Deadzone and hardpoints

just testing single player beta before my standard beta starts

a couple of things id like to clear up

hardpoints: what are they and how do they work etc?

deadzone options for joystick?

ive also noticed the thrust on my joystick is either full thrust or full reverse i cannot move rudder to midlle well and just stop etc

looks like i have afew things to learn and need to put notes on the keyboard etc lol
time is not of the essence as i dont get often to play

thanks all

Hi Fx2050.

Hardpoints: they are the locations on your ship where you attach guns, lasers, missiles, etc. Deployed means you've opened the hatches and got the guns out ready for action! Contacts on your scanner appear as triangles if their hardpoints are deployed.

Deadzone: basically how far you have to move a joystick (or throttle, rudder, etc) before the game takes any notice of it. A small deadzone means your ship will respond almost as soon as you move the stick away from the central point, a large deadzone requires a larger input before the game responds. The reason for having them is that not all joysticks return exactly to zero every time, and to let you customise the response you want.

Throttle: You can set your throttle to be 'full range' or 'forward only'. You can select a variable deadzone for throttle too.

'Full range' means you have to be able to find the middle position accurately if you want to come to a complete stop. Tricky on many joysticks.

'Forward only' does exactly that. Pull the throttle all the way back to stop. You will have to select a button to put your ship into reverse if you do this. With reverse selected by tapping whatever button or key you selected, pushing forward increases your reverse speed, pulling back brings you to a halt again.

Don't worry though, stick with it, the penny will drop and it'll all seem like second nature in no time. :)

Have a look at the weapons and hardpoints guide in my sig links below.. keep asking questions if still needed.

Deadzones work like this.. the center of your joystick (supposedly when perfectly upright and no pressure on any directional axis) may be different from older worn out joysticks where the springs may be weaker which causes your joystick to tilt to the side just a little bit.. which then causes a signal to be sent making your ship rotate non-stop..

You can "fix" your joystick by increasing the non-signal diameter of the center of your joystick by using the deadzone slider.. the more you push the slider one way, the larger diameter your joystick will have to move before it "picks up" the area where it is needed to begin sending a signal again..

This has been useful in the past when I am in driving simulations.. having a larger deadzone on a stick that would be normally too sensitive in the upright centered position gives me the ability to "take my hands off the wheel" and the vehicle would keep driving a straight line.. functionally speaking - this was a "front end wheel alignment".. for a droopy joystick.

Thanks guys

Some good info to consider

Need to get some time for few hours practice not just 30mins
Considering get a little usb foot pedal also for taking flight assist off. Think it could work quite well

Remembering my keys is the thing

And make sure your throttle axis is bound to "Throttle Axis" in the control options, not any of the digital button options, like "Increase Throttle" or "Reverse Throttle".

whatever deadzone i try i go from 0 to max on one tiny increment on my throttle

i cant seem to easily raise by small increments

does your configuration look like this?

similar but im not using forward only, i want to use the full throttle, not switch

im at max speed and slight decrease and im back to 0

i should be able to lower throttle to the middle slowing down to 0 as i go then keep going with throttle down to put into reverse

it does this but its very fast from 100 to 0 and -100

any further help? this weekend will be my main test of this game and the only time i really will

i still cannot go slowly through throttle, its either zero or max, no middle ground

?

Something is definitely wrong, if you're certain you're binding it to the analogue Thruster axis in-game, and not to the binary Increase and Decrease Throttle controls.

Does the throttle register as expected when you try and calibrate it in Windows control panel?

If so, and if no one else comes up with any suggestions, could be time to raise a ticket.

thanks

i dont appear to have any calibrate in control panel, just the sidewinder listed. seems no drivers to download anymore, it just auto detects

it was never an issue with BF4, i could easily use to pump the throttle and float and land a chopper

ill have another check at weekend and see if changes with beta next week also

All my joystick devices show up under "Set Up USB Game Controllers" in control panel, so have a look there if you haven't already done so (I hope I'm not conducting a "grandmother egg-sucking course" here ;))

I'm a desktop engineer so know my way around

The joystick is listed in devices but no calibration options within properties and seems no drivers exist

I did not understand whether you have checked that you have assigned throttle the right way, i.e. throttle axis.

If you have increase/decrease throttle assigned - this is the wrong way. You will have digital control, which works exactly as you have described with full range mode, i.e. either full reverse or full forward or either 0 or max in full forward mode.

sorted it thnanks

now setting up a usb keypad to sit next to my joystick so everything is nice close

evening of setting my controls ready for beta

cheers peeps
