I read the OP, glanced through the first few replies. Was missing some details that hadn't been supplied by the time I started to reply, got a lot of smug, arrogant flak for raising questions, am not going to bother reading any more of this, beginning at post 182, and will stop caring at this point. Good day, sir, you've turned me away with your attitude.
 
It was fairly obviously a fetching / rendering bug. When working correctly, you get one of two models. When not, you only get one, the other fails to appear.

Still, could be worse, you might have gotten the wrong model entirely, like 50% "hedgehog" and 50% Thargoid Cyclops or whatever. And if that had triggered the "what does a Thargoid Cyclops do" routine, that would have been problematic.
That would have been epic. You shoot a shard and there's a Thargoid Cyclops suddenly...
