Ships Diamondback: I must have missed something?

No it doesn't?

The DBS is a pure fighter with a semi-decent jump range. Which is easy for non-explorers to confuse with an explorer ship. In any case, it looks like there might be an actual DB Explorer variant ghosting through the system in the form of NPCs without schematics on the contacts hud in BETA 6. Hopefully portents of exciting things to come ;)

Yes, I did see that. That was quite interesting. Perhaps the only thing FD could do immediately to address the "wailing and gnashing of teeth" on the forums was to change the wording in the UI. But a ship redesign takes a bit longer, as it involves design team meetings, etc.

A heavier duty explorer version of the DB would be great! I would certainly give it a spin, because I am a big fan of supercruise turning speed in explorer ships, and I find the asp is a bit sluggish.

I think many people misunderstood the meaning of "Combat explorer"

almost everybody assumed it meant "an exploration vessel that is proficient in combat roles"

however there is an alternative meaning, that i think better describes the ship:

"seeker of combat"

Edit:
meaning that instead of serving as an explorer of unknown worlds, it is meant to explore and patrol a region of space for hostile activity and engage the hostiles if needed. Even across multiple systems.

Hence the name change to diamondback SCOUT

I think that a lot of people really got hung up on on the explorer part of the original name of the ship under the assumption that they were getting a ship that was cheaper than the Asp and able to perform similarly. As others have pointed out, the Asp when properly outfitted is a more capable ship for combat and exploring than the DBS is, and definitely has better range. Once the ship dropped, it really seemed like it needs to function in a wing with other ships (with the center piece being a Python or Anaconda) patrolling systems or a sector for a combat scout type of role, or out alone charting systems in nearby systems of inhabited space. I'd think that a wing of 2 DBS's, an Asp/FDL/Clipper, and a Python/Anaconda/FDL seems like a pretty decent build for a hunter/killer wing. In fact, I'm already imagining the next CG blockades to have a mix of this type of setup interdicting people.

edit: I wrote this before I saw the announcement was made that there are going to be two variants.

The new variant is heavier than the scout, but hopefully will have a better turning speed than the Asp ;)

More sluggish than the asp, yes? 5 vs 6.

I did some rough math, the DBE travels maybe 14-15% slower than the type 6. Probably worth using if you scan a lot and can't afford the asp yet. Or you don't care about speed and like the look of it.

I like the look of both of the DBs, by the way.

The Type 6 can reach 406 with boost, while jumping 28 LY and sporting a monster fuel scoop. So it's actually quite a fast little ship. Used one on my last trip out and even it felt painfully slow to reach my target compared to the Asp. Can't imagine what a DBE or a DBS would be like!!
