Devs, we need an EDDB type utlity embedded in the ship`s computer...

For those who don`t know EDDB is Elite Dangerous Database. It will give you info on where most commodities are and what are the good trade routes. It has been extremely useful to me on long tourist missions where I get a guy wanting an obscure comodity and I can relatively easily detoiur to get it. Previously, I failed missions charging around the universe trying to find an obscure item or just gave up, making the customer mad.

Also it`s not perfect, if the info is old, items may no longer be where it indicates, which I like. So a mechanic where the info is sometimes incorrect would also add to the gameplay.

It`s really not a cheat in my view, but like some have siad, it`s more like a catalogue browser that you could get on the internet today or a magazine A-Z.

We should have something like this already embedded in the ships we use or as a module we can buy with ingame credits and attach.

Maybe you guys should get in touch with the guys who make EDDB?

Well if that`s the case maybe they can make the their version less accurate due to the distances in space and other factors? At least something that helps get us into the general area. I didn`t even want to use EDDB, but was desperate since I was failing every mission spending hours searching everywhere.

When they first started Kickstarter, many of the proposed ideas was exactly like this, a trade screen where you could see the price history of things etc along with various other QoL ideas. None of them ever made it off the drawing board.

Unfortunately my view is that because there are 3rd party solutions they feel they don't need to do anything. When they introduced the new journal, many people expected this to be a journal inside the ship not just for the 3rd party people. That was probably the most disappointing thing FDev have done, in my view at least. Don't get me wrong it's great they are supporting these sites / apps. I just wish there wasn't a need for them.

if they would make it less accurate, why would you use it? and not just shift+tab it to EDDB itself..

I expected this answer. I would use it. I prefer something that`s less accurate, not totally accurate. Reality is never perfectly accurate, ask any economist. Too many people turn their games into sterile spreadsheets rather than an immersive experience. In rpgs, when everyone else is getting obsessed over numbers of a weapon that does 4+5+10+50+ fire damage, etc, etc, I`d be like "Just give me a decent sword and point me to the enemy!" You as well as some others likely won`t get it. It`s just how I roll.

I think the OP's notion is a good one, but I really don't see Alt-Tabbing as much of a burden. It seems to me that what we do now, is more like what we'd actually be doing in the games reality. We would switch from viewing our ships status to the data we need. It all seems to be the same anyway.

With that, I wonder if FD aren't just giving these opportunities for people to find a feeling of ownership of the game environment when they create the 3 party helpers. What about all of those guys that create and maintain these sites. It gives the makers real agency when they create and share these sites. Why take that away now? I kind of like the population of gamer created sources. I'm in no rush to see the game swallow these up.

It`s even less of a burden to me since I have EDDB on my laptop next to my pc. That`s not the issue here. Although if it was embedded in the game itself that would be even more convenient. Alt-tabbing can play havoc with a pc and be hugely annoying if an incident happens while in space.

I would love to see in game versions of these tools, but limited to only stuff you'd found out your self. So it'll list engineer recipes, trade prices etc, but only if you've been there already.

haha,
yes, lets have some POLL to check if you want instant access to distant data or have to wait for it....
oh yes....

This would add depth of gameplay and help people to make money thus increasing the fun factor so no way FD would do it.

Lol, 'depth'.

What is in-game: Economic state and type, with commodities linked to both. Specific tradelines and intensity can be shown on the map.
What you think is 'depth': Go to arrow for big money.

Its okay you want easy, no-brain gameplay to see a variable go up fast. Its just a game, so if you find that to be enjoyable, fine. Just dont pretend it has anything to do with 'depth' when all you want is some app to tell you where to A-B grind.

Yup.
Something like this would be helpful.
Or some sort of browser, where we could use Inara, EDDB and Coriolis.

I'd wish they would at least bring back the intrasystem commodities pricing and magazine subscription offers that they had in FFE, able to be purchased enroute for a few credits after you've jumped into a system. (salty threads/posts could be featured on RIG issues [big grin] )
The main info & transaction screen could also lead to more gameplay instead of when it's currently only available when docked.

EDDB is so amazing that they literally could just link to it in-game, or if SUPER lazy just put a link to it on the loading page for new players.

I have always used tools like EDDB since I started since I just couldn't understand the in game trade tools.
I tried for a while, but when I was unable to interpret the data bought from stations correctly I gave in went to a 3rd party tool that predated EDDB a bit.
Even just support for a web browser inside your cockpit to use EDDB yourself would be enormously helpful and would add to the immersion significantly especially those that play in VR where tabbing out or using another screen is impractical.

Totally agree with OP. I hate having to Alt-Tab to keep playing the game. I think this is why I hate trading so much, because there are no good in-game tools for it. So you have to go outside the game constantly to check stuff, which makes me feel like I'm kinda cheating, or playing the game in a way that it is not intended to be played, and above all it breaks the pace so much. Same with the engineers. I actually don't dislike the whole engineers thing (the "grind" and so), on the contrary I rather like it, except for the fact that I have to be Alt-Tabbing constantly to check all the recipes. I really can't comprehend why we can not access all the recipes from our ship (the ones from the engineers we have unlocked), with the required materials and how many we have of each. It can't be hard to implement because such an information screen already exists (when you visit the engineer's base). It feels a bit half baked, to be honest.

I just wish the existing system where you can select and compare market data, which was clearly designed for this, would actually implemented.

All it needs to do is store the snapshot of data at the last system you were at and have the buyable data.
This would be the bare min for me to do trading - something I haven't done at all (playing since beta).

I think the issue might be the amount of data that would have to be stored on the servers if everyone had snapshots of market prices from every station they visited. Local only might be an option? OR maybe only store the last month's data?

It would be a LOT of data...
