Dear Fdevs : What ARE you working on right now?

I should imagine FD's priority right now is getting the Elite PS4 release out of the door. As any future content updates are going to need to be coded for the PS4 version too, I think maybe that is having a delaying effect, with all else on the back burner at the moment until PS4 version is done.

Any news on new content that FD are working for future release I suspect they might want to keep under wraps to announce at the E3 Expo, 13-15 June.

If FD really wants to continue console support they need to have a system where it takes a few days to recompile code for each console. We cannot have consoles taking away from the game...

How much exploring can you do in what are basically the same station types?
How much exploration can you do on what are barren, lifeless rocks?

Both would get really tired, really fast.

You could ask exactly the same question for the current state of the game where everyone is permanently grafted to their seat. Still lots and lots of people like to explore those same 400 billion beige "barren, lifeless rocks". Over and over again. Space legs would just add to the fun and immersion of what all those people who like exploring already find interesting.

That said, I kind of agree with Andovar that *some* fleshing out of the basic bare-bones exploration 'gameplay' (if you can call it that) might be nice first.

If I had to guess, I would say some big news for the week of E3...

I don't think that they will talk of anything else than the ps4 release at e3.
Maybe also about their third game, but i think they will keep it for the gamerscon.

It always turns this way, and I'm not sure why, though I suspect it to be a combination of Frontier's seeming Oh-Look-A-Squirrel or What-We-Drew-From-Sandro-Hat method of feature releases, and/or the general audience's Oh-Look-a-Squirrel attention span. But every single time Legs gets mentioned, we go right straight to "But there's all this other stuff to do first".

I don't disagree. Not even a little.

Exploration needs at least 1/10 the attention Combat has gotten.
We need to be able to land on planets with atmospheres.
We need to be able to blow each other up in gas giant atmospheres.
We need to be able to ram each other's SRVs into streams of lava on lava worlds.
We need multi-pew not only useful, but to allow for the mechanical crew mentioned in the ancient planning document.
We need a lot of other things, long before we need to walk around.

But that doesn't mean I don't want to be able to walk around - I do, and I want it to be meaningful.
I'm just able to separate the "I want to see this in the future." from "What remains to be done".

Just realized it's only 3 weeks until E3 which would explain the recent silence from FD. They have to show something substantial there so I guess they are extremely busy right now. There is a time to talk and there is a time to work, where the latter is NOW.

That very well may be true, and more than like is precisely what is going on.

However... That doesn't excuse the total communication blackout of recent weeks. I have seen a few posts from Zac and Ed that have attempted to calm everyone down, promising more info SOON... But I think this whole secrecy thing has really outstayed its welcome with the community and really needs to go, yesterday.

Most of us have had it up to "HERE" with this type of lame marketing tactic used by far too many game developers these days. It doesn't build excitement with established games waiting for much needed updates. It only serves to ANNOY the player base to no end.

Just look around this forum to see how well this "Secrecy" approach is going down with the majority of the community.

Enough is enough! TELL US what is going on NOW! Not two months from now. We don't care about surprises! We need to know when to expect some much needed bug fixes and and resolutions to other game breaking issues that have been languishing for months!

(As I stare at the "Slow Down for Auto Dock" that remains stuck on my screen after using the DC to land at a station. It remains stuck in the middle of my screen all through departure and will not clear until I jump to another system after leaving the station -- Been dealing with this for two months now)

Sometimes I think FD might assume some sort of wits by us players, but then they can be so off betimes.. :p

They are a games company.

They are selling a product.

They want to make money.

We are their customers.

In among their ranks are.. Media teams, advertising, community managers, community liaison teams, developers, etc.

Maybe? Who knows all of those people are so busy working on the content that they can't communicate. I bet Ed is hard at work scripting new alien encounters as we speak.

Perhaps at one point when the threads like this started to appear on their own forum, again who couldn't see it coming, they would think to write a line or two.

But, instead we wait until the 20th incarnation, till we get a reply that says basically "Hi, yes we are all still here, we haven't done a runner (yet)."

Don't rep you much GG7...but that earned one [yesnod]

Then the usual demands for more content in these things far outside the original focus of the game....and that would be you're a pilot who flies a ship.

Outside the original focus of the game? (video is from 2012)

It doesn't. There's a separate console team at FD for ED.

They are engaging with the community. They post on the forums and play CQC once a week. It's just that this isn't really what the community seems to be after.

Wow posting a few post and playing COC once a week. I am applying for that job when Ed leaves. I can do a bisquit review as well

and why not? left to their own devices hasn't worked out too well for them has it?

They got your money didn't they? Seems their devices did work.

But I don't disagree with the sentiment that it would be nice to know what new feature has been drawn from Sandro's hat for 2.4.

Parents: Father Christmas is coming.
Kids: What's he bringing?
Parents: Well, it's a surprise!
Kids: Write Father Christmas a letter asking what he is bringing

I mean it might work, right?

:)

There are so many rumors going around on Elite: Dangerous right now. About fantastic things that isn't even dreamed of yet in the gaming world.

I understand that the devs need to take their time, explore, think and imagine stuff as they go. I will be waiting with anticipation for their next little addition to the game. It is already a fantastic game whatever anyone says!

In due time, this will become the ultimate space simulation of all time. ( If it isn't already... )

for my part,
i am hoping they are working on the anounced patch 2.3.1 and they only need so long because they want to surprise us with MORE then the anounced bandaid fixes.
together with their internal implementation and testing of the great war against aliens that will pop up all over the colonies.

This thread is exactly the reason why we can't have anything nice, but whatever they are working on its going to be great, believe me, its going to be beautiful, we're gonna make a great game and you're going to pay for it.

Believe me, David Braben OBE and his incredible designers and developers are going to make FD billions and billions of Dollars.

In all seriousness however, I wouldn't expect anything given how toxic the forums are at the moment, any news they post will be shot down. I would make everyone wait until they are ready to announce what they want to announce.
