Constant Sensor/HDMI disconnects - getting ridiculous now

Constant Sensor/HDMI disconnects - getting ridiculous now [SOLVED - I hope...]

I saw a thread on this elsewhere but from some while ago. Anyone else getting this? I get about 5 mins playtime in ED before either the Sensor disconnects, or the Headset disconnects. In both cases for just a couple of seconds, but enough the ruin the session forcing a close down of ED and then restart. It happens ONLY in Elite. Never, ever (not even once) in any other Rift game/experience. I've tried a full Rift re-install, validated all the ED files. Repositioned the sensor, tried different ports for the USB. When I first got the Rift it was ok - but over the last 2-3 weeks it's got worse and worse.

Not only that, I've also upgraded the mobo and CPU (running with an i7 6700, unclocked, on an ASUS Pro-Gaming mobo). With a GTX1070. And the Inatek PCIe USB card. Really couldn't gain any more specs, and this is now really getting on my proverbials to the point where I can no longer use the Rift for ED.

Getting worryingly close to launching eBay and then waiting until the next Gen, or possibly trying the Vive instead.

Any other ideas I could try? The 1070 only has a single HDMI port so I don't have any options there.

Is your power mgmt. turned off? In device manager select each usb hub and controller and also the rift sensor. Right click and select properties of each. Select the power mgmt. tab. Untick "allow computer to turn off this device to save power". Just a thought as this is often the cause of your issue.

What else is plugged into the Inatek USB 3.0 card? My sensor wouldn't be recognized when my X52 HOTAS was also plugged into it, so I moved mlthe HOTAS to a motherboard USB port and all has been good.

Genius. About 10 minutes after posting I came across a couple of lines in Reddit somewhere suggesting similar. Sure enough, the USB ports were set to 'sleep' when inactive. I changed them all (both the Oculus device as well as USB ports) et voila - an hour so far of trouble free ED. I can't tell you how wonderful that feels!

Only thing I noticed is that the Inatek card resets it back on reboot, so I'll need to remember to change it as part of my ED startup process. Might even run it off the mb direct now (I'll bet that was the problem in the first place).

Many thanks for the ideas all.

Well, that didn't quite solve it. The next day it was back to resetting every 5 mins, despite the power management options. Not only that I was working on the pc with the Rift on the desk (ED not running) - and sure enough, every 5 mins I could hear it disconnect/reconnect. So this time I pulled both sensor and headset out of the Inatek and back on to the mb ports, again with the power mgmt settings applied. Lucky's Tale ran flawlessly for over an hour, and then ED for about the same.

I really don't know what's going on here - it seems that my system may have something in it that is interrupting the ports somehow. Fairly sure it is not the Rift/Sensor itself which is at least a relief. I'll see what happens later...

I had 3 Oculus Rifts...all returned due to constant sensor disconnects. In all I spent 6 weeks trying to correct this infuriating problem and gave up eventually before I ended up in an asylum! I honestly tried everything to get the thing(s) working properly. Many times I thought I'd cured the problem only for it to gradually return and make using the rift too frustrating to use. This is a widespread problem and I feel that Oculus are in denial regarding it. Many will say there must be something wrong with my system if 3 units were giving the same problem, all I can say is that my system easily meets the required spec, is well maintained, and runs everything else perfectly. I also purchased the Inatek USB board which seemed to make little or no improvement regarding this problem.

I loved ED and DCS with the Rift. I'll be waiting for CV2.

Sounds like you've been especially unlucky Latitude. In my case (and with the caveat of 'so far'), once I set the power mgmt in the device manager AND moved the connectors off the Inatek and back on the mb, it seems to be solid: no drop outs or other disconnects. I'm still very nervous every time I put the Rift on though, but when it works it is so sweet. Hope you get yours figured out eventually.

Yeah, I had the same. Running the sensor 3 of one of the front panel USB's was the reason why - running of the main USB's (3.0, obviously) on the mobo is what sorted it for me.

I believe I saw somewhere that Elite is in a rather odd position, namely that Elite compared to other stuff, is so efficient, that if you have any hibernation/sleep or similar settings on your computer, they can be triggered by Elite, where other games apparently, do not give the computer enough breathing space compared to what they are doing. Or maybe it is, simply that Elite doesn't override any hibernation/sleep settings?
Turn off power saving features, both in general windows settings but also in nvidia settings, setting to prefer maximum performance.

I used to have the same issue, but now I only very rarely get disconnected.

I played around a lot with the power settings to disable all power saving for usb devices (both in Device Manager and in Windows Power settings), switched the sensors on another USB controller from the HMD (my motherboard has a separate internal USB 3 connector). I also upgrade from 8gb RAM to 16gb. I'm not sure which of these (or if any) actually fixed it, might also just have been software updates.

The only issue I have now is that if I remove the headset for 5 minutes for bathroom or smoke break and resume playing it is guaranteed to disconnect within 5 minutes of playing.

I got myself the Inateck card for christmas (https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00B6ZCNGM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_ep_dp_OT6AybZQ1XRZ2).

Prior to that everything had been running perfectly (I was just running very low on spare USB sockets). Once I had the new card fitted I figured I'd use it exclusively for the Oculus components (headset, two sensors and the xbox controller dongle) and moved them all accordingly. Soon after that I had similar experiences to those described here (disconnects along with the windows sounds that indicate USB devices being unplugged and reconnected).

At the weekend I moved my main headset connector out of the Inateck card and into a separate 2-port USB 3 socket on the back of my PC (a separate card that came with the PC).

That seems to have fixed it.

Finding the perfect combination of which device to plug into which USB port is a bit oif a black art to be honest, all I can suggest personally is trial and error.
