Curious about the future

So let me get this right then. So this rig is only three years old, "I built it with top of the line hardware, at the time anyway, runs Horizons and several other high end titles perfectly and now the Odyssey mix Horizons I can't play with good frames because I don't have a high end platform anymore?

Good lord I run an ASUS AMD Ryzen 7, ASUS 125w B-series gaming board, RTX 2080, with 32g DDR4 3200, w10-64pro, DX12, 1200w Power and I'm told I can't run Odyssey due to a hardware problem? This just doesn't make a bit of sense. My hardware Specs KILL the hell out of the recommended specs for Odyssey but still noticeable, not unplayable but you know what I mean.

I look to you Chris with true respect, is there anything I can do to help performance a bit or a low level format maybe?
Second is Horizons, is it truly a dead game cause Odyssey is anything but a simulator and more of an arcade space FPS. What do you think on this? Also what forum would you use to debate these issues?

8055 hours is a terrible way to go out...:(
Are there any new space sims out there?

Thank you for your input and advice guys, helps a lot to get help from veterans on these questions...o7

I don't know, i recently upgraded to a 2060 and running horizons nicely on high/ultra. Not as good as it should if we compare to other games, but extremely playable. If i can get that good performance with a 2060 you with a 2080 should be able to get the same or better.

But i don't understand the point of your rant. If FD had left Odyssey as it was on release then sure, there would be grounds for rage and maybe even a basis for a lawsuit. But FD have spent every month since releasing patches and trying to improve things. Sure, they still have a way to go, but they have improved performance, gameplay, and the UI.

If you're not satisfied with that, its quite understandable. We were sold on the idea that Odyssey would not require much more power (if any) than Horizons, and that turned out to be a load of tosh and I have no idea how FD could have been unaware of this, and maybe were aware and misrepresented it (which is a bad look either way).

But your whole post is a rant to nowhere. FD are working as best they can to improve things. Its not going to change that. People who suffer with Odyssey, well, they already feel the pain and aren't going to change their minds until it is playable for them. And people who can now enjoying Odyssey, well, we enjoy it and will continue to play.

Perhaps it was just an exercise in getting things off your chest. That i could understand, i've been there myself.

Well I qualify to post here but i’ll decline to give you “insight, advice, information“ as you’ve excluded 1000’s of cmdrs all of which have the right to comment on this forum. Your post lacks humility.

Also OD added ship flying / dogfighting / bombing above surface settlements and CZ. It does expend the ship gameplay even more.
Yes, indeed.

But you know, acknowledging this would hurt unfounded agendas.

Only 3.5k hours, but I don't follow arbitrary forum rules set by posters, so here we go.

I can't tell the difference between 60 fps and 120 fps, and have no clue what settings I've been playing on for those thousands of hours, so I guess that part isn't a big deal to me.

I have yet to see anything in Odyssey that makes me want to buy it, so I haven't. I hold nothing against Frontier for making it, don't really care about what issues it has had other than hoping it all gets sorted for those who do have it, and who knows, maybe I'll buy it on sale some day to check it out, but until then Horizons is still a great game that I really enjoy playing.

I had to chack ingame and calculate how many hours I have (Steam shows how many hours your launcher is open, so it lies, btw) and I got only 4104, so I know it's not my place to speak, but...

My only real issue with Odyssey right now (after stuttering in settlements is gone) is with how Fdev handled some gameplay aspects of Odyssey.
For example collecting biological samples is just bare-bones collector game. You go, shoot some plant and gain another sample to your collection. The end. Kind of sad. I was hoping for some more fleshed out gameplay. And I'm not talking about collecting samples minigame that was removed, because that's not fleshed out gameplay.
Settlements are just places to go and steal things or shoot people. Kind of wasted potential.
Combat Zones are... I know Elite is just a game (and not overly realistic at that) and lots of times I need to suspend disbelief to accept how things work, but on foot CZ are nothing but simplistic chaotic arena shooter with unlimited respawn. It's supposed to represent some kind of war, but it looks like idiotic paintball game. It just... doesn't fit into the game in my opinion and I just hate it.

Otherwise, I don't feel the need to go back to Horizons. Avoiding things I don't like I enjoy the rest. New planetary tech can generate some really nice, realistic looking landscapes, even if it has some problems with visibly repeating handmade patterns. Walking around is fun and immensely increases the scale of the game world.

Basically Odyssey is good DLC and step forward. But it's like a step made by someone walking in the dark - smaller that it could've been, made not really in right direction and after tripping on first obstacle.

Excellent post!
THis is exactly how i would describe it!
Odyssey is not the end of elite but its a long way to go to optimise all the new stuff.
I never saw odyssey as an fps but an addition to the ship gameplay.

I've got 5000+ hours. But a lot of that was just flying around in supercruise, spamming the jump key as I travelled to Sag A and other far-flung destinations, and the many, many times I left my ship sat in a station while I made dinner. Plus all the time I spent posting on the forums while "playing". So I'm not sure if my opinion is valid 🤣

Same as how space CZs have been for many years ...
To some extent, maybe. Space CZs are very simple, that's true, but at least there's no respawn. And although I would wish for some better mechanic, I can also sort of buy the idea of space battle in the middle of nowhere, where forces just duke it out to establish the winner - Those settlement battles make no sense at all. It's just sensless running and shooting to capture random points over and over again until one side is out of reinforcements.
