Newcomer / Intro Deep core mechanics of the game

oh, what I forgot: The actual cracking. I usually need two charges into low strength fissures. I put a high yield charge in the first one, and then try to judge if I need a medium or high charge for the second one. Sometimes this goes wrong and I either need to disarm a charge, or use another one, occasionally the rock has no low strength fissures. But three charges is usually the max.

On my Krait I had 7 collectors (one 3C multi controller with 4 and one 5A controller with 3 limpets), and they usually hoover up the fragments faster than I can shoot the surface deposits. With only 3 or 4 limpets there might be some waiting for the limpets.

And lastly: Remember to fill your refinery, it's (in my case with a 2A refinery) 6 tonnes of free cargo space!

On my Krait

Nothing against the Kraits, but...

The Clipper is the best Core miner out there. Looking for cores while boosting to 610+ (even with a cargo full).
Impossible to beat that.

Sure, filling 192t of cargo takes much more time than 128t, so session playing time might be an important part in choosing the right ship.

Right, but the clipper needs a large pad, right? Also, I hate the clipper (and, by extension, the Cutter) . My Krait boosts to 530ish (I think), which is still fast enough to face plant into a rock :) . The python does 192t, but it's much slower (440ish boost, I think). But I can't be bothered to fill 192t anyway.

I'm with Helmut, I also use a Krait II (128t). It's set up for core mining, and I swap over one hardpoint for subsurface (drill-bang rockets in place of seismic charges). This ship is fast, has good jump for flying to far-flung best-sell stations. It is armed to fight interdictors and teach them a lesson (which only lasts until they die in the explosion, so not sure it's really a teachable moment) and has a 5A scoop to make those journeys a snap.

Aside from the numbers, I prefer the Krait over ships like the Python for it's superior agility, which is nice when flipping around the rocks to plant charges and rockets. It has superior cockpit visibility, especially overhead. And it's faster, which in mining isn't really a big deal, but speed always has its uses.

By the way, this is "Spiny Norman", my current core miner (the 3C collector is a multi mining controller, but Coriolis doesn't support that yet). It is more or less thrown together with various spare parts, but it works well. It's not the fastest nor the most efficient, has limited jump range, but it has some oomph to scare off the occasional npc pirate, and I really like python's cockpit in VR and enjoy sitting in it for a while.

My current strategy is to find a system that pays well, and then find a mining system one or two jumps away. If that doesn't work I either swap one cargo rack for a scoop, or park my carrier above the ring and swap to a longer range cargo ship for selling.

well this is all depressing to see how awful i am at finding cores VS other people... i struggle to find even 1 core per 20 minutes at MOST....

We have multi-controllers now?
Damn, I've been in the Black for far too long again. Gotta check that out, eventually, the sheer volume of wasted space on controllers was always one of my pet peeves.

Try different place, then. Hotspots aren't all equal in the first place and those that appear in a third party tool or some mining guide are usually ground to dust by other players.

So venture beyond the Bubble borders and try your luck at the frontier. :)

Aye, 3C mining multi-controller can put up 4 collector limpets that have the same characteristics as 1C collectors
Same multi controller can put up prospectors, but same thing - 1C prospectors - not exactly optimal for laser mining although it does not matter for deep core.

On smaller ships this is still a godsend, I think.

Ask Inara ofc, but remember about the bulk tax on minerals.

Late to the party, but for many of the questions you asked previously you might get some more insight from my video (in sig). Tips are in subtitles (I cba to do a proper video edit and voiceover, too busy).

After a year of alexandrite mining: where do i sell it? :)

Check at the ususal sites - Inara, eddb - and use your current location as reference. Keep in mind that you want
  • high demand ("Volume Tax")
  • recent data (anything more than a day old or so is likely outdated already)
With that (and Sol as reference system), eddb returns a couple of stations in Sol itself and Duamta which are shelling out at least Galactic Average at >10kt demand, so you should be good if your transfer ship holds less than 1kt.
