Hi David. Just wondering if you've had any thoughts to low tech kit to aid smaller ships with mining. Like a simple grapple hook system to stop the ore from floating away, not to actualy bring it in to the cargo. Just to arrest its speed
I'm guessing only larger ships would be able to carry mining drones if they got implemented

Back during the Kickstarter, we were clear about the vision, to make a phenomenal new sequel to Elite in an online world, which we believe we are about to deliver. At the time we believed we could also offer a good single player experience, and base an acceptable offline-only experience off that. As development has progressed, it has become clear that this last assumption is not the case. That experience would be empty at best, and even that would take a lot of extra work.

It is not to enforce DRM or advertising as you suggest. We will be judged on quality, and the quality of that game experience would be poor, and we don't want to deliver a poor game. To make a richer offline single player experience has always been possible (and still is) but would be a separate game with its own story content. A huge slice of separate work. We have developed a multi-player game with an unfolding story involving the players, and groups collaborating with specific objectives and taking account of all players behaviour. This is what the game is about. Without this it would not be the rich gaming experience that we will deliver, and would be a great disappointment to all players.

I don't pretend it was an easy decision, but it was done to benefit the game as a whole. One thing we have looked at carefully is our requirements of the network connection. For the single player game they are pretty light. I myself have played the game fine on the train using a laptop on a tethered connection over my phone. Given that this is a game which is only available online, this was the decision we took. I am sorry that people are so upset about it, but it was the right decision.

Thank you for the answer.

Hi David,

Saw you at EGX this year for your presentation. Must have queued up a number of times to play elite at the stand and i bought the BETA soon after. Keep up the good work and looking forward to exploring the milky way as far as i can go

Did the ED team uncover any amusing or amazing 'bugs' or outcomes in the creation and processing of Stellar Forge? Any examples?

Do the team try and keep the output of Stellar Forge as close to known reality as possible, or do the team stretch the parameters/bounderies somewhat to generate greater ranges of interesting environments etc?

Hi David,

Thanks for taking time out from what can only be an extremely busy schedule. Cannot wait for release!

What can we expect in terms of alien life? Will there be giant blob monsters or crab/serpent/feline civilizations? Will there be planets with intelligent (but no space-competent) life forms?

Thanks

Hi David,

My question is what's status of Wings/Alliances for gamma? I know it might get added later, but for reviews and overall satisfaction it would be essential to have that in game. And I mean quite basic support :)

Hello David,

I appear to have been sold a game you now can't deliver - can you please confirm an unequivocal full refund will be forthcoming due to the lack of offline mode?

Thanks (was a huge fan btw)

I'm sorry you're upset. We do have a refunds policy, so you should get in touch. Please consider that we have been backed to make the game we were backed to make as best we could. This includes hard decisions (and many easy ones too), but those hard ones are inevitably balancing one thing with another. For me, quality wins, and that is what happened with this decision. Not everyone may agree with every decision.

Have you played the game? Why is the offline (as opposed to single player, which I understand) mode so important to you?

That's an excellent reply David, and something I've been waiting to read for 4 days since Black Friday.

Given that you say a rich offline single player experience is still possible, do you think the demand is there for that, and if so, would you consider it as a (separate) project for FD in the future? Parts of it must surely already be written - just residing in a different place.

That must not have been easy surely some degree of backlash was to be anticipated. It's unfortunate how it unfolded but I appreciate the answer in the matter hopefully this will help some.

Hi David,

Why is it that in a future that involves space travel, no station builder has managed to clearly indicate where the entrance to the station is upon approach from space unless you are facing it directly?

Can we have a flow of lights, or arrows on the small target model pointing to the entrance for stations like the Coriolis starports?

Thanks ;-)

Hi David, I have a question regarding game mechanics, I'm seeing that the federal distress beacon and other conflicts are being moved around, but there doesn't seem to be an end to these scenarios, capital ship doesn't jump out if it's rescued, the war doesn't show a clear winner, at least within that particular zone.

I am wondering if the team plans on making these more dynamic, fully randomized events, where there is actually a clear winner and loser in these warzones. Or the capital does get destroyed/saved etc, and that perhaps the winners will get paid a significant amount for aiding in these places? Because right now it feels static, will we see changes to this anytime soon? Thank you.

Hi David, thanks for dropping by. I would like to ask is there any chance of giving the current mod team a well kitted out ship (eg Anaconda or something of that ilk) as one of their starter ships a thank you for all their hard work in the forum?

They are the absolute best - things would literally fall apart without them.

We will find a way of saying thanks, don't you worry!

Thanks for everyone's questions so far.

When developing a game there are endless decisions to be made. The current "Offline" issues are a case in point. We make these decisions to get the best end result - frequently leaving ideas on the proverbial cutting room floor. Sometimes these decisions are hard ones.

Appreciate the answer, it would have been easy to miss the question and I respect that. :)

Hi!
I'm very looking forward to the moment when the "wipe-reins" are being released and the game finally starts.
Best wishes for release and that everything works!

We stuck with reality, but the reality is pretty amazing. The frequency of binary planets was one thing that surprised me.

So the 22nd we can play for real,so there will be no more wipes?
Also what time is the final wipe on the 22nd?

As David has answered the questions re refunds, can we have no more questions on that subject.

Thanks everyone. :)

Hi David,

No offline mode is bad news!

Why not release a scaled down version of your server software for people to run on their own computers locally? with perhaps a passive internet connection when available to download updates? or something?

Maybe even let the ED userbase create their own single player experience if you don't have the resources?

Seconded.
I like to play the old Elite games from time to time, and I was hoping I could do the same with E:D for years to come even after eventually the servers go down by whatever reason.
Even if FD could make a statement promising to release the server code (or even a binary) to the public in the event of the servers going down indefinitely for any reason, that would be good enough for many of us! Is that even worth hoping for?

Having said all this, thanks for taking the time to talk to us and thanks for making the game possible at all!

Cheers!

Chalito
