Degraded Emissions [Threat 4]

I was in a high security system and I say saw this USS and decided to check it out.

When I jumped in, there were a lot of ships from the Federal Navy: I noticed two Corvettes, a Type-9 several FGS, FDS, FAS, and other small ships. All green!

They appeared to be guarding a black box that was illegal to pick. As I approached, some ships started firing and I decided to flee. As I fled, they all turned red and started attacking me.

I managed to high wake.

My question is, why did an entire fleet of allies turned on me without warning?
Has this happened to anyone else?

I made a thread about this ealier this year. The general consensus is that they are doing shady stuff and you "saw too much" I guess.

Would be nice if they said anything alomg those lones before they all decide to murder you though.

Rogue Federal Navy ships, you caught them committing illegal activities and they don't like witnesses. ^As above.^

Kidding aside, FD announced a long time ago of random "terrorist" activities, this would fit. I like to run into these situations in my Corvette for the challenge.

Need to be more common.

Did you check the text box? They likely warned you to leave the crime zone or they open fire, i was baffled by this once as well so dropped into more of these uss's and finally noticed the warning before they turned on me

I wish I did, there were lots of text comms, but I had not time to check it out and sadly there is no in-game way to view recent log messages.

Literally, I only had 10 seconds before they opened fire during which I had to assess the situation and prepare a high wake destination since I was in a Python and mass-locked by the Covettes.

I think this is such a good opportunity for some interesting scenario, but it happens way too fast to read the comms and at the same time assess the situation to make a decision.

For who might be interested, I dug through the logs to find out what happened:

Basically:
"2018-10-21T04:56:08Z", "event":"USSDrop", "USSType":"$USS_Type_Salvage;", "USSType_Localised":"Degraded emissions detected", "USSThreat":4
"2018-10-21T04:56:12Z":
Federal Navy Fighter chat:
56:12: "Lead to all patrol craft secure the area and wait for re-enforcements to arrive."
56:12: "Lead to command, point alpha reached, perimeter established, awaiting further orders."
56:12: "Lead to command, point alpha reached, perimeter established, awaiting further orders."
56:19: "ADCS ready. No hostiles sighted. All hands on standby. "
56:20: "Lead to all patrols, keep chatter to a minimum. We're here to do a job, so lets get to it."
56:29: "ADCS ready. No hostiles sighted. All hands on standby. "
56:30: "Holding the line... "
56:31: "UnderAttack", "Target":"You"
56:31: "UnderAttack", "Target":"You"
56:31: "UnderAttack", "Target":"You"
56:32: "UnderAttack", "Target":"You"
56:59: "StartJump", "JumpType":"Hyperspace"

So I see no indication on why I was attacked by the Allied Federal Navy.

On the contrary. The answer is obvious.

You are not the federal navy.

No different than walking into the middle of an active crime scene with a loaded weapon.

I see your point. I suppose it makes some sense.

Yet they never mind if I drop on their convoy Thread 4 (with assassins following me in which case they even help).

This reminds me of the AI Relic instances, which are also found in Degraded Emissions with a non-zero Threat level (not sure if it's 2, 3 or 4 as it's been a while). There were also 'Gold Trap' instances (in the same threat level iirc) that I think are also still around but not as rare. Generally speaking, in both these cases there are likely to be a lot of high-end ships that a single player will struggle to face and you had to try and lure them away or very rapidly scoop the prize. Except for rescue ships, I have found that any ship I meet in Degraded Emissions will be hostile, although some are the pirate archetype that scans you first to find out if you have cargo before opening fire. I don't think you did anything wrong here.

Ever heard of a speed trap? This is just Elites version of "entrapment" with a bit of a childish flair... Yeah, go ahead and pick up that box... I double dog dare you!

i think proximity plays a role also. i wonder if you will be fired upon if you close your throttle immediately upon dropping to normal space and don't move or move away from the point of interest. i believe checkpoints work the same way as i've been fired on in checkpoints while allied to the faction just flying close the main ship. also, were your weapons drawn?

Sounds like a kinda neat event. Of course, knowing FD, this is where they completely drop the ball at the end. You could defeat all those ships and steal the box. Only to find that all you can do with it is sell it at a Black Market for 500 credits.

In my experience yeah theyll try to kill you regardless of distance a few Second nds after you drop into the instance.

Or just... Not be hostile at all.

I propose that the new challenge is to successfully pick up the box and somehow escape alive with the box! :)

I suspect that a small, ultra-fast stealth-ship (with a lot of chaff) might be a strategy...

As a prize for success I am offering one impressed nod with raised eyebrow and a "Nice job!"

I did get closer to the box, but did not attempt to pick it up.

Not sure about hardpoints, I think they were never deployed.

A fast small ship... Maybe or maybe not considering you need to tank a bit.

Yes FD could build on this. Just a generic stolen Black box is not worth the hassle.

not exactly. the bgs plays a role.

that is, if you are working in a low population system a single transaction may help you reach your desired state. this scenario gives you a fun way to accomplish that given you add a bit of your own creative story in the process.

if you shoot one of the navy ships you will cause a negative point of influence for the controlling faction. if you kill one of them two points. if you grab the black box without shooting and sell it at a black market, if there is one in the system, you could cause some negative influence if the controlling system is not anarchy and positive influence if it is.

remember that every action you take in game has an impact on the bgs, which in turn affects factions and their states, which in turn dictates what kind of missions are available.

Tomorrow's livestream is on the BGS, someone (not me, I'll be at work natch) could ask about these sort of USSs and what they mean.
