Converting from Xbox One to PC a good Idea? Secondary thread

This is a secondary out look to the original thread in Xbox forum:

I'm currently an Xbox One user as far as Elite Dangerous goes. however, I'm thinking of switching to a PC version of the game sometime in the future. But before I do that, I need to know the pros and cons of such a move.

I also have a question for the Devs about this; If I make the switch, am I able to keep the profile/charactor/avaitar on my Xbox One (along with any and all saved progress/data/etc.) and transfer it over, or am I going to have to start all over (which would really stink BTW)?

Any Imput would be nice.

If you make the switch you start over from scratch; even if you link the PC account to your xbox one. I did it (from PC to Xbox) and I'very only played on xbox since. Let me explain why; Open.

In open on PC it was kinda hostile. You get ganked in anything smaller than a python pretty much. It happened too often and I missed making friends in SC or in a Rez and winging up with randoms, instead you kinda have to play like you're avoiding people.

On xbox I've had the complete opposite experience. I can go into popular areas and be safe. Other CMDR'S rarely go after me and I can wing up with randoms pretty easily due to party chat. There's still gankers, but people seem to band together more than fight randomly. It's a better experience gameplay wise imo.

If you're buying/building a new PC, you're going to see a major performance jump. In my experience, the Xbox can struggle in some areas, especially busy planet instances.

Also, on PC, you're going to have access to things like a HOTAS, which is the best way to play IMO, and other neat gadgets such as head tracking. Also, being able to bind commands to the keyboard is fantastic.

As for starting over, well as already said, you'll have to start over. Don't worry, it's refreshing.

Yes, switch. Control options and load times. I boot up the Xbox version periodically and it's great that it really is the same game.......... but with even more waiting (worse galaxy map and mission board loads). It was difficult to throw away the progress with that commander but I'm glad I did.

Assuming you have a halfway decent PC, there are no downsides beyond the extra purchase. Only huge benefits.

Even starting over isn't enough of a setback to be considered a downside in my opinion. Once you've spent a decent amount of time in the game going from a sidewinder to something you can really start playing seriously in like an Asp or a Vulture only takes a few hours, it's laughably easy.

I would say that isnt entirely accurate, although the sheer level of salt isnt as bad on the xbone...I have accounts in both and play both depending on what Im doing and mood, although its pretty much been console only past month or so.

Depending on how much yer prepared to spend, a decent spec pc will make this game look significantly better in terms of gfx.

But...money and what ye percieve as value fer money. That decent spec pc will cost the same as 4 xbones, maybe more and can be an absolute bollox to get running right if ye mess things like drivers up. Although this isnt a huge issue with modern rigs or pre built off the shelf packages...thats more fer diy build yer own types which works out cheaper, but has no warrenty if things go pete tong.

Loading times...I cant decide which is genuinely better fer everyone, but I find console load times marginally faster than pc load times, and both systems run off the same network which just doesnt make sense, but there ye have it.

I made the switch from Xbox to PC last week and I haven't looked back. The visuals are are jaw dropingly different, and the entire experience is smoother. Plus, VR.

You lose every bit of progress, but Frontier support will do a direct credit transfer off your in game assets to your new PC account. If you open a ticket and copy and paste the following statements, they'll transfer your money as soon as they see it:

"We can only transfer wealth (credits) from an account. DLC, Frontier Points, rank, merits, cargo and other in-game progress made cannot be transferred and will have to be re-earned or repurchased.
Wealth transfer can only be done once and cannot be reversed.
After confirmation, your CMDR on your prior platform will be removed and cannot be restored.
After confirmation, the CMDR on your chosen platform will have their credit value updated."

Worked great for me

Didn't even know they would do this much. +Rep for quality, obscure and very useful information.

Totally correct. +1 :)

Personally to the OP I'd say start over as PC is the platform you want to play.

