did you think that an eventual translation into italian language could broaden your costumer base?
Italian language is the fourth language taught in the world.
Then, oh well, not to have pioneering spirit or be afraid of the business risk is a different thing.

Okay, I don't want to come off as racist or ignorant or anything, but Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese are all descended from Latin. We know we're getting Spanish with 1.6. Would Italian speaking players be able to use Spanish and have a good understanding of the words as a sort of "Good enough" until Italian translations come?

Depends, I live in Italy, I speak Italian and Spanish (I lived in Spain too) and yes, one can help you 'get by' in the other. Some people seem to adapt from one to the other no problem and other people find the other language completely incomprehensible.
But personally, even today, I prefer playing games in my mother tongue (in my case English), even though I'm fluent in both Italian and Spanish. It was one of the reasons I eventually went to Steam, being able to download and install my games in English instead of playing Italian or Spanish versions was much better.
TLDR: Whether or not folks can 'get by' in another language, most people prefer to play games in their own language.

Nah, I am from Norway, and there are only 5M norwegians in the world; We do not expect to play games in our own language, and do not presume that we should demand it. The world languages should be enough for anyone.
Not to put too fine a point on it, I personally think it is a tad bit arrogant. Although I do understand your point of view, coming from a country who have a tradition of dubbing all foreign movies and TV shows into the native language rather than providing translation text on the baseline of the movie/TV series. Not trying to troll here, just sharing my thoughts.
On a more immersive note: don't you think we would have ground down the number of popular languages to a handful by the year 3302?
Edit: Too bad the Roman Empire blew it; italian is a much better language than English; would have loved to have it as a world language... [praise]

Despite the link to Latin they are very different, especially Portuguese. It's like asking us to get by with German or French because it's 'close enough'.
Dunno, the internet made English the "world language". If everyone just learns two languages, his native one and English, we all could communicate and understand each other. No need for twenty translations. That's how international buisiness is doing it since years.

Ey remember when they censored Italian (or was it Spanish?) words back in GPP? Even if they were English words but ment something bad in Italian/Spanish. lol
I'm here and I speak for others 12 mates that play with me but not speak/write english.
They leave The Division for its poor contents and join Elite Dangerous.
We wing (something I have problem to wing but this is another story) every day and play several hours to Elite.
I have learned them a lot of the game but I think if you will add (like I hope) others contents they could drop the game because already they do not understand all.
For example all powerplay features are unplayable for them because they do not understand them very well.
Or galnet infos that are fantastic to complete the game background, etc.
Please help us to continue to play this fantastic game all together...
