Newcomer / Intro Cutting access panels

I know, I know, this is basic, but I have just begun trying the on-foot stuff! I have found a crashed ship on a dustball, and I am trying to cut a red access panel to get in to stuff inside.

The panel is sitting on the aperture at a cockeyed angle, and what happens is that as I activate the laser cutter with a green 'sight' dot, it fires up ok, but as I traverse the beam over the target panel edges, the sight suddenly goes red and the beam shuts off. I relocate the sight slightly until it goes green again, but the same happens again. I can't get the panel off; I haven't a clue where the beam has to go, nor whether I have to make the entire thing with a single 'cut' or whether I can do it in stages, one section at a time.

It's bloody infuriating, to be honest!

Please can someone give me some tips on how to perform this most basic of on-foot tasks, second only to walking? At least I can do that!

[Edit]: Would you believe it needed a restart so that the panel worked properly.....

In fact it's worse than that. My Joy3 button suddenly keeps failing to allow me to board the SRV and even the ship. Is this a known bug?

It helps to be as square on to the panel as possible. You can use multiple cuts but you must make sure not to leave any tiny bridges of uncut material. Keep an eye on your power levels. Try to set up the cuts so the panel falls outwards as it can get stuck if it goes the other way.

Not a bug I have heard of, but positioning by the SRV can be fiddler at times.
