Ships DBX build for long trips.

Hi all,

I'm looking to build a long-distance 'sightseeing' ship. Nebulae etc etc.
I currently use an ASPX for my exploration but fancied something cheap, built just for system hopping. I'm currently thinking about buying a DBX and kitting it out accordingly. To break up the longer trips now and again, I quite enjoy exploring the planetary surfaces with the SRV and so have included the hangar and then chucked in a cargo rack just in case I find anything worth selling on. I've just used the Engineers who I currently have at my disposal now to improve where I can.

Does this look like I'm on the right track please?

Thanks very much.

D grade (and low weight engineer) the shield

If you really want to take cargo racks (you don't need to) then add Repair Limpets so you might get some use out of the space, but I'd put in a size 3 FSD Booster. Ditch the Shield Boosters (weight). Id take SC-Assist instead of HRP, but that's up to you - again HRP is extra weight, so less jump.

Edit: And you missed a DSS :)

Something like: https://s.orbis.zone/9ypZ (sneakily edited when Speedcuff's build reminded me the shield could be smaller :) )

The Dolphin is better IMO. I've used both for long distance trips, and I much prefer the Dolphin with its size 5 fuel scoop, super cool thermal profile, very zippy supercruise maneuverability, and general appearance. I'm pretty sure the price is of a fully-kitted explorer Dolphin is comparable to the DBX.

Hm. I don't know exactly what you're using it for, or your flying style.
This is my odd job DBX. Travel, scouting, bashing Goid Scouts, mat gathering, and so on. Smaller fuel tank.

Just looking to fly it out for sightseeing sort of stuff. Maybe Beagle Point at some time or somewhere similar. Planetary exploration now and again to break up the monotony. 👍🏼

I'll post a build of my dbx when im back on my ps4, but you need a dss, go D rate your shields and enhance low power with high cap. Get rid of the HRP and shield boosters.

My opinion, i've never needed a AMFU, so i got rid of that and instead carry a repair limpet controller with a 2e cargo rack. Carrying a mining laser has saved my ass twice, so i recommend carrying one. I also carry 2 SRV hangers, because i lost one once doing something stupid (again Mining laser helped here to collect materials)! . PDT's also help out shoot out skimmer missiles.

I took a DBX to Beagle. The small scoop is a pain. Flying a Phantom is much more comfortable. I wouldn't recommend the DBX for longhaul unless you're just a jump range junkie.

If you're determined, I'd go for this:

Not a jump range junkie no. Am certainly open to suggestions regarding the best way to travel long distances. I can see that the DBX fuel scoop will make life interesting after being used to the 6A in my ASPX. Having just checked the distance/number of jumps to reach BP I might do somewhere closer to begin with. It looks like the BP trip is a trifle extreme! No Guardian stuff unlocked at my end so I can't use any of that particular enhancement. The more I look at the logic of having a separate ship, the more it looks like the best way to approach it is to just go in my ASPX. 😁

The scoop thing is overblown on this board I think. The DBX runs cool, especially if you engineer it with this as a priority. That lets you scoop at or close to max rate. And unless you are just dropping and waking (and not exploring), you're going to spend a few minutes at least scanning the system. The DBX is great to scan while scooping with no worries and at a good rate due to how tightly you can tuck it in to the star.

The exception is if you are not scanning, in which case you'll go a little faster with other ships perhaps. But the difference is small.

You can make the scooping much faster by downsizing your fuel tank :D

For me the class 4 scoop on a DBX is a non-issue. This is my DBX

Mad Hops Diamondback Explorer -- Deep Diver / Bubble Runner

Great ship, but for sightseeing I prefer the Orca, which I also have engineered to run very cool. Both my Orca and DBX idle around 14-16% heat

Agree, I don't find a class 4a fuel scoop slow at all. When I am out exploring, I always fuel scoop after each jump, in most new systems that I arrive, I also try to scan every planetary body in each system. Often my DBX would finish fuel scooping way before I have finished scanning the system.

Then my vote goes to the Dolphin...

It doesn’t jump quite as far as the DBX but its ability to fit the bigger scoop means it’s better in a marathon.

DBX 4A = 1:30 to fill tank.
Dolphin 5A = 30s to fill tank.
Basically 3x more efficient...

When traveling a few thousand LY the Dolphin will very comfortably overtake the DBX.

Space is simply huge, it’s pretty humbling when you’ve been jumping for an hour and take a look at the galaxy map and realise you’ve barely moved. I find under these conditions the DBX just starts to feel winded/bloated...

...exploration isn’t always about speed, but sometimes you just want/need to MOVE!

Then there’s the cockpits.

The DBX looks like something you spend an 8 hour shift in on a construction site. Primitive instruments, no heater, old crisp packets down the side of the seat....

The Dolphin is pretty much Star Trek in comparison. Roomy, modern, easy to clean, no wires dangling down......it looks like somewhere you could be comfortable for months if necessary.

For planetary work the Dolphin again shines, fast and agile with a good 20-30% more shielding for landing mishaps than a DBX with comparable exploration load outs.

The DBX is very good at its designated role as combat/explorer. It can travel far, hand out and take a beating (its got pretty much Vulture fire power) and excellent at salvage/engineer work. But if you’re heading out deep into space the Dolphin is the better option I feel.

Thanks for that Maymo,

Would you/anyone by any chance have a suggested build for a Dolphin please? Remembering that I have no access at this point to the Guardian upgrades. I have access to Farseer (level 5), Martuuk (level 4), Tod (level 3) and Ryder (level 3). Got over 415 million in credits so budget isn't a problem.

I see what you mean about the vastness of the void. I'm in my ASPX about 4000ly out from my normal haunt at Ray Gateway and still have just over 100 jumps to get out to my next bookmarked system as I head further outwards. When I zoom out it looks as though I've only just set off! Finding loads of undiscovered systems now though so am keeping busy on my travels.

Thanks for the help everyone. 👍🏼
