Customizing commander name

I truly hope that the PS4 version of Elite Dangerous allows players to customize their commander name and not lock your commander name to your PSN identity. Will ED PS4 allow custom commander names?

It sounds trivial, but if my commander name is automatically set to my PSN name, I will reconsider buying ED for PS4. I say this even though I'm hyped for the game on PS4! I'm excited to jump into ED as a new commander separate from desktop play.

I know there are a couple related issues, such as Sony's approval, and identity cloning ["stealing"] from the other platform variants. These are issues that can be smartly solved on the back end.

Methinks that Sony will insist your PSN ID be your CMDR name. Just the impression I get from any console network.

I do not concur.

We have various MMOs on PS4 where one creates a character or avatar. In most cases, one can choose a name for said creation.

Since our CMDR is a character, I do not see why this would be any different. The character creation process will exist on ED's servers, not Sony's. We simply use Sony's servers for the login authorisation.

Most MMO's on XboxOne lets you create you own name.

But, regarding Elite, and because how this game works, i have to follow Unicorns lead here.

A HUGE reason.. lol.

Made my first XboxLive name 15 years ago, never thought it was that important, coming form PC, i had no clue this is how i was called for the rest of my console career.. As soon as i figured that one out, I changed it. Luckily, Microsoft lets you change your name for free the first time.

It varies. We either see just their character name (FFXIV or DCUO) or perhaps you name it yet others see your PSN name (ESO and Neverwinter) or see the name of your ship and commander (STO) and other variants.

Completely possible, as shown, to display a character name, not a PSN name.

Fair enough, your network is different in that regard.

My money is still on having to use PSN ID though, for ED.
