Hi everyone,

David's going to be setting aside some time to do another Powerplay AMA, from 4PM BST tomorrow (03/06/2015).

We'll be answering your questions on the day but also picking some from the thread below, so please feel free to ask away!

The AMA will happen on these forums, so look out for a link beforehand tomorrow.

Thanks for hosting another AMA. I have one question and it's about reputation decay. I am slightly concerned that reputation decay will put off people from interacting with the various powers. As a casual gamer who fits in ED around family life what would drive me to help a power if all that is going to happen is my reputation decays? Basically am I going to feel like a hamster on a wheel going nowhere fast as my reputation degrades faster than I can make it!?

Also could that wheel and hamster be connected to a loom to knit you some more quality jumpers?

Two easy questions from me.
Will Frontier be making official videos covering the ins and outs of Powerplay? Will you be backing The Bard's Tale IV on Kickstarter?

My question:

I'm really looking forward to PowerPlay to enhance my in-human space experience, but as you know a lot of us love this game for exploration as well. What kind of mission-love will explorers be getting? So far I've only heard of local things like black-box retrieval, but nothing about going long distances, scanning for certain planet types that are in demand, being assigned a specific system to check out and report back on, or search and rescue for other explorers (could have it so you need to carry fuel drones to an NPC out in a specific location). Any plans in these regards?

Follow up: are there plans for more exploration related content in 1.4? Not in terms of missions, but visuals. Things you might see or find, ways to add a bit more spice to the current variation of planets and stars (accretion discs, for example, or contact binaries that are sharing their gaseous envelopes, or ice geysers jetting out from icy worlds, etc...)

Offline Rep-Decay, 10% module buy-back cost (without storage or offset by rep/pilot federation rank/major power rank) and the pure competition within PP, are perceived as having a negative impact upon the more casual players of Elite. Is there a discussion about this at FD; is it still being looked at or is it fixed?

Our concerns are this is a direction, that a large amount of mature casual players (myself included), that it will adversely affect that portion of the community who see themselves as long term casual players and supporters and want to be apart of elite for a long time to come.

I would also like to say that the vast majority of 1.3 is great work and although there has been criticism of some of these"minor" issues we love the game your have produced. Thank you so very much for all your effort.

With the differences now in gameplay between participating in powerplay or not participating, would it be possible to allow at least a 2nd CMDR save slot so we can experience the best of both worlds?

I'd like to keep my CMDR they way he is, but there is a certain appeal to doing a clean start with the powerplay release.

Thanks.

The PowerPlay update might look as a surprising move, as it seems to bring ED in a different direction than what was envisioned in both KS and DDF guidelines. There are a lot of questions these days in the forums about the global heading of ED as a whole. Could you share with us what the future of the game will be ?

The mechanics of powerplay, particularly the interface between player and power being an almost direct copy of the community goal model, gives the entire experience an MMO-guild type feel to the gameplay.

Is this MMO-style a new direction for Elite: Dangerous? Or will you be still focussing on the single player immersive experience, even if that single player is playing in a universe filled with other players?

Thank's very much to you and the FDev team for all of your efforts. One or two subjective niggles of mine aside the game is the one I've been waiting for for years and I'm totally enamoured with it.

  • Will there be more free updates after 1.3 (e.g. 1.4, 1.5 etc.) or was Powerplay the last free major update before DLC and expansion are to be released?
  • Are persistent NPCs and NPC contacts still "on the list"?

My Q:

Hi David, thanks (to you & team) so much for the game so far - loving it.

Are there plans in PP / 1.4 or future expansions to add more solo gamer content - particularly personality & variety to the galaxy & it's human inhabitants.

thanks!

Powerplay is currently turn based. While this fits with well with elements such as allocation of rewards, it doesn't fit as well with things like regime change. Are there any plans to make the regime change happen at the point the set criteria are met, rather than at the end of the power player period which could be days, maybe weeks later?

In a similar vein, we have seen the concepts of the "moving" space station where it was necessary to drop the server to effect the change of system. Are there any plans to automate it so it appears and disappears like a capital ship?

Awesome! After playing the Beta the past week I am very much looking forward to 1.3.

My question: Which Power is David Braben backing?

Question:

Hi David,

Can you shed some light on the justification for the new PowerPlay mechanic that sees "pledged" pilots who are legally CLEAN being attacked by System Authority Ships when in "unfriendly" Power airspace?

The Powers are spheres of influence within Major Factions, so how can they just override fundamental judicial laws in every jurisdiction under their influence? If a System Authority Ship in a region controlled by a Federation Power attacked and destroyed a CLEAN ship purely because of its declared allegiance to an Imperial Power, how could that not violate the fundamental laws of the system in which the attack occurred?

In Elite v1.3, there hasn't been a three-way Declaration of War between each of the Major Factions, has there? So how can apparent military-style attacks be perpetrated by Minor Faction controlled police/authority ships, without falling foul of the basic laws governing galactic travel?

And if agents of a Power decided to attack CLEAN agents of an opposing Power, surely they would have to do so at risk of breaking local in-system laws?

I guess my underlying question is, doesn't the PP "HOSTILE" mechanic fly in the face of thirty years of the unique and well-established legal system we have in Elite?

Hi David,

according to the lore of Elite, would you say pledging yourself to a power is supposed to be an overt or a covert action? Is it public or secret? This is the fundamental design choice that Power Play is resting on. And currently Im not convinced that FD has thought it through - at least lore wise. (More details here).

Cheers :)
