CQC CQC Dead? 1.5 hr wait lol!

I play War Thunder for these kinds of games, CQC had no business in ED except as a 'see, we have that too' to RSI's Arena Commander. If you want good matchmaking you should choose a good matchmaking game and encourage FD to work on their core game ( which still lacks, imo) because I dont know ANYONE who backed this for a matchmaking experience, not even once.

Agreed.

I just started on Battlefront and it really shows CQC up. Flying in a TIE Interceptor, weaving around the sky avoiding X-Wings while trying to trash the enemy transport while bombastic Star Wars music screams out of the speakers with all the "pew pew pew" is considerably better than this offering. Matchmaking lasts about 20 seconds too - if there aren't enough players bots take their place. There are 20vs20 matches on some of the game modes on that game too. CQC by comparison is just drab and lifeless.

I think FDev forgot what makes Elite so beloved among its fans. It's actually the lack of compulsive combat and the ability to do anything which has always been the strength of the series. Immersion came mostly from imagination, filling in the blanks and deciding what kind of space-farer you were. CQC does nothing for any of that.

I can't think of a good argument against the F2P idea. Either it's a good idea, or something is wrong with me in my brain. They basically gave it to us for free anyway, it would just be extending the reach and it would amount to free advertising of the awesome kind.

Had some really good matches today, and a game that lasted like, four hours. A lot of seemingly experienced pilots came and went -- I hope they were experienced, because I was getting owned pretty much the whole time. Somehow four hours of getting blown up was still fun.

It's poor compared to other F2P arena games out there. If you're into Elite then you can find something good in it. If you're not then WoT or Warthunder or any one of the other F2P games out there has vastly more depth and gameplay than CQC. It may therefore give a bad first impression of what Elite is.

If peoples first exposure to Elite gameplay is not taking their sidewinders out of a station, seeing the planets and the wonderful universe before them, but rather seeing a very generic cookie-cutter style pew pew pew arena shooter it might actually turn people away from trying out the proper game.

Well, yes...on the other hand, if they hadn't been attracted to f2p CQC in the first place, they would not have had an interest in ED anyway.
You can't really "turn people away" who weren't there to begin with. ;)

My impression of CQC is 3 stretches during the public stress test. It didn't grab me, so I've not touched it at all since 1.4 came out. It doesn't go with my idea of what Elite should be.

Yet Descent: Underground is in testing and that is great fun to play. I think it is because it is designed to be an arena game from the outset, whilst CQC is tacked onto ED like an afterthought.

That's the point of an arena game. However it has a higher skill cap than open. You have to remember that the Condor is almost 1/4 the size of a Sidewinder. Throwing in have maneuverable and how much terrain there is compared to 99% of open pvp(no terrain) that actually hitting with dead on fixed weapons would be pretty rare even for very good pilots. Throw in the fact that unlike open pips to systems actually make shields come up faster and you have a recipe for soccer score matches. Having the weapons gimbal around how fixed weapons do at long range in open was vital for making the game interesting. With out pumping up the lethality of the weapons even less people would bother.

I really don't care about what arena games are supposed to be. The point of games is to be fun regardless of the label you put on it, and I think many people would agree with me when I say that giving CQC the same customization options as the core game would make it more fun.

And just like in the core game, nobody is forced to use fixed weapons. People who don't think it's interesting to be forced to aim manually would simply use gimbals. But right now, everyone is forced to use gimbals. And without the possibility a very high skill ceiling, CQC is just too damn repetitive. With a higher skill ceiling, however, people would not feel that they're doing the same thing over and over again, because improving yourself in a high skill game effectively changes your gameplay experience as you progress.

I totally disagree. I was against CQC when it was first announced, because I thought a virtual arena dog-fighting game doesn't fit into the Elite world. After playing a few matches I completely changed my mind, though. I think it's very well implemented, actually to the point that it is better in delivering what it tries to deliver than the main game is in delivering a living and breathing galaxy. Granted, CQCs ambition as a arena fighter is of much lesser scale than that of the main game, but does a lot of things right and is a joy to play.

CQC is amazing. Super-smooth on my ageing PC and it's a lot of fun. Don't know why anyone would hate it. It's good dogfighting practice and the maps are stunning.

Agree. I've only played CQC one session... I liked it but if it forces gimbal weapons then that's not a good thing.
