Positional placement on the asteroid does not matter. What does matter is what kind of charge you place on what strength of fissure. If you target the fissures it will tell you the strength. When firing charges, hold down your fire button to increase the level of the charge.
As said before in this thread: Two high (max) charges on 2 low fissures will get you pretty close, if not immediately within the Optimal yield range (the two bars on the graph that are yellow with your HUD. There is even a little check-mark by it.) In order to get the BEST yield from any given asteroid you need to be within that band; either one bar or both, and not any higher or lower. You will know when you're too high when the warning mark appears above the check-mark. You can disable charges by going into the contacts panel I believe and selecting the fissure that has a charge that you want to disable.
As a general rule start with two high charges on low fissures. depending on how close the range is to your optimal band, either put a low charge on a high fissure, or a medium on a medium.
