As a premium beta (sort of) veteran, (who still has trouble fighting damn eagles), I still remember the massacres at Freeport back when we were all crammed into a tiny wee bubble and anacondas were only a million credits or thereabouts. Looking out of the letterbox and sniffing the space air and seeing anacondas and vipers sitting there trying to look innocent.
“What me? Blow you up the second you come out? Not me, nonono. What hard points? Oh, THESE hard points? Just letting them dry out because they’ve just been painted. Honest”.
I’ve since stayed partly in solo or in group play, but as most of the group I joined seem to be over the pond and I’ve not found a UK group I thought, “Sod it, I’ve got insurance” and went on open play last week, (expecting to be dead in seconds at the hands of a venomous 11 year old as happened in my brief venture into counter-strike back in the day), in a type 6, Cobra and lately an Asp, mostly trading. Not rares, I've not got the patience for rares).
And it’s been great. Admittedly, I’m quite savvy and keep an eye on my scanner to see just who’s behind my 3-9 line. After hours in the inky void trading without seeing a soul on Monday night I saw another commander at an outpost in a cobra. I was waiting to dock and he was taking up the only available pad so I waited and flashed my lights at him. He took off and there was a “moment” that was electric. Like when dogs meet, (no not the bum sniffing), and they either start getting aggressive or become friendly. Maybe if I’d been in a sidey he may have attacked, but I guess an asp looks a bit more meaningful when its 30ft away from you. I said “hi” and we had a little text chat about life on the frontier and we went on our way.
It was pretty damn cool actually. I’ve played online games for years and usually you’re on the red or the blue team and that’s that. In elite, it can be different.
