Design decision forum member

I did not pledged just for that perk, but was one interesting thing taked into consideration when I was deciding the amount of my pledge. I hope it will be worth the wait.

well i really hope that the PBF/DDF will be a totally seperate web address to the the standard Frontier forum.

Yep, we are a bunch of old farts in the DDF (I'm 55 myself ;)). This has both qualities and disadvantages.

- As more "mature" individuals, we will:
  • tend to be on the conservative side of things, especially when it comes to game mechanics as we probably will try to redux the Elite and Elite Frontier in a new skin to a large extent.
  • Not shy away from a certain level of complexity in the game mechanics
  • tend to tone down the "twitch" level of the game

- On the other hand, we will
  • tend to be on the conservative side of things, wary and perhaps dismissive of some type of innovations.
  • try to guide the game to a play mechanic that will be acceptable for the age group, but might end up excluding others (as not challenging or "instant" enough).
  • end up making the perfect game for the age group, to find out that while the Baby boomer gen is the largest one, they end up being the least able (time and interest) of all the age group to the detriment of the success of E: D.

So in effect, the concentration of the older folks in the DDF might be a curse in disguise. We really will have to keep this in mind when FD seeks advice.

Well despite being not quite 30 yet I have been a fan since '88 ;)
Hopefully I can help 'balance' things :p

personally I hope that the PBF along with the DDF will be a seperate web address to the Frontier forums and treated as a seperate forum instead of being some sub section of this forum,

Hopefully with a separate server that can cope with extreme load too :p

Why?

With most forum software there is decent separation, and you don't have to look at the rest of it if you don't want to.

Most places just seems like more things for them to maintain and more things to keep an eye on.

Once the forum is established.

It will be interesting to create a survey that measures the various demographics of the DDF members.

This is very confusing. I keep thinking "when did I post there", only to find I didn't :D

because adding more sections to the official forum is making the place look untidy and if the DDF is a sub section of the PBF then its just unprofessional.
sure the software can do it but i thought Frontier Develpment was a professional company and not some clan forum.

keep it private keep it safe

Hi all,

I've merged another DDF thread into this one, so the DDF conversation can all be kept in the same place. Other threads will recieve similar treatment, in an attempt to make things a little tidier. ;)

Just a quick hello from another DDF member / duffer.

First played Elite when I was about 12 using a tape drive on a BBC. Dad thought he was buying the computer for educational purposes bless him. I guess I did spend about an hour or so making infinite loops in basic - 20 GOTO 10 :D Such nostalgia and excitement at the rebirth of elite! I remember being gobsmacked after spending ages painstakingly docking when my friend just ran full tilt at the station and rolled in at the last minute... I think I punched him - no respect for his elite status.

It'll be very interesting to see how the DDF and PBF are run and I'm looking forward to being part of it especially now I've read this thread - great to see so many mature & engaged contributors involved.

Now I need to get a version of elite up and running somehow as I fear my piloting skills, never the best, are now "a tad rusty" never mind "mostly harmless"!

I'm a bit surprised at the number of people who have said they don't intend to post their own design ideas on the DDF, and think the process should primarily be a reactive one.

The problem with the general forums is that threads tend to become a feature-splurge, with not much of an actual design process underpinning the discussion. But if DDF members were to post more complete and well thought-out designs, I think that would be a good thing. I happen to be very time-rich at the moment, as much of my job involves waiting in a car, so I would much rather spend my time scribbling ideas for weapons systems, than reading a book.

Obviously in 99.9% of cases, it would be FD's designs being used, but someone like myself would learn a lot from having their proposals critiqued.

Buddy I wouldn’t worry about that, I’ve got plenty of ideas that keep to the traditional ways of elite as well as ideas that would enhance Elite for the 21st century, and yes I am well open for debate on any of my suggestions And will happily stand down if someone was to put forward a valid argument.

Hello all.

Bar what is written on the pledge for £300 does anyone have any additional info about being a design decision forum member ?

My take on it is this, please let me know your views and if Ashley or anyone else from Frontier can shed more light that would be great.

1. Such a person would obviously have access to a restricted forum where they would be shown ship designs/station designs etc and they can comment and maybe even vote or at least they would have Frontier's closer ear.

2. I don't think that would cover things like gameplay design....or would it ?

3. Can I ask if there are any ELITE players here from 1984/85 that are part of that tier.

Cheers in advance everyone.

Its a fair question, what will be our roles as DDF members? Currently it is extremely vague - and I do hope for some clarification on the matter. I am growing ever increasingly concerned with the way in which these forums are being managed and delivered.

Equally, Sygyon (and who knows who else) is a pledger and now also further empowered beyond that of an official capacity. I hope I am wrong but I am very concerned in how things are going to work out here.

It is great that Michael has communicated with the KS community but there is something a miss here. Really.

For example.. Why is Jonty the person to be heralded as an icon, Why were recent decisions made regarding new forum moderators? How were those decisions made?

I'm not going to overly exaggerate these matters but Frontier needs to get its act together. Many people have pledged a lot of money to make this all happen - and I would hope that in a few weeks we can have a much better idea of what is going on.

What we need are clear guidelines on how all these important features will be effectively delivered. What will be the process of DDF members, how much say will they have, how will that work? Indeed, what about the other backers how will they be involved.

I do hope that we will see some clarification on these issues by February. I love the concept art but now let us have some better understanding of how things are going to work out./

This one stands out, obviously a smashing bloke with his witty 4 word forum replies.
But I really don’t want to see any refernce to the word Jonty within the game, the last thing I want to be reminded off is how much I spent backing this project every time I start the game up. But I’m sure there are a few pledgers’s who are happy to throw away their privilege to name a station/planet after someone else.
