Ships Diamondback: I must have missed something?

if this ship really can't fit 2 scanners, scoop, and an afmu, it's a non-starter as an explorer ship. Really, how could they overlook this?

It is not an Explorer.

FD realized their mistake and renamed it to the Diamondback Scout. In other words, it's a recon vessel. Seek, identify and run like your ass is on fire, awaiting reinforcements. Alternatively seek, identify and get your ass set alight.

You choose.

It's generally a better fighter and explorer than the Cobra.

You don't need an AFMU to explore, if you are remotely careful. I'm averaging about 1% subsystem damage per 400-500 systems/jumps while exploring, and less hull damage.

I'd rather love to see it stay with c3s, but have the c2 split into 2x c1 to fit exploration scanners, scoop and shield, as you posted as bare minimum.
So 3xc3 2xc1, is a good choice.
I don't feel like it really needs stronger shields,
the subsystems in general need tweaking to take less damage while flying a more heavily armored ship.
Haven't flown anything this stylish since the eagle.

I agree with this. Its not essential for me, but splitting the 2 slot into two 1 slots makes sense to me. Moreover, the hull strength is excellent in the DiamondBack, so I agree the shield strength balances that for me.

ahh. ok, I stand corrected. Too bad, a combat explorer that cost less thatn $300 million would be nice.

Pretty much this, both explorer and fighter retrofits look better than the good ol' Cobra. On paper at least.

seeing as it's not an explorer, my comment is misplaced. I've been corrected that it is a combat *scout*. So, the fact that it can't hold 2 scanners, scoop, and afmu is really irrelevant.

It has good explorer stats and that's what I intend to use it for ;)

Actually the ship is what you fit it to handle.
It won't compete with an ASP exploring the deep, but still can be a stylish ride.

I originally thought of the ship as a scout/troop transport.
It just looks like a Valkyrie or a Blackhawk.
I wish for more specialist modules adding to the "paths" you take,
like combining exploration and combat into this ship more by adding a specialist
sensor array.
So you can scout ahead of your buddies while in SC,
or ven be able to deploy sensor drones in SC to scout troop movements in hostile areas,
while staying covert.

The DB just feels so powerful, i can't wait for the update to go live.

Disclaimer: I don't have beta access so my only knowledge comes from playing around with configs on ED Shipyard!

I can't spot any upsides to the Diamondback over the Cobra - but I am looking to be educated on the obvious something I've missed!

1. The base ship costs more than the Cobra.

2. Trading - the Cobra can carry a significant amount more cargo

3. Combat - the Diamondback seems to be more agile with the same (better placed?) hardpoints, but has can't fit as high a rated shield.

4. Exploring - Diamondback has slightly more jump range, but can't fit both scanners, fuel scoop and AFMU, so (for me) is not viable for exploring.

So other than combat (and that seems debatable) the DB is outclassed on the other roles, so not mulit-purpose and it's more expensive. If combat is it's only virtue get a Viper or Eagle?

Again, I accept I've probably missed something so I'm not having a moan just keen to know what it is I've missed!

You haven't missed anything. She is a less flexible cobra that is a little better in a fight. If you've earned a few million by participating in a community goal, then you can just skip her entirely without a second thought.

I made some comparison for trading, RES hunting, RES hunting with shield boost, and exploring.

Trading: It got significantly less capacity and more expensive than cobra. So no good
RES Hunting: It start out as cheaper with less shield strength, but once boosted with shield boost it is better than Cobra
Explorer: Cheaper, slightly more jump range seem better choice for exploration for starter.

Thoughts?

...So other than combat (and that seems debatable) the DB is outclassed on the other roles, ...?

This is the key for me, and it isn't debatable from my point of view. The Cobra is gimped by its undermounted small hardpoints which are set too far back. If they had been put on the upper surface of the hull, then the Diamondback would have little use to me. I suppose it would still trump the Cobra in cockpi visibility, but I could live with that.

So as it is, I'll be trying the Diamondback as a RES toy and then keeping the Cobra for general purpose missions and trading.

I'd choose the Diamondback over the Cobra just because I can't stand the retro look of the Cobra. I flew it for an afternoon and I got out of that thing as soon as I could. I felt like the NPCs in the stations were laughing at me every time I docked. I'm all for having it in there for folks who played the original, but ickkkk not for me.

The Agility of the DB is 8, that is outdated data on the website.
With a complete combat equip your boost speed is at about 412 m/s (with military composite)!
I'd favor a DB over a Cobra for exploration and combat.
Piracy is a different call, since the DB has virtually no cargo-cap.

Combat Diamondback with military composite and everything except Life Support on Grade A.
No Shield Cells!

It's a good choice if that's all that FDev are willing to do, and thus far it appears they've shown no willingness to consider a change. It's effectively a moot point a far as we're aware.

That said, having a C4 would buff the shields, unless they change the shield coefficient or something to compensate.

What's more at issue here is that the Diamondback is a class 4 ship (as evidenced by its major fixed modules being class 4) without any class 4 internals. It's also, as others have pointed out(ziljan, puca, over on the ships forum), the only ship in the game that doesn't have a module slot that fits its FSD size, thus the scoop is at an inherent disadvantage. It doesn't bother me personally, as I likely wouldn't have fit a C4 scoop anyway. But someone looking for a scout might lean more toward the exploration aspect and fit a larger scoop over a larger shield.

That option was never put into play at all though, so again, moot point. The ship will see use, and it will likely be a key player for many a Commander working their way through the ranks, especially those going into combat roles. It's a nice sidegrade to a Viper, and doesn't exhibit some of that ship's issues (power, primarily). For its price tag though, I fully believe it requires too much compromise.

As I said, it's SO close to being a really great ship, and not merely a stepping stone to something larger. I just simply don't understand the decision making behind this ship.
