Difficult to explain- Poor CV1 image quality-Any suggestions.

The image quality in my oculus rift cv1 is very poor quality. For months I have been trying to improve the image quality, without success.
When I use virtual desktop with the galaxy wallpaper, the image is fantastic in both lenses, with both eyes open. If I close my left eye, and then my right eye, both images are identical and perfect.
I then open elite dangerous and the image is terrible, especially looking into the centre of the galaxy . The left eye (right eye closed) is perfect. The right eye (left eye closed) is horrible,
The right eye (left eye closed) looks like I have gamma set to 100%. In game I have gamma set to 0%. With both eyes open it looks like gamma is set to +50%

This error only occurs with elite dangerous. It's not my eye sight because virtual desktop wallpaper and other dark games are brilliant.

I have raised a ticket with ED support, because I believe this is an issue with Elite, and not my CV1.

Any suggestions would be greatly received.

I have the exact same problem. the only reason I hesitate to open a complaint with Oculus is because some games/apps work as they should. things seem to have taken a nose dive in either the 2.2 release or the latest Oculus home update. the banding in Elite is horrible now but only under certain lighting conditions.

Hi Beavis. Had a reply to my ticket. They say never came across this issue before and have asked me to take pics of the left and right lenses showing the difference. Away from home until Monday. Will try to take pics next week and hope they show the error. I will post my pics if they replicate my problem.

Here are the images I posted to support. I apologise for the very poor quality of the images, but there is a noticeable difference between the left and right lenses in ED

Both virtual desktop images look OK, so it may be more to do with ED than oculus.

Are those screenshots from the 2.1 version of ED, or the 2.2 beta?

I'm using a CV1 on 2.1 and it looks fine for me. Although 2.2 beta I can't seem to launch without a CTD so can't test that.

I remember ages ago during pre-release around the 2014 Beta testing time, FD managed to release a version that had different shading for each eye and that's pretty much what you see now. So it is possible for ED to produce what you're seeing with differences for each eye, but that was a bug everyone who used VR had before it was patched out. However, unless you're using 2.2 beta (because I can't verify that at the moment) 2.1 is okay for me.

Hi dextrovix, The images are taken from 2.1, connected to the HDMI port of my 1080founders edition. I have also tried connecting with a display port adapter, without improvement.

Update. Bottom line is that Oculus have asked me to return my CV1, and they will provide me a new one.

Initially I thought that because this fault only occured in ED, the problem lay with Frontier. Frontier support were very hopeful. After giving them plenty of time to investigate all the logs I sent them, they concluded that the fault was with my CV1.

I then moved to Oculus for help. Again very accomodating. They asked for all my log files, and from the zip file I sent them, they concluded that my CV1 was faulty. I don't know the full forensic details.

I returned my CV1 on the 14th, and expect to receive the new headset within 15 days.

So, now I will be playing in 2D/4K, so not to much of a step back.

Thanks for all your suggestions. I will update this thread after I have tested my new HMD. Fingers crossed that it's perfect.

I think you got the same problem as me: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/294003-Does-anyone-have-a-flawless-Oculus-Rift

Could you take a photo of the test picture from the thread I linked in my thread? From each display?

Sorry lemny. I returned my rift to Oculus several days ago, so cannot take the images you asked for. It arrived in Holland today, and they have confirmed they are sending me a new HMD. I hope this unit works perfectly. Fingers crossed.

that is great news! I put in a ticket with oculus as well and they asked for pictures too.. I'm going to get them here in a minute and email them to oculus, hopefully hearing that I will receive a new headset :).

well the picture taking has proven to be quite frustrating..I'm having lots of trouble capturing the defect with my phone :(. guess I'll contact oculus again and ask what i should do.

I have the same problem - and i think Elite shows up this defect more than most stuff due to the high contrast scenes it displays. My right eye is posterized in a really weird subtle way and when combined with the left it really is a bit odd and distracting in certain scenes. It kinda makes you slightly boss eyed sometimes.

Gonna have to get back to Oculus and see about the replacement i think. There has def been a few reports of mismatched screens/eyes elsewhere on the web.

Take a look at mine... maybe they catch your problem.

And try the test picture from this thread:

It captures the issue perfect.

Final update: Good news. I returned my rift to Oculus on 16th Oct. Yesterday I received a brand new CV1.

It is perfect. The view in left and right eye is exactly the same. For the first time I am experiencing ED in all it's glory.

Thanks for all your input.

There is no need to tape the rift on the table. I managed it to take the pictures by holding the rift and covering the sensor with my thumb. And you need to take it in the dark, because of the reflections.

It's very important to me.
