Disable HUD also in night vision mode when canopy is broken

Many, many players say that one of their most terrifying experiences playing the game is when their canopy breaks, and they have to get to a space port before oxygen runs out. The ambience and attention to detail is extraordinary. There's also an amazing detail about it: When your canopy is broken, you don't have HUD graphics on the broken parts (which really drives home that, indeed, the HUD is projected onto the canopy).

Which, in turn, means that you don't have any HUD graphics right in front of you and you have to rely on your dashboard instruments to get to the station (nav-compass, distance reading...) This was actually one of the coolest experiences I had when was in that situation: Suddenly I couldn't rely on the HUD and had to navigate with the dashboard instruments only. A really thrilling and cool experience.

When I recounted this cool experience later at a discord server, someone just had to go and ruin it... by telling me that if you turn on night vision, the HUD reappears.

That honestly ruins that part of the experience. If you know that feature, even if you didn't want to use it, it's way too tempting.

I don't know if the HUD reappearing when night vision is on is an oversight or intentional design, but I would wish it was removed. It just adds to the experience and the thrill of trying to get to a space port in a panic when you have a broken canopy. Once you know the feature exists, it just ruins the entire experience.

Some of the most fun and exciting experiences I have had in ED was before night vision was a thing. Exploring the night side of planets when they were completely black and flying down using instruments only was a nerve wracking adventure sometimes, oh well, night vision ruined a lot of fun!

Also, the night vision currently is applied to your cmdr as well, but not the inside of the ship - what's up with that? Someone needs to decide whether the night vision is on the canopy or your eyes.

It's an unfortunate oversight indeed.
The navigation without HUD is very thrilling, especially when facing Thargoid vessels!
I normally choose not to activate NV when the canopy breaks, and just pretend it's broken.

I know, it's just a workaround, but works well enough for me.

So you thought you'd spoil it for others, rather than just bug reporting it. How thoughtful.
I haven’t experienced the effect myself but had read about it in one of the other forums before the OP’s suggestion so they are not to blame for spoiling things for others.

My reaction when I heard of it was that well with the canopy broken I am wearing a helmet so why wouldn’t night vision still work but then realised that the ships HUD being visible needed much more handwaving, then I decided to not worry about it until I lost enough of my canopy again to be an issue.

But it does sound a bit of an exploit.

As a point of interest in this issue, since your helmet automatically pops into place when the canopy is broken surely there is no reason why the helmet's "HUD" couldn't display the navigation information. Just another example of the on-foot development not integrating with the shipborne game.

Similarly, why does the emergency life-support of the ship take precedence over the air supply of whatever suit you are wearing?
Because looking at the seats there is no room for your backpack.

Of course it’s not, that is down to the ships HUD operating system is incompatible with that of the suits helmet.
It's not incompatibility. The API is there and everyone can technically use it, but at the cost of 50000 credits per 1000 calls plus technology, certificatiin and licensing fees neither Remlock, Supratech nor Manticore have bothered to implement it😉 All attempts at reverse-engineering and hacking it have been met with DFMCA (Digital Fourth Millennium Copyright Act) takedowns, C&D letters and expensive lawsuits.

I'm going to pretend this isn't true and will continue to enjoy the challenge of finding my target on what remains of my shattered cockpit window glass.

And that message also goes out to my Lave Radio co-hosts @psykit, @Phoenix_Dfire and @EidLeWeise who were so delighted to shout out this ahem feature a couple of weeks back! ;)

Given how much support there is for changing this, I wonder if it would be worth doing an outright bug report.
It would get my vote. And "fixing" something that's given people a workaround for a deliberate inconvenience isn't unprecedented either. For a while the doors to Thargoid bases opened without the need to carry a probe or sensor and that got reported and fixed.

I’ve added the issue report to the bugs thread and I’ll add my confirmations to the report later - hopefully this is something that can be fixed but it looks to me like NV is an overlay or shader on the entire screen. In VR the NV effect (the scan lines and pulse wave) is attached to the player’s head and can be tilted by moving your head.

Edit: can anyone confirm that the HUD comes back if your suit does not have a night vision upgrade?
Edit2: nvm - I’ve done a VR check; external HUD elements (POIs etc) disappear after moving my head through the cockpit glass but remain if ship night vision is switched on. I’ve no NV suit upgrade.
