CV1 on its way... essential software?

Hi folks,

So i've just pulled the trigger on a CV1 purchase, expecting it around Wednesday/Thursday.... super excited but my bank balance wasn't!

Other than of course Horizons (which I have just added to my account) are there any other essential software/games/apps I should consider getting?

Nice one and congratulations.

My go-to game is of course Elite Dangerous but I also have the following: -

Adr1ft - I've not played it much as it gives me major VR sickness (which is odd as no other games do)

Lucky's Tale (free) - a fun and quite impressive platformer

Project Cars - pretty good if you have the horsepower to crank up the visuals. I don't play it much cos I'm crap at driving games (maybe cos I don't have a wheel)

Kronos - a RPF light type medieval game. It's OK but I'm not too keen on the fixed camera views

Dreamdeck (free? VR demo) - good for the initial wow factor and to demo to others but you'll likely not bother with it after the initial viewing

Alien Isolation (via Vorpx) - take a little time to set up and tweak but I've got it working very well (and is      scary!), although a few issues with the HUD

Others will likely vouch for DCS, Warthunder, Asseto Corsa, Dirt Rally which are all meant to be very good on CV1

Let us know what you think once you've had some time in it!

Congrats on getting an HMD. :)
For Elite I would recommend getting Voice attack if you don't have it already. It's around 10$ but it makes your life so much easier and more immersive.
Be sure to try out BigScreen or Virtual Desktop to get yourself a virtual monitor so you can play normal games in VR on a 21-100 inch monitor and watch/play 3D movies or games.

Oh yes forgot about Voice Attack (VERY useful) and Virtual Desktop is awesome - especially for watching movies like you're there in the cinema. Not very sociable though!

LOL - in exactly the same situation as the OP. Have spent most of my day at work today alternating between refreshing my Amazon Orders page while shouting "dispatch damn you DISPATCH" and googling for "best Oculus experiences".

Here's the list that I've come up with (mostly as things to impress others with because I'll be playing Elite) ..

- Showdown
- Dreamdeck
- Introduction to Virtual Reality
- Bigscreen
- Henry
- Adr1ft (maybe)

In fact I've already created my Oculus account, downloaded and installed the Oculus software ..

https://www3.oculus.com/en-us/setup/

.. and added all the above to my library in order to save a bit of time when the beast finally arrives ('cos let's face it, when you finally get to unbox your Oculus that last thing you want to do is spend the next hour or so watching a download progress bar).

As others have mentioned dreamdeck is a must. You will go through some of it as soon as you finish set-up but it vanishes and you have to download it to see it again.

If you are in to space stuff (and I'm guessing you must be) I recommend Apollo 11 VR. I did it in sit back and watch mode to take it all in and loved it. Think of it as a first person documentary using computer graphics instead of actual footage.

Get some jumbo sized nappies so you don't have to break immersion on those long haul trading runs!! :D

Haha. I actually bought some straws the other day so I could enjoy a few drinks while playing over the weekend, without having to look up and almost backwards through the conopy every time I wanted a swig.

Top recommendation is "straws" or beer in bottles only - you'll soon understand why lol

Games wise, I play every sitting down game with the CV1, everything room scale on the Vive. CV1 is superior in performance with all converted AAA style games out there.

Elite - obviously, and with voice attack....even if to only to make docking requests easier while racing in with slaves!
Project Cars - with a G29 or similar and you'll never play a racing game ever again in 2D
Assetto Corsa - if you really need even more cars. Slightly better in some ways, but not as impressive as P Cars at night in a thunderstorm lol!
Aerofly FS2 - with an X56 or similar it feels really good. It's still only early access but the scenery in Switzerland is very good. I'm loving just flying a Cessna around and not enjoyed virtual flying so much since the original FSX launch.
DCS World - basic version is free but not played it since getting FS2
Dirt Rally - I've heard this is good but I can only play so many car games at once!

Everything else is Vive only really, until the touch controllers come out. Lucky's Tale is ok on the game pad (I got it free), but I wouldn't waste your time with anything else. The experience is just a bit lacking.

I'm surprised nobody mentioned the Oculus SDK, which I'd recommend to make everything look better.

Read more about it here:

Man, ninja'd by minutes :p

Second this - the Oculus Debug Tool and its invaluable Pixel Density setting are a definite must-have. The Pixel density improves the quality of the image, and is significantly faster than the Super-sampling options in ED).

The HUDs you can overlay in your game to trouble-shoot any performance issues and monitor how hard everything is being pushed is very useful.

Thanks very much for all the recommendations folks. It's looking like Thursday is the big day that i take delivery of my rift. Has anyone bought or played Eve Valkyrie? Obviously Elite D will be my primary spacers fix but Eve looks like a lot of fun for a quick arcadey type shooter. It's damned expensive though so i'm on the fence about it.

I've updated my Elite to Horizons now in readiness for VR. Just had a very brief look at it, i kind of want to save all this extra content for VR. Even thought about clearing my save and starting over in VR, that thought quickly passed though as i don't fancy the grind up again. not that i have loads, just an ASP explorer at the moment but have around 300 mil credits, that'd take forever to get again.

Like Alec Turner, i've set up my oculus account and have a lot of the recommendations sitting in my library, ready to go. Longest week EVER waiting for my unit to arrive!

Fortunately, my better half is probably one of the most understanding women in the whole world, never gives me grief when i'm gaming, in fact she loves that she can just watch whatever she wants on the TV.

45 year old man feeling like a 10 year old boy waiting for Thursday like its Christmas day.

I played a very early version on a DK2 at a CCP Eve meet-up event in London.

It was pretty "intense" (to use the Oculus comfort rating) even then. You're right tho', it's a lot of money for what's essentially a glorified CQC.

My delivery currently says "Dispatching soon(tm)". This is going to be a LONG week!

I got it free with the Rift and I wasn't impressed. Currently 44.99GBP so way overpriced IMO. Unless you have money to burn I'd stick with ED/Arena if I were you.

Yep, that £45.00 price point put me off of it, visually looks ok but reviews say it gets pretty repetitive fast. I think i'll be getting my spacers fix from Elite.

Well, the Oculus has been an absolute mind blower so far!

Anyway, I just wanted to chip in re: Apollo 11 VR ..

https://www.oculus.com/experiences/rift/937027946381272/

.. I recently showed a friend of mine the first earth orbit sequence (I'll spare their embarrassment by saying who) and after a few minutes I realised they were sobbing uncontrollably, so moving had they found the experience!

Edit: while googling to try and find the name of that sequence I found the following video ... seems my "friend" wasn't alone!

Skip forward to around the 13 minute mark (and fair play to the guy for posting this on the internet).
