CPU and GPU performance tests in Factions

My Hardware:
4930k @ 3,8GHz HT on
780Ti @ 1124 MHz Ingame
16GB RAM
Software on SSDs (Win/Software)

Start Faction - 185-190fps
Anaconda arrive - 85-90 fps
Same fps over a long distance
at a short distance to the fight - 60-70 fps

GPU-utilization: 67-82%
CPU-utilization: of the 12 cores use 6 75%, 4 50%, 2 5%

I hope it helps

I guess that first 6 cores with 75% utilization are physical cores, the others are logical. It seems that there is no noticeable difference between i7 4930k and i7 2600k, which probably means that the game is not optimized in terms of performance.

Have you checked your GPU utilization? My guess would be that it drops to about 70% when you get the lowest frame rate.

Thanks for your post. This means that there is no special need in CPU/MB/RAM upgrade yet from Sandy Bridge.

Would be wonderful if someone could capture some stats with different resolutions and different graphics options (shadow quality, AA settings etc).

It looks GPU memory could be the bottleneck (perhaps confirmable by underclocking GPU mem?)

I'm sure there are many performance gains to come though :)

I would agree with that but I have some doubts due to this post:
http://forums.frontier.co.uk/showpost.php?p=370952&postcount=7

In most of the reviews that I have seen GTX Titan is about 20% faster than GTX 770. I have minimum of 80fps in factions with a single Titan and 4-core i7 2600k@4.6GHz HT on. According to that post GTX 770 with 8-core AMD FX8350@4GHz provide a minimum of 40fps, which is 100% slower. Where does such difference come from?

Also this post:
http://forums.frontier.co.uk/showpost.php?p=371809&postcount=15

shows that GTX780 with i5 2500k provide similar results that I have with i7 2600k HT off. I have slightly better frame rate as GTX Titan is slightly more powerful than GTX 780.
That could be down to gpu memory? 256mb per core might not be enough.

gpu utilization:
60/70fps load 82% 1124mhz - short distance to the fight
85/90fps load 67% 810mhz - long distance to the fight

[e] gpu memory @ 7000mhz, use ingame max 1478mb (faction)
1920x1200 fxaa on, all high

GTX 770 has a minimum 2 GB of memory
GTX 780 has a minimum 3 GB of memory
GTX Titan has 6GB

You say that GPU memory is a bottleneck at 6000-7000MHz?
And that it is the reason for GPU usage drop?

Is it worth upgrading to 16GB ram?

Is there any noticeable benefit?

I have an i7 3770K ivy bridge OC
MSI GTX 670 OC
2x4GB Corsair DDR3 Vengeance
250GB SSD.

My graphic card is a weak, would it be better to buy a new one or get a second one and join them together?

Since ED is a 32bit game, not 64bit, I thought it would be limited to 4GB, so unless your seriously multitasking on a 64bit operating system, 8GB should be plenty of ram.

Could you give additional information about the performance of your PC in single player Factions? The problem is that CPU usage is quite high after the combat between two factions starts, however GPU usage drops to about 70% and probably these two facts lead to drop in fps.

Should I post the performance given by the task manager?

By performance I have meant, the frame rate you have during the battle between Factions, you could have just posted average CPU load without a screenshot or at least decrease screenshot size.

Is there a special option that lets you display framerate? I can't seem to find it among the configuration screen.

Ctrl-F in some builds. FRAPS can be used if the build that you have does not support framerate display.

CTRL+F does not work in Alpha 1.1 so you might try Fraps. I also use Fraps in later builds as built-in frame rate meter updates data too fast (each millisecond?) and it is difficult to distinguish exact frame rate. Fraps averages the values.

sheesh

I've got an i5 3.2GHz (overclocked to 4.3)
A GTX 460 1GB 558mhz (overclocked to 778mhz)

In factions I see 50-120FPS, gfx RAM at 98% used, GPU at 60-90%, CPU fluctuates between 3.8Ghz and 4.3Ghz, but peak utilisation is about 80%. Don't watch it much but I suspect when I breach 70% 3.8gig is when it clocks from 3.8 to 4.3 and then the 4 cores drop to 60something to 70peak

Which resolution do you set in the game? What are your graphic settings?

Default high quality, 1080 res in game, and I got 2 monitors 2nd at 2048x1024, 1 for browser windows, JS button current assignments etc.

Oh and I run "Actual Multiple Monitors" to actually give me 2 seperate desktops on the 1 card.

You have decent FPS in factions. This only supports my theory than Factions are very CPU limited.

Yeah, I remember not too long ago (about a year) having issues with FPS in Counter Strike, upgraded CPU/Mobo/Ram, kept same GFX card and FPS went from avg of 60 to avg of 180. I think even nice GFX are very dependent on CPU, possibly regardless of what the developers do.

Probably a legacy of using windows, If we were all Linux it'd probably be better LOL.

What I don't quite understand though, is that if Factions is very CPU limited, then why doesn't it max the CPU?

People are showing 65% to 75% use on the CPU, surely this should be max'd?

You are not completely right. While I agree that CPU and GPU should be balanced, e.g. if you have a dual core CPU it will limit performance of any up-to-date high-end graphics card. I think it is not the case with ED. I have performed a test in Crysis 3, CPU load is about 70% on average, however both my GPUs are loaded to about 90-95%. I have the same 70% average CPU load in ED Factions, however both GPU load drops to 45-50%. If I use single GPU it is about 70-80%, i.e. GPUs are not fully loaded and this limits the performance.
