Deep Impact

Having come back to Elite due to the mining which was interesting for a while but now has become tedious due to hot spots having anything but what they are supposed to have in them, hopefully this will be corrected.

Anyhow I am watching the film Deep Impact and wouldn't it be cool if we had comet's or large space rocks to land on and mine?

This could also be a community goal to set charges and blow a space rock up before it hits a planet?
I guess you would use a vehicle with a drilling rig to set charges

Yes it would be cool if Fdev finally fully implimented comets instead of the invisable placeholders we have now.

Wait, we got placeholders? Comets were actually supposed to be a thing?!?

Yes, comets are already in the game, and have been since the beginning. They're just invisible, so you can't see them or interact with them, or even find them easily. Sometimes, you can find a space station "orbiting nothing"; it's actually orbiting an invisible comet. Here's the obligatory link to the thread with the evidence.

There was a now-lost dev post which stated that comets would be fully implemented once new and exciting gameplay could be invented and introduced for them. So... I guess we're still waiting?

Thanks for the info!

Cervix cracking jokes aside, it would be neat to just have comets and rogue planetoids in the game at all. Even better if they could be landed on to hitch a ride through a solar system or for mining purposes. I'd crack Halley's like an egg if given a chance.
Though I suspect landing on something traveling 250,000Km an hour, (approximate speed of Halley's Comet), will prove quite impossible with the current speed limits imposed on our ships in ED.

Hey, I'd love to just watch the occasional meteor impact on all of the pock-marked moons and planetoids out there. I'm a sucker for little details like that.

Of course, with RNGesus hating me the way he does, I'd go poof from a random meteor hitting me within minutes of landing ;)

It would be cool, but it would be a mini-game like interdiction and the result would be a text message.

This is exactly the sort of things that FDEV is not able to do, unfortunately.
The complete game is designed in "boxes" that are simply not able to physically affect each other and this is one of the biggest game limitation to engaging gameplay.
So consider the case you enter the instance (box) of such asteroid. Even if you can't destroy it in time it will never have an impact on game elements outside its box.

If I can to set charges and blow a space rock up before it hits a planet, I change my name from Cmdr to Bruce Willis.

If I can also meet Liv Tyler ... ;)

I keep checking back in on this thread, expecting to see a recorded voice message from Sir Morgan Freeman, talking about the future of the human race, and explaining some sort of interstellar physics things, just to keep us calm yet on a heightened state of alert at the same time.

Maybe my imagination is just getting the better of me....

Edit - yes I did raise him to Knight of the Realm, intentionally ;)

just curious, and sorry if i'm handing you eggs to suck, but are you using a pulse wave scanner to identify target rocks? with this, those rocks with a high yield are a VERY bright yellow (even if it's not what you're actually looking for). That combined with night vision mode to visually identify fissures helps find a haul of the intended yield, or at least something else of value. made 120million yesterday just working it out :)
