" which has been there as long as I can recall that further reinforces the presumption that Odyssey is coming to the consoles).

3. The representations made by Frontier on console stores are now unfulfilled because Odyssey DLC for console and ED console support has been withdrawn which could create an impression that Frontier's representations were false and misleading console customers who bought the game after the announcements that Odyssey was going to come to consoles. (How long ago was that now?)

The above could be construed as a breach of Consumer Law in the relevant jurisdiction (UK). Therefore there is a potential cause of action that may argue for restitution (refunds).

If someone thinks the above hypothetical fits their current position as a consumer of Frontier's products:

Sony Playstation also has a European office I believe.

.... and I'm done I think.
I appreciate the post, I just disagree with the analysis. Ian's response I think sums things up very well.

The simple fact is a company changing it's mind on which platforms or products it is going to release in the future, before accepting orders/pre-orders in particular, is not going to be legally liable because of the change. Console Horizons owners did not enter into any legal contract with fdev for Odyssey. PC purchasers of Odyssey have, and have certain rights on that basis.

Yep that's right. Frontier Developments have the right to treat their customers however badly they want. Well done for pointing that out. Yer a genius
Actually they are not treating those of us on PC badly, it may actually benefit us so your statement is partly wrong

2 years servers running at most, maybe 3 or 4 for PC players.

I'd wager that's a good estimate. Closing the doors on console could be the warning flag to all PC players that the doors will be closing in general relatively soon (ie: a few years from now).

Think about it. Console players can still play Horizons in the same shared galaxy as PC players, that means the same background simulation. The only way that can continue going forward is if the PC version (Odyssey) doesn't change much at all from here on out, because if it did that would make it super hard to keep the console and PC (two different code branches) both linked to a single background sim.

Sure PC will go forward having Space Legs, but this feature has very little added gameplay value compared to what Horizons already includes. Space Legs is mostly foot combat with very little new "gameplay" for the core of ED, and I'm betting that's how it will remain.

One of two things will happen going forward:

1) The PC version (EDO) continues to get large amounts of new development, transforming & improving the game so much it makes keeping the Console version (EDH) linked to the background simulation impossible, thus FDev will eventually shut down the console servers completely.

OR

2) EDO gets very little new content from here on out and goes into "maintenance mode", thereby keeping the current EDO & EDH linked background simulation wise, so both versions of the game can stay online generating ARX revenue at very little cost to FDev. Elite Dangerous stagnates and slowly dies until FDev shuts the servers down one day for good.

Give how the game is over 8 years old now, and clearly there are code issues deep into the game making development extremely difficult, I feel option 2 is the most likely from here on out. Dropping console support could very well be a major step in this direction.

To all console players who want to migrate to pc or considering it.
we all are upset about the game moving forward only on pc and frankly, some pc players can give you reactions that are not what you expect.
If you are willing to migrate, go to the thread that I created.
There is no need to get more upset by some comments posted here.
I'm not telling you what to do, but there is no need to start a chat war here either, it will not solve anything.

It's quite telling that no one (with one exception, which was just a funny meme) has responded to a rather interesting post by Bottom Hat, buried somewhere in the depths of this thread. I'll try to find it, hold on....

or go directly to the link at the bottom of his post:

The request was:

Can I transfer my assets or commander between PC, Xbox One and PS4™?

This link to a 5 month old response from Frontier support to a request for an account transfer even shows a small glimmer of hope for you all, but also that transferring to PC accounts seems anything but trivial - and yet doable, at least not completely impossible. But no one has reacted seriously, as if everyone is only here for the really big feelings and of course, if their own wishes and hopes can't be satisfied, they have to talk up the grandiose doom for everyone and the entire game.
Just let it rest, your comments sometimes don't help the cause. It is easy to understand that console players are upset and some may not have the strength to keep their cool in the chat... because they are really upset. But talking down on them or minimizing their feelings about the potential loss of a game they love will not solve anything.
