Death should be more than a minor inconvenience in Elite Dangerous?

pre amble.. It has occurred to me that dying in this game is an easy option. ie within present mechanics it is easy to re-spawn to fight another day - ED has to be different to be Dangerous !

A point raised by someone in another thread created a debate. To cut a story short… here’s a scenario:
You lose (died) in a fight with another player, get transported off via pod to the last save point for rebirth (similar to if the server failed or your computer crashed) where you are able to go back to the fight you just lost (via launch of ship etc) with all your weapons/ship, as new, to potentially take vengeance on said killer who has suffered damage in the fight. Who wouldn't? it's easy.

Sadly that debate has gone through the circles of “didn’t you read the manual”, “carebears want to change the game to suit them” and various other “this is how online games play” and other passionate opinions lacking reasoned suggestions for debate… so as an alternative to going around in yet more circles I tempt fate and offer it up to the serious masses for discussion.

Death (or ship destruction followed by pod delivery to nearest spawn point for the pedantic) should be more than a minor inconvenience in this game

Suggestions from the forum since Alpha so far include: (please excuse creative license)

Get a life, this is a game
Your’re a woos, take it like a girl
I’ve been a gamer all my life and my friends thinks I’m great
Why change the mechanic of death - all gamers respawn to fight another day since time began
Increase the time it takes to respawn
Block instance for defeated
Death incurs a time delay (x) till respawn
Move dead person into a pod and have them self navigate to nearest station by remote control and wait till till they can find the insurance to pay for everything by calling a friend and if they answer write down everything they said and submit it to a committee for appraisal and only then when the devs have time to respond to calling software prompts will you request be considered but the user must understand ques are like at busy times.. etc

…and my favourite; ‘send the loser to the other side of the universe to gather up a skill to win a battle to come back for a winning one’ - yes this is my option and i will suffer the consequences but it would make me think twice about annihilating a poor innocent sidewinder with no cargo.

Elite Dangerous… Blaze your own trail, xxxt on your own path.. but take the consequences of your actions or inactions.. They will all be recorded for Elite !

Gauntlet down:D

(TL;DR) Too long didn’t read:
Should death be more than an inconvenience in a new game called: ELITE DANGEROUS

This was done to death when it was discussed two years or so again, hence what we have now and hopefully Iron Man mode. If you want the Iron man mode then please request it as its not even on their radar to add right now (although they do have more pressing concerns).

This is the best solution. If you want your avatars death to be a game ending event, play ironman. It not then do not. Its entirely optional.

Iron man mode... not coming soon (tm) or whatever symbol they're using

This is not about iron man mode this is about the mechanics of coming back from being defeated being easy

...

or 'losing' being not that much of a deterrent

That thread started off by the OP stating he flew into a system to deliberately bait a CMDR he was told was there by chums over Teamspeak. Said player B did indeed interdict player A. Player A kills player B. So far, so Elite, right?

However, Player A then starts chugging toward the Station to get repaired after the battle. OP then stated within a minute, in fact 45 seconds, player B got back to the station, went through the insurance malarkry, launched from the station, found player A in the cluster of targets, interdicted him then killed him. Player A then redacted his 45 second statement and admitted it would not be easy to do what player B did and he should have jumped to another station for repairs.

The chances of getting killed in these circumstances are very, very small.

You might have cut the story short, but maybe cut it too much.

The mechanics of getting your ship killed are simple and do not need changing, just in case one player of a multitude came off equal in a situation he engineered from the get go. In football terms it was a score draw, 1-1, but sometimes that one point just isn't good enough, right?

i need to interdict here ... we've been ere before

It's not about the another OP's vague description of event we're discussing here it's the FEAR OF DEATH - a consequence of dying - Please don't derail this - think out of box

due respect (-

Yes I know, again not coming soon is because people aren't really asking for it as much, which is my point.

After a year of Alpha's, beta's and gamma's I don't see any major changes to the deterrence of losing stuff which you've bought up as it won't just affect one group but the entire game itself. We've gone over and over on this and nothing new here, sorry to be negative, but the best bet is again to hope we can get iron Man mode a little sooner

IMO this would be quite tweakable with the insurance mechnic. Of course, early backers often have more insurance (new players are 95%), so feel the pain of death even less. I'm not sure how easily they'd be able to, for example, double rebuy costs by making default insurance 90% instead of 95% withing annoying backers.

Yes please do. Frontier needs to see that there is demand for this playstyle. :)

im an alpha too... i guess iron man mode is quite ...er less marketable so the FD wont release that for a while...

pleeeeze back on topic...

Perma death, DayZ style, starting on the beach with flashlight or in this case with Sidewinder, no unsurance(this is for the noobs). Actualy sidewinder is good ship we need something made of paper like the Eagle and the firepower of a Hauler....without shields, engine boost and 5 min. oxygen left + space zombies truing to eat your hull.

On a serious note, ED should be more challenging, i agree.

Surely a small delay before re-spawn is a simple and useful precaution against malpractice such as repeated suicide attacks? It adds a bit of realism. It's a minor consequence that doesn't affect your game assets and doesn't upset game balance.

The game could give a message such as "Your escape pod is awaiting rescue" or "You are in intensive care and receiving regenerative therapy, the procedure will take about 10 minutes" or "Cannot connect to server". Time to make a cup of tea, or say Hello to the family.

Then don't use it as the first argument of your post and hang everything else off it.

The consequence of dying in the game is you lose your ship and everything in it. This happens if someone blows your ship up, you boost into a big tanker coming into the station, the station takes a dislike to you and guns you to death or you get too close to a neutron star.

As a consequence, you slide down the snake to a lower number on the board, lost credits / ship / cargo of leathery eggs, whatever. Now, if you happen to have been making a million or two per hour in the game, that might not be a big drop, but for someone like me, with an Explorer Adder with about 300k in the bank I am dropping much closer to square one, do you see? Fear of Death is not the same in these two examples, I feel.

So why add any more complexity to the situation? I am genuinely interested on who this would help and what the min/max solution is in terms of players helped / inconvenienced?

BTW, I have no problem with thinking. In fact I'm not a one trick pony, I'm a field of ponies.

Death is more than a minor inconvenience; Upon death you lose any cargo you have and have to rebuy your ship with credits youve spent your personal time to earn.

My last death propably cost me between 1,5 and 2 hours of my personal time.

If I want to risk doubling or tripling that on a revenge quest it is then most certainly not without potential punishment or inconvenience.

If you slam me with instant additional punishment on top of being sentenced to indentured servitude driving a space milk truck on the time of my own choosing I am most likely just gonna call it quits every time for the night on spot.
