Cost of Horizon vs Star Citizen Price Model

FD made due with just around 3 million before release. And they already gave me a game which is already on my "top games I loved most list" and have been throughly enjoying it for nearly a year now, with even better stuff on the horizon.

I see what you did there...well played.

Some emphasis on "more money".

They made nearly 90 million dollars so far.

I repeat: NINETY FRAKKING MILLION DOLLARS.

Thats almost the Rockstar budget for GTA V. Yet somehow they keep asking people for tons of money... If just feels odd... I confess I already lost all my enthusiasm for SC and I'm having some serious doubts about it. Seems too much like politicians in my country, they keep promising and promising and promising even more but time goes by and I never really see anything. I hope I'm wrong and they still make it, though.

90 million dollars?
Maybe they should pay the FD half the sum and in one year they have the game running; from here they can add to the game anything they want. And i am serious here, it's far from a joke.

There is no possible comparison with other games of Elite "size" that can possible make ED feel expensive in comparison.

Elite, if even if one buys an expansion every single year, cost less than 4$ a month. And if you don't buy any expansion you will always be able to play what you already purchased forever. EVE costs 10$ a month. Stop paying it, you stop playing it. And yet ED is expensive?

The current Elite game, played forever, costs less than half a year of EVE monthly subscriptions. The basic subscription of EVE costs 3 Horizons per year.

As for Star Citizen, its not even close to being a game yet. When, and if, it is ever released, we'll see how it prices in comparison.

Complaining that Elite is too expensive is just whining for the sake of whining. Perhaps FD should give away ED for free...

'Couldn't have put it better myself..I pay £95 a month for my Sky TV & broadband..that means the yearly expansions of this great game effectively cost 2 weeks of rubbish TV, movies & sport (no Champs League-Whisky Tango Foxtrot!)..so to those complaining, get a grip!
Currently, I'm trying to arrange re-mortgage to buy the top end SC package for nearly £11k..I do get to meet Sir Chris Roberts for that!!..and no, for the 1000th time, I wont punch him in the face for you!

So much raised, so little if anything to show for it - I'd guess that sums it up.

Each piece of the puzzle (or module as CIG likes to call them) is being built. Right now we have the combat engine (Arena Commander). We have a place where our ships will be stored and a place to call home (Hangar module), they recently released the Social Module (where you interact with players and NPC's once planetside). The first-person shooter module (Star Marine) is very close to being rolled out any week now And multicrew in the baby PU aka AC 2.0 is soon to follow since the other pieces of the puzzle have to be in place first. Let us not forget the meat and potatoes....like all of the backend work nobody ever talks about since they can't "see it". You know things like heavily modifying CryEngine to do things it was never designed to do, 64-bit architecture, netcode, implementing the zone system, completely redoing the damage system to have full "tear-away" damage, motion capturing animations and replacing old placeholder assets, oh let's not forget directing and film making since there is also a single player campaign aspect of SC. Nah...those things don't take time at all and certainly don't cost money. You can just buy that kind of stuff on Amazon, copy/paste some stuff and it "just works" in a game engine..../s

Can we keep this thread on the topic of comparing pricing models of various space sim games, we don't want to have to close or merge it; thank you.

This just comes off as a hater post. Why do people care how much SC has or is raising? Serious question.

Well, mostly because they will soon hit the mark where they could cure cancer or feed a whole third world country for a decade and yet there's still close to nothing to show for it...I guess.

But they are also giving a very bad example of how much you can abuse a playerbase and, frankly, I don't want the triple A industry getting any ideas.

Umm... what game? I think you need to put that in future tense. Maybe add a possibly, since until it is released with everything they said would be in the base game, its still uncertain.

Yet....

You're right on the first point. It hasn't been released. Point of my post was, when it is released you will get everything (planetary landings, multi-crew, FPS, etc) for the $45 or whatever you decided to spend.

As for the "Yet..." remark: I don't see it happening. They already have plenty of ways to make money after release.

I really don't get the hate for SC at this point. I want any decent space SIM to succeed. We need more games in a fairly niche genre.

The entire SC game can be bought for $36 and you never have to pay another penny. That'll get you the FPS (an ED expansion), running around on planets (ED "season of expansions") and basically everything you'll ever get in ED for one low, low price.

Nobody at CIG held a gun to my head and demanded I spend $900 on a ship...well not yet at least.

I got SC for 60,- euro
It includes a fighter yet, beta acces, arena commander and the base game when it come's out.

You can even get a package starting at 35,- euro. (including a plane and the base game)

In a sense SC can be cheaper then ED if you want to.

I do love to play ED more though atm and have no problem paying for DLC's
I got over 150hours out of the base ED game allready (new player) and that is more then enough for the price you payed.
Remember most games have between 40-80 hours good fun playtime and cost 60,- euro ! (some games are crap, give 12 hours game time and still cost 60,- euro !)

Indeed , backed way back for 35 euros. dunno how sc gonna handle "updates"? anyway the 120 euro life time expansion back in beta wasnt to bad for me. is ed atm 120 expensive , indeed it is. But overtime it will be cheaper and cheaper.

i dont get the hype with sc really , just w8 and see is my motto. i have a org m8 in sc who spend more as 1000 euros on none existing pixel ship ,but money pot is getting dry too ,ppl are stopping buying stuff. Calculating how many ppl work at cig X avg. salary shows tey dont have enough money to proceed end of 2016.

or chris haz some magic or stuff is getting canceled.

For part I'd assume it to be more a matter of frustration that "it's not ready yet!" than hate on any level.

I suppose. I've only been a backer since August of last year, so I'm not as distraught as some. There is always this hint of venom when people talk about SC. It's kind of sad, honestly. I look at these games, (ED, SC, etc) not just as what they are now and what they'll be in the future... But also as the platform for gaming advancements in the future.

In particular, ED and SC are both pulling "firsts" in the gaming industry... And as they progress there will be more "firsts"... Which will in turn push other games further and further.

Wait, did you just say you don't want the AAA game industry to abuse their player base???? I hate to be the bearer of bad news but......you're too late. See EA, Ubisoft, Activision, and many more for prime examples.

Also posting about curing cancer is just wrong man. I know you are trying to be funny about it but there are better jokes to be had. Sorry but cancer is a sore spot for me.

Anyways $90 million is certainly a lot of money but the reality is it's small fish to AAA game development.
CoD MW2 $275 mil
GTA V $268 mil
FF VIII $213 mil
SWTOR $213 mil
Destiny $500+ mil (allocated over years of continued development) / $140 mil for initial year

I didn't mean they don't abuse their customers already.

But that I don't want them to get any more ideas on how to do it and start a new trend.

I spent $60 on Star Citizen, and I regret giving them my money.
I've spent around $200 on Elite, and I am very happy. Game is fun, regular updates and content. It's cool.
I like the way Frontier is doing their business model.

I don't like the way Star Citizen is doing theirs. I think it's slimy. No content or it's broken. P2W business model. Who knows when most of these ships will even be modeled. They'll be riding this for years and years before they consider the game, "released."

I know what you meant. I was just teasing a bit ;)

Unfortunately it's the suits that call the shots and we're on the opposite end of the rod. I think the gaming industry is one of the few industries in the world where its customers are treated like red-headed step children and also openly praised for being them by the suits lol.
