Control panels are so 90's..

If you have a few tablets laying around, you can build your own touch screen panels with ROCCAT Power Grid.
But yes, even with control panels, you still need to learn a lot of the key bindings, because sometimes you may need to use them.

What is up with the graded shading on moderator posts - doesn't look good at all.
On topic though, I pretty much eliminated the keyboard with Voice Attack. That plus HOTAS works well.

Do you have "show signatures" disabled by any chance? The flare only displays when I consciously switch my sig off.
Yup, I've got no interest in doubling the length of threads to see repeated e-peen signatures
For ED (and other VR games) I only use the programmable buttons on my HOTAS and augment them with additional support from Voice Attack (as the keyboard and any aux keypads would be difficult to use with an HMD on).
For other (non-VR) games I use a Belkin N52TE programmable gamepad and just map the games default keys to to the buttons I want. I never change the game's default key mapping - just make a unique gamepad profile for each game. This way, if I re-install the game, or run the game in multiple locations or PC's, then I just need to load the profile and I'm ready to go.
I think the N52TE has largely been discontinued but here are some other similar programmable gamepads:

Ditto - more buttons than I know what to do with.

Used a n52te myself until I got around to a HOTAS. Never thought about leaving it attached for other buttons.
I found one of these in my spare parts bin a couple of weeks back and despite the latest drivers being for Vista!!!! It works perfectly with W10.

Those Thrustmaster Cougar MFDs look interesting. Too bad they aren't true MFD's.
Another way of helping you remember the key binds is getting a keyboard like the Logitech G810.
You can set individual colours for each key (or group of keys) which helps me know which ones I've set.

Well, 'couple' couples the 'heat sink' and the 'shield cell' button via a relais. One of these things that seem like a good idea during the design phase but are kind of 'meh' when finished. If both are triggered simultaneously then the heat sink is is to early since the shield cell needs 5 second to warm up. So first you get frozend and then fried.
