Newcomer / Intro Data Link Scanner INOP

Greetings Commanders. Getting exploring again after almost a year break. Have most everything up and running and getting aquainted with Odyssey. Have gone through all my keybinds on my TM WH HOTAS and THQ and, for the most part, have about 95 percent of it operational. Other 5% is the SRV. I'm having an issue with the data scanner. Probably operator error, but I cannot get it to fire. I'm sitting 150m from a NAV Beacon, hardpoints out. No Weapons on board. Only one fire group. Data scanner is Primary fire, for the Hotas trigger. I deploy hardpoints, I get a nice blue arc under the Beacon. I get a verticle blue line down the right side of the hud with Primary at top and Data Link Scaner at the bottom. Press the trigger, nothing. I cannot get the datalinkl scanner to function. I'm sure I am doing something wrong, but hours later I cannot figure out what, so I'm here holding a bag full of humility. It's in my modules. I believe it comes with the ship. I had this happen a few years ago and I cannot remember what the issue was. Any suggested would be most welcomed. Thanks! Makes it difficult to run black box missions and get my space legs back under me. I have tried no less than 4 beacons.

You don't use the DataLinkScanner on the NAV beacon. You just target it (target ahead or select it in the the left-hand panel) the ship's inbuilt scanner does the interrogation.

As usual, a screenshot might have helped - but in general, a Nav beacon is not scannable with a datalink scanner. It's getting scanned automagically once you target it, have it somewhat in front and are close enough.
The datalink scanner is needed for data points (on ships and on the ground) - and yes, there the usual problem is that you need to deploy hardpoints.

Thanks! So If I'm on a data salvage mission and my nav panel doesn't show the destination, I'm under the belief I should scan the nav beacon and the mission info will show up after teh beacon is scanned. I should see a mission icon next to the location on the nav panel, fly there and begin targeting space junk until I find the mission data??? Not happening. Should I get a comms readout that the beacon, or mission critical data has been received. Again, not happening. Is there any animation or hud message to let me know the beacon has been scanned. Again, not happening. Over and over.

a data salvage mission
Could you post a screenshot of that mission from your left HUD panel? I'm currently at a loss regarding what a "data salvage" mission would be (possibly a translation issue?).

If you're talking about what is called in the English version a "black box recovery" mission (the only space based mission I can associate with "data" right now - but I haven't done that many missins since Ody came along), then the procedure is:
  • jump into target system
  • either
    • check if your nav tab (left HUD) already has the mission target SS
    • honk the system, then look for the mission target SS in the FSS
    • scan the nav beacon (target it, point at it, wait a few seconds) to reveal all the active SS in the system, including your mission SS
  • then fly out to your mission SS, drop in and pick up the black box(es). Either try to make it out before the pirates arrive or bring a ship with good shields. You can get another mission SS until you have scooped the required number of black boxes.

Edit: once you're in the mission SS, you need to physically pick up the black box - a collector limpet controller helps. Use it in targeted mode to speed things up, you got company coming. And of course you need the cargo space to store it.

.... Should I get a comms readout that the beacon, or mission critical data has been received. ...

You get a message in blue writing in the upper right corner of the HUD saying "system data received" (or words to that effect).

When you have targetted the nav beacon (N.B. the actual beacon, not its navigation marker) IIRC you should see an animation in your target window (that box in the lower left) that completes when the scan finishes.

I seem to remember also getting a "Target data received" message (or something like that) - but it is so long since I did a mission that I could be mistaken.

To be honest I've never really understood why you need to deploy hardpoints for the build-in scanner nor for the various other scanner that are placed in utility mounts. Aren't they permanently deployed? Can you actually see say the data link scanner deploy if you watch the ship from the outside?

IIRC, after scanning the navbeacon you won't see the POI until you have entered supercruise.

Because by design, they're all hardpoints - large hardpoints for weapons, small hardpoints (for utilities and onboard sensors assimilated as utilities)

The DataLink Scanner is an in-built internal scanner, like your targetting scanner and nav scanner, nothing to deploy.

But you can use heatsinks and point defences without deploying them?

I seem to remember seeing the wording on the HUD saying "heatsinks deploying" (or deployed).

BTW - Chaff dispenser is permanently deployed - similarly the wake scanner never retracts and yet you need to "deploy hardpoints" to use it.

And yet you have to deploy hardpoints to use it?

I'm gonna try to observe the ship from outside some day while using/deploying the different scanners. Not that it's very important in the wider scheme of things. :)

BTW - regarding heatsinks and point defence:

Here you can see the messages on exiting supercruise informing that they are deploying :

Fnord and fellow Commaders. Thanks for the video and the help! I have tried following your example twice, once just a nav beacon and once with a bloack box recovery mission out of Jacque's station. Both times I do not get a blue text box telling me the signal source has been read when I'm sitting on top of it as per your video, hardpoints out, targeted with the beacon on my radar. I will give it another go or two. Please be patient. I REALLY need to get this resolved as I wish to obtain 25 Occupied Escape Pods from the Luchtaine System to unlock Dorn to get my DSS to 5, first order of business is scanning the nav beacon to find the pods. I'll keep at it.

For one thing, you don't need to get the escape pods from Luchtaine - you can pick them up everywhere. Even in the bubble. Not sure just which (if any) type of SS will have them in Odyssey - but Pirates drop them when killed.

Fired up the ship which was sitting near the beacon just now. Black box mission still active. Upon entering Supercruise received blue text top right mission critical signal sources id'd or something along those lines. Yet... Nothing in my nav panel is hightlighted blue, there are NO signal sources other than the nav beacon and no POI's listed.

Oh don't do that - go to Luchtaine planet A1 - target the distress call - drop in to the megaship - target megaship - deploy hardpoints and use DataLink scanner - go to the contacts panel - select escape hatch 3 - go there and scan that - you find a hartchbreaker limpet attachment point - deploy hatchbreaker - deploy collector limpets - repeat hatchbreaker (I think it can do 3 repeats) - relog as often as you need to get 25 occupied escape pods.

That's the plan. You're sayng don't go to the nav beacon, just go straight to Luchtaine A1 and find the wrecked ships. OK,,, I have all the mats I need to roll my DSS to 5 with Dorn. My understanding is I can go out in my Python that has hatch breaker and collector limpets and controller, repeat the hatchbreaking process to get the 25 pods. I can then come back to Jacques Station, switch to my Krait Phantom that I just stored the field maint and put in a 32 cargo rack. Once I switch ships from the Python to the Krait I can head for Dorn's house; the cargo should be with me???? If I get out to these wrecks and find my datalink scanner is INOP I'm going to be banging my head on the table. Thanks again for the assistance!

That's a plan - no worries about the cargo being in your new ship, as long as it has space there will be no issue. You might want to offload (sell) any limpets you have left before switching. Bear in mind that your collector limpets will annoy you - going after other stuff and getting stuck trying to get to pods caught inside the ship so take plenty.

Good luck and a Happy New Year