If you decide to go back to xbox (play with a mate or whatever) starting fresh will put you off, it'll be one more barrier to you going back. If you keep your account you can start fresh on PC and have the enthusiasm to pull that new cmdr into a good shape and presumably enjoy flying a few ships you missed etc.

never entertained any gaming console. though I do have a ps3 for playing a game called split/second velocity. 2nd fav game ( pc ver is no longer supported) unable to play online. unless use a vpn. then hackers are the problem.
I have been a pc gamer since early 90s. I have seen plenty of gaming consoles perform and they have nothing on a pc. so I would say dump ps4/xboxone, invest in a medium to high end gaming pc. building it yourself will save on the cost for good equipment. plus I prefer things that I can do multiple things with at the same time. the gaming consoles of today are good for only gaming. upgrading to next gen console, buy it all. upgrading a pc, buy a part.
I could give other reasons why pc is better that consoles but. its not allowed:

Looks wise it's amazing on PC, much better than console. Load times on console are much longer in every aapect ive found. Galaxy map, system map, pause, SLF, loading the game; pretty much everything. I'd admit to that. The controls with the controller are also more limited than both K/M or a HOTAS; all of that is true.

I was speaking community interaction wise; I just find the Xbox community less hostile from my experiences and more friendly with open arms. Granted there are still hostile people, just less from what I've seen. This may be due to the smaller player base though.

You are going to have to start a new save since there is currently no way to copy your XB1 save over to the PC and vice versa. That is about the only CON I can think of actually. Depending on the PC you plan to use or build, the performance improvements can be rather dramatic. It is looking like the GTX 1080ti is going to be announced next month, so whatever you do DO NOT BUY A GPU RIGHT NOW! WAIT until the 1080ti announcement at CES. Even if you are not interested in the ti yourself, its introduction will likely have a cascade effect on GPU pricing across the board. Happened with the 980ti, so no reason to expect a different result this time around.

Back to the differences...

You don't even need to relearn your XB1 controls since you can play on the PC with an XB1 controller no problem. I play my PC version with an Xbox One Elite Controller with the chatpad attachment, which I find a superior experience to the XB1 controller, and in the case of the Elite controller, even my HOTAS.

This is mainly because on the PC version, all the keys on the XB1 chatpad can me mapped to the same key bindings as a standard PC keyboard. This gives me the same control experience I have on the XB1 plus the addition of all the key bindings only the PC version has access to. The Elite controller also gives me additional control points that I can use to run my throttle and fire group changes without changing hand positions. And once you are able to fire off a SCB or Heatsink by pushing a button on the chatpad, you are never going to be able to settle for paging through screens to find the same launch button in the middle of a dogfight! ;)

Load times is another major difference... I run my Windows 10 OS and all my games off a Samsung 950 Pro M.2 NVMe SSD, which reduces the load times of this game to either instantaneous, or no longer than 1-2 seconds max. You simply can't match that on the XB1.

Over time, I have played the XB1 version less and less, to the point that these days, I only play ED on my gaming PC. The difference in performance is also significant since my gaming PC is using enthusiast level components which allow me to run the game in full ULTRA settings with a locked 60fps at 60hz on my 1080p HDTV.

While I could likely get well over 120fps on a traditional 4k computer monitor with my overclocked GPU and CPU, I prefer playing in my living room with a 55" image of the game, which for me has a much more significant impact on my ED gaming enjoyment than the difference between 60fps and 120+fps.

My next upgrade is going to be the 1080ti GPU I mentioned above just as soon as I can get one along with a 60" or 65" 4k UHDTV. I have been holding off on the TV part to see if I can get a native 120hz panel in 2017 vs the traditional 60hz which will limit your GPU's fps to that same value. You also have to shop for low input lag in my case, and yours too if you plan to run your PC rig off the same system as your XB1. I'm currently running a SONY W900 HDTV which has one of the lowest input lag numbers on the planet along with a native 60hz refresh rate.

Let me know if you have any other specific questions on the differences between the two platforms.
