Horizons Dealing with a Goliath

I'm going to share with you all how I deal with Goliaths in my SRV without losing my shields.

Raiding bases is pretty much the only thing fun to do in Horizons right now, so I do it often. Medium bases have the Goliath there which is basically an extremely beefy Sentry that is hard to kill from the ground and the air.

I first enter a base and find the goliath before doing anything else. Once I find him I take a cheap shot usually from about 600 meters away. This will aggro him. Then I run like hell behind a turret. You know, one of those big turrets that can take out a Corvette relatively easily. The Goliath is stupid and will shoot at me accidentally hitting and causing aggro on the turret which will actually aggro the entire base defenses.

Then just sit back and watch him be ripped apart by his own base.

I'm not sure if this is a bug or not, but it's certainly funny and a great way to deal with them.

Sounds great. Reminds of the old (I mean really old) Doom trick: run through a room of monsters so they hit each other with the crossfire. Then hide while they tear each other to pieces.

PRETTY SAD THAT THE ONLY FUN THING HAS A FUNNY BUG IN IT.

I hope the devs implement some full price fixes on Monday and Frontier?
Please fire the BETA testers because they did a pitiful job!...oh wait!!!!

I tried to take out one of them with the SRV guns, it is impossible to do solo without this bug mentioned here. Even the massive Turrets that can take down ships are hard to kill thankfully they have a hard time hitting the SRV.

I've heard of people using big ships to just ram them and then bug out really quick. I'm not sure I'm willing to try that though.

that's weird in my game those only fire on ships and not on my srv

Your Wrong it is far from impossible Using either terrain or other obstacles it is fairly easy it only takes time and most of the ammo in reserve. Even without terrain at far range their guns are horribly inaccurate I can sit there blasting it in turret mode at a idle and not take any damage and just dodge the occasional missile volley when fired.

I recently fought one myself in the SRV, and almost died twice (insta repair be thanked, one happened with 8% hull left after the last missle) and I'm not likely gonna attempt it again without an advantage on my side...

But I had a few thoughts after the combat what I've done wrong (pretty much everything) and how I could have done it better given that I had no advantages at hand.
So one thought was that the turret when manually aimed is extremely accurate over long distance, so one approach could be fighting it over range and just shoot down the missles, they turn extremely sharp but they are rather slow, and it's repeaters are barely a threat at all over distance, much like base's AA cannons.
Another idea was trying to stay below it (in the hopes the missles wouldn't be fired or hit itself at best) and blow up it's repeaters. I attempted to wreck it's heat system but that didn't do much as far as I could tell, maybe shorten it's repeater fire duration but not enough to make it worth taking said repeaters right in the face.
Taking out the AG missles was my first idea but killed by the fact that these are mounted on it's back, so you'd need to be above it to hit them.

Easiest way is though to just use the ship, the goliath's durable but even my Asp can blow it up with 2x s2 gimbaled pulse lasers, just gotta be faster than it launching the AA missles, these hurt A LOT...

Also we can shoot a ship's engines, why can't we simply blow up it's 'engines' too? : /

My Type 6 recently accidently sat on one. Apparently it was affective enough to destroy it.
I think it was a 600Cr fine
Then many more goliaths firing on me for destroying their friend
Then I think the starport took offense and launched missles.
Then my type 6 blew up after a mass of incoming missles.
And now I have a 33,000 bounty on my head in that system.

Hmm, that was meant to be effective, but I suppose affective also works if you consider they both have AI. Rough love.

So the Goliath missiles actually inflict damage on shields?
What warheads do they use and where can we buy them?

Okay, not impossible, maybe with the right tactic not difficult. But it is still wrong that it takes almost all your ammo to kill one.

From the secret NPC gun store. They also have railguns with infinite ammo and those FSD's that allow Eagles to jump the same distance as an Asp.

Was around half for me, I started the combat nearly full and ended with like 500~700 left?
But yeah, my first encounter with one was aborted because I had 800 shots left and at 300 was he still at 60% so I bugged off xD forgot I could have insta reloaded. Ammo's cheap o.o

Corvette with 6 racks of dumbfire missiles can take out the turrets with one salvo each. Goliaths are down in 1-2 hits, then just hit anything else that moves, drop in, go in with the SRV for the data point and run out again. Easy.. Dumbfire missiles are ridiculously overpowered against outposts.

Or if auto level wouldn't keep interferring with aiming: snipe the stuff with fixed lasers from 2km (1km probably does it too).

I ignore the goliath now. I just take out a turret from my asp with a dumbfire, then the turret on the roof. I then land my asp on the building landing pad. (all the while my asp is getting some hits but 4 pips on shields, but not many), get in SRV and dismiss ship. As Im on the roof the goliath cant get me easily. I just duck behind stuff. I then drive to data point still with 4 pips on shields, target data point, download and then drive like mad off roof and into the distance towards a turret. The goliath then hits the turret, gets a spanking whilst I drive off the required distance and recall ship.

Yeah, ramming makes short work of them.

That was in a Python, think it can be done in small ships no bother too.

There's vid somewhere where someone takes down a base in a Sidewinder with a single dumbfire.
He rams the Goliath and loses like 10% hull. He had already lost his shields at that point.

If you can hit the generator powering the turrets it only takes 1 dumbfire. A corvette is massive overkill.
A Viper (lasers for skimmers, dumbfires for turrets) is enough.
