Death from oxygen depletion should result in pilot blackout - not ship destruction

Didnt read all the replies but you don't die.

He/she/it rasps a bit then blacks out and you hear the computer say eject. So you lose oxygen but bail before death. You are then in a life support capsule that blinks to a home station.

The ship then self destructs so no one can get their hands on your info and ship as it's all linked in.

Makes perfect sense to me and is v cool.

Of course if you want a bit more risk involved when you eject (because, let's face it, ejecting in combat in an isolated system far from the Core Worlds is a lot more dangerous than crashing into a station in Sol) you could always use this table I'm tinkering with :D

I'd go a bit further. Death by oxygen depletion should result in absolute death. It's a bit of nonsense in the game, the if you suffocate your ship explodes but you live another day. Who should die when there's no life support, pilot or ship.

load new commander if you suffocate rather than eject

Yeah, i always found it weird that even with life support depleted we could somehow survive this possibly long long wait/trip back to station. (Which btw happens instantly somehow)

Of course, this is a game and we cant ve forced to wait 14 days to be able to play again. But the current (escape pod) system is clearly just a very simple way to solve this "issue".

Currently it just doesnt add up wih the rest of the game, some sort of clone or transhumsnism would fit in much better imo.
However they treat it it will be very unrealistic and raise questions, but its much more likely for a data package signal to reach a station anywhere soon then a small randomly ejected escape pod that logically lacks propulsion, ftl capability and life support.

Honestly I just think a symbolic one minute "time out" before being allowed to take your replacement ship would be in order. It's not too long to wait (you could probably use a drink anyway) and it would help kill the feeling that you've just popped back into the game with no time passing at all. Would also cut down on those A-holes who spawn to rearm their missiles at dock and go back out into the fray within seconds of getting killed, giving whoever killed them a chance to get away.

The real reason the ships explode even if you only run out of air is that the ship manufacturers have conspired to assure that there is the least amount of salvage out there to force pilots to buy new ships and not older restored ships (eagle withstanding since it's stated in-game that they don't manufacture them anymore)
