Newcomer / Intro Couple newbie questions

If you go to ta station as a criminal and don't use stealth tactics, the police will scan you, then either they blow you up or you don't realise docking permission has been revoked and get blown up by the station when you go inside. That's what sends you to the penitentiary rather than handing yourself in.

O I C *(thanks Penny) - so does that count as an insurance claim in your stats - is it a "rebuy"? (Even more reason for me to be a good boy. ;) )

It's a rebuy when you get blown up. If you get blown up with a bounty on you, you find yourself clean and in the penitentiary ship minus the cost of the bounty and the rebuy. That's after you've dealt with the rebuy screen.

Thanks everyone so far!
Another question that I wasn't able to google out or figure out what does it mean when I get this message: "You have discovered new astronomical object" or something along those lines... It appeared twice so far and always appeared after I scanned the system, did a FSS and then DSS of a ring of some gas giant. Exactly in this sequence. Afzer the ring was scanned, this message pops up... But that is all, I don't know what object, where to find some details about etc... Anyone has any idea?

And one more: I just got into a system, where there are 4 stars and 12 planets. None of the stars was discovered, I am the first one here (at least none of them has "First doscivered by". Also, most of the planets were first doscovered by me. But two have Discovered by Validating. How is it possible, to be in the system, scanning planets, when the star has not been discovered?

The original scanners worked differently to get your name on a body you had to target it when within scan range, which depended on the size of the body, it was not unknown for people in a hurry to only target things on their path through the system and not turn round to scan the star behind them.

Before the FSS-system came into the game there were 3 grades of discovery scanner with differing ranges (500ls, 1Kls and infinite) when you arrived in the system you did a "honk" of your disco scanner and the system map filled with images of each body within that range. You then had to target a body and approach it to scan it for it to be discovered. So people tended not to bother targeting the star and so it would not be tagged as "first discovered" and similarly they would only target and scan valuable bodies (cherry-picking) so there are loads of systems out there with a few tagged bodies but everything else not.

The "validating" thing is a long-standing bug.

edit - ninja'd ;)

If you look in your Codex discovery section, there are all sorts of things to discover in each sector of the galaxy. When you find one, you get a message. I think the idea is that explorers can get a bucket list of things to find to keep them occupied.

Thank you, I thought that could be the case.. Well, to be honest, the Codex is pretty confusing... There are lot of phenomenons you can discover, but so far I was not bale to figure out what was exactly the phenomenon I have discovered at the exact moment... For explorers, this game really lacks some sensible, well organized handbook, or list, or whatever to make it really easy to see what is just now happening... Also, I just don't understand why the game does not immediately say "You have discovered "THIS""... Well, I guess these small things just drive people to places like these forums and make them communicate with others... :)

Also, so far I was not able to figure out what scanned systems are stored in my ship computer (without visiting a station and going to Cartography service), so that I can have a quick overview of my efforts...

Are you sure about the ship? That would have been the first NPC I've seen (or heard of) in a Cobra Mk.IV - that one was/is a special bonus for early buyers of Horizons IIRC. A Viper Mk.IV on the other hand would have no big trouble in catching up with a DBX.
I have encountered and shot down many Cobra IVs in my bounty huntings and I am sure they are NPCs as I only play Solo.

Never mind.
I thought your post was the last one in the thread so I posted this response.
Now I see that it was not the last one and that others pointed out that there are lots of NPCs on Mk IVs.
