Detailed Discovery Scanner

Anyone know its range? Wish there was a ping or something when it completes successfully, but it seems to make the same noise if it does anything or not

The range is based on the object you're scanning, from 5 ls for an asteroid cluster or very small planet to at least 2,000 ls for many stars. The closer you get to an object the faster it will scan. The noise does change, but it's kind of subtle, at least on my speakers, and you should hear the pinging sound get faster as the scan goes on.

If you're scanning asteroids, though, it will continue scanning forever even after it's completed. Once you can see the name of the asteroid field it's got all of the information it's going to get.

edit: Just to be sure, you're talking about the Detailed Surface Scanner, right? The Discovery Scanners are something different: 500 ls for the Basic, 1000 ls for the Intermediate, and no cap on the Advanced.

Detailed Surface Scanner's range varies depending on the radius of the object. I do not know the exact formula but I do know most moons is around 6-12 LS and stars that is class M and larger is around 4000-10000 LS.

And what about the suns? Does it immediately gets all the needed info on the sun you just jumped into? 'Cause I can't see or hear any change.

You have to select the star and point your ship directly to start scanning. If you jumped into the system, immediately stop and start scanning the star when it is selectable.

Oh... thx

EDIT
And if I was the first to jump into the system - without the detailed scan of the star , will I still be "the one who discovered it" regardless of someone else afterwards did the detailed scan?

Normal scan is the minimum is all you need to claim the discovery. But make sure you sell the data to be claimed.

Each Discovery Scanner has a different range, A Basic Scanners range is 500Lys, Intermediate Scanners range is 1000Lys and Advanced Scanners range will scan everything in the system. A Detailed Scanner only adds extra detail to the scan giving you more credits when you sell your exploration data.

However the Detailed scanner is an actual used piece of equipment, it isnt passive like the others, and you can charge it up regardless of being anywhere near the target you are scanning, you get a noise on completion and it says "Completed", even if you didnt actually scan it, which has led to my confusion. To be honest it would be nice if they made an obvious difference between the scan finishing, and the scan actually scanning something, or just dont allow it to scan nothing, or things too far away.

No, you got it backwards. It is the Discovery Scanner you charge and fire from a firegroup. Detailed Surface Scanner works automatically once you're close enough. As do the Discovery Scanners when you scan individual Astronomical Bodies.

And you get a circulating icon for scanning in your HUD that goes away (unless you're scanning a belt cluster - bug) once the scan is finished. Theres also a high-pitched "tingling" sound when scanning, with a definite end-"tingle" to notify you of a finished scan, accompanied by HUD message "Surface Scan completed" or "Detailed Surface Scan completed", depending on if you have Detailed Surface Scanner installed (and powered) or not.

The "fog-horn" sound of Discovery Scanners tell you tha you have "pinged" Astronomical Objects within the scanners range, and if any were found they will appear as Unexplored in your navigation tab (left side panel) and on HUD. Also, a message saying "X Astronomical Bodies found" appears on your HUD.

If you jump into a multiple star system the DS can scan them from several thousand LS away (once they are targeted), but again, it depends on the star being scanned.

Just noticed as i logged in and started using it, so thats that problem resolved. Other than that, anyone know when we are getting the Orrery system view?
