Diamondback Explorer

Actually the DBX and the Asp are pretty similar in price once you start upgrading. 5D and 6D equipment is far superior to 4A and several Million CR cheaper for some reason.

I tend to think the same thing as well. Just that one cruising speed problem that triggers us, though.

It sounds like most of you were expecting the DBX to also be multi-purpose like the Asp. It's a pure exploration ship. Dump the utilities/weapons and lighten the modules, it has pretty much the same range as the Asp similarly hollowed out, and all for more than half the price. Although, it would be nice if a bigger fuel scoop could be fitted, but that's besides the point (and, really, 1m33s to refuel from empty isn't that bad, unless you suck at scooping). I prefer exploration in this than the Asp, despite it being slower in normal space.

The cockpit looks better too. The Asp's makes it feel like I'm sitting in a glass bubble, totally vulnerable.

… Theoretically you could have run a large beam and two medium cannons and been a threat to the vulture, …

The problem isn't the capacitor or the available energy. The problem is the maneuverablity of the Vulture. You will have a very hard time trying to hit that thing. It's possible against NPCs, it should be impossible against players. And to make it more "fun" the Vulture can simply boost away. Flying backwards while firing gimbaled cannons and using SCB after SCB is probably not an option as the shields are weak.

BTW: I use 3 beam lasers with my DBX (fixed beams to make it more interesting). It turns fighting into a constant pip juggling. By the time I get the target in front of my weapons the capacitor is full again. Fighting with this set up against NPC Elite Cobras or Imp Couriers is interesting. But I'm not going to test this set up against CMDRs…

It does exactly what it says on the tin, "Explorer". I am about 6000LY away from Sol and loving it. Doing splash and dash I can get between 700-800LY before I need to stop and do a complete fill on the tank. It cost way less than a tricked out Asp (I sold mine).
So far no complaints. If you need a cheap multi-role ship then the Cobra might be a better option for you.

I've had no issues with the DBX. It's a damned good exploration ship for the price point. 34ly max jump range vs. the asp's slightly longer (~1-2ly). That's just fine. I don't see why people are complaining. I'd much rather see it be given a longer jump range than the asp to make it a dedicated explorer but it's not a requirement.

People are complaining because the DBX is both bad at fast travel (undersized scoop), and bad at scanning (slow supercruise turning speed). Jump range aside, those are literally the only stats that matter for exploration. If you don't care about those, might as well use a type 9 with a class 3 scoop to explore.

That said, the DBS is really good at naval ascension missions.
