Detailed Surface Scanner confusion

I am here once again to plead for wisdom on this confusing, confusing game.

So it's been a while since I've gone through the chore of stocking up on basic materials on the planet, it was a pain, and then it got easier with the sites you could go to. Now in Odyssey it seems to be back like early engineering having to plod around a planet for miles for the odd outcrop or something for a measly 3 of something. I suspect I've got something wrong, but the Codex isn't much help.

So I've probed the planet and it's gone blue, there are a few different shades of blue, but I'm not sure if this is just due to rougher terrain or whether it actually means something (there is no key, why would there be?). From my reading, I understand now that the number of Geologicals is the number of different types, which seems to correlate with the number of filters available, but the filters don't seem to do anything.

No filter:

Now, I've flown round the planets a few times rotating the filters, and there seems to be zaroo change on the screen. What idiotic thing am I doing wrong which is blatantly obvious to everyone else, but utterly confusing to me?

You're in the unlucky situation that all three geologicals appear in the same area (this is unfortunately fairly common). I believe you want to look around elevated terrain, illustrated by the different shades of blue. Anyway, this thread explains it much better.

Yes it's very common that 3 types of geo appear in the same area, the shades as mentioned indicate underlying geography, mountains, basins etc. If the area is all blue turn the filters off by changing to combat HUD mode and look for areas of depressions and deep valleys, these are far more likely to have volcanic sites than mountains or large flat desert type plains. Also look for what look like pockmarked areas, these are often collection of small volcanic mounds where you can find volcanic sites.

But yes essentially, if it's all blue for every filter then it's everywhere, use the geological features to pick your landing site.

honestly i haven't foind many planets where most geo and bio don't occupy the same are. I just wish i could turn off all filters so that i could see the planets without them after scanning.

Biggest confusion is that it may look like a heat map with different shades, while it isn't. It's binary, showing no and maybe. And the _'maybe' is the next confusion when you think blue means 'yes' and you look and look and find nothing. Can be frustrating. Until you learn you need to look at the geography and colours to find the terrain you are likely to find whatever you're looking for. Which you can't make out while in discovery mode. SO you have to switch between combat and discovery modes to get your bearings while trying to maintain some orbit or approach to the planet.

While all of this may be awkward and could possibly be streamlined more, it does add a level of player skill to planetary scanning and resource collection that a clear to interpret heat map would not have. A heat map would be "Drop at bright spot, receive goodies."; possibly less compelling than going through all of the above.

Sometimes a single bio on a geologically active planet is fumerola, which by definition requires geologically active sites to exist, so of course it matches the geologically active filter, but other bio are often starkly different in the areas they highlight, just drop into a system with planets/moons with bio counts 6 or above and you will quickly see what I mean.

People don't read? The very post above;
no i did, I just didn't know what you meant by hud mode. considering combat and scanning are far more than hud modes. I had assumed you meant changing filters to change how it showed.

I know what you mean, my point was most planets have most of the geo and bio covering nearly the entire planet

There are two HUD modes, there have always been two HUD modes since the FSS was released, Combat and Analysis, when I say change to Combat HUD mode it can only mean a single thing, change to Combat HUD mode! And I clearly said "turn the filters off".
