Do you have any proof that they're a force to be reckoned with? Also, considering USS's - how exactly will a Thargoid get in my instance?

The Galaxy is perfectly safe because the game mechanics don't allow for anything else. Also, if commanders are blowing them out the sky easy peasy mode which they have been (by flying backwards) and then they takeover the galaxy that would be ridiculous lol
 
You mean to say you have a request FOR frontier, not FROM them. I was wondering what request they made of you.

Also, yes really. Now its explained you can't fix it, which is fine.

Anyway, USS has not really changed in the 2 years I have played ED, maybe more variety and slightly easier to drop into? There isn't much of an incentive to go looking for them beyond the engineer grind, and when I do drop in on one, it's never felt like much of an event. They are overdue a facelift, anything that makes them feel less RNG driven and 'gamey' gets my vote.
 
I agree they could be improved.

What bothers me most about them is that I have to stop, target one, and wait -- just to see what it is.

That means that I normally just pass them by while doing other things, because there is nothing to catch my attention.

If they resolved automatically as I passed by, then I'd have some choices to make when I see an interesting one while travelling or doing missions, etc.

As it is now, I just ignore them unless I need something that I know might be inside one.
 
Actually I've been using them a lot lately, just to see how the game mechanics work. That is why I believed we need this change as what we got now really feels detached to the rest of the game.
 
I'm all for a new type of USS that would require using a new scanning mechanic. The same could be also used for the Search and Rescue system. BUT. I would also totally keep the current 'appearing into your face' mechanic. It's perfect as a fun little stop while doing other things and is a relaxed way to get some mats and stop the grind for some minutes.
 
What we got now need to be redesigned, you could have a mechanic that will do what you do now, by using filters. However I would like it to be in a new console / window where you can manage all the signals, maybe as a part of the comms menu.

I think the two systems could work together side by side.
 
I think it'd be nice if uss could lead to missions like escort npc wing mission, or joining an npc wing to retrieve some passengers from a wreck, recruiting a new npc crew member (assuming new npc missions and storylines)
 
We've got a mechanic for discovering & resolving unknown materials etc with the SRV scanner.
Perhaps a ship version where you do a similar thing would work.
Even better would be to create the ornery view as shown in the initial concepts which displays USS so that you can target them and actively fly towards them.

100% agree that a graphical representation of the system like in the ornery map would be great, but even without a map some new way of managing signals could be made.
