Debris fields ... is there a point to them ?

So last night I came across as "USS" called a Debris Field which seemed to contain .... wait for it ... bits of ship (I assume) floating around in space. Nothing on scanner, nothing to interact with. So ... what is the purpose of these things ?.

FD are really pushing the boat out content wise then .. :(

Content ? Don't be silly man. It's part of your Advanced Pilot's Licence Test. Boost with full throttle and avoid the debris with Flight Assist Off. If you don't die try again because there's no reward anyway.

Come on guys you're being negative for it's own sake. In anarchy systems you can scoop them up and take them to the station to sell on the black market. Sometimes what you have scooped will double up as a mission reward, black boxes for instance. It's quite a fun an relaxing way of making a few credits.

I guess I was unlucky to find an empty one.

I really want to find derelict capital ships or abandoned stations with doors to blast open and find some interesting cargo only to have a wing of scavengers to drop in with lights beaming in. We need more reasons to go cold in this game and use stealth. :D

You'll sometimes see Navy / System Security ships leave the USS after the USS pops. That's a hint there's a destroyed vessel there.

It's the attention to detail that counts.

There was also talk of salvage claiming to be introduced later, then you could maybe cash in on the derilict hulks themselves.

Was this around the Furbaide community goal?
.
I flew into one of those several times last night, in Volungu (near Furbaide). First time, there was another CMDR shooting a steady stream of pirates, and they were steadily dropping "Basic Medicine", which is required for the Furbaide community goal. The remainder of the times I flew into the "Debris Field", I either found debris and nothing else, or a lone pirate that dropped Basic Medicine.
.
I assumed it was a way to get Basic Medicine for us non-traders, and still be able to participate in the community event. Does anyone know for sure, if selling stolen Basic Medicine to a black market updates the community goal?

Worth visiting

I've just spent half an hour at a debris field, they are really lucrative place to bounty hunt. There was a steady stream (sometimes faster than I could shoot them) of aggressive pirates and no friendlies.

Very fun, very dangerous and very profitable.

Are you sure you're not confusing this with a RES ?

Eh... USS are not that great. The slight risk of being scanned while scooping in patroled space is enough to make it not worth it since the fine is always at least double.

And scooping in anarchy areas is pointless because you are better off simply hunting. And selling to black markets can make you lose rep.

Seems as good as thread as any to bring back from the dead.

Ok 2.1 here - no pirates seems like a degraded emissions zone (I took 1 out of three materials) - materials no private data no pirates.
Key is is seems like a fixed scenario not a USS. I found it around Wanggu 6, faction states are 3 x none and 2 x outbreak. Obviously there are the seeking meds fixed points as well.

This seems different to what is described in this thread and others.
