Disable your Monitors to Increase DK2 Performance

On a purely anecdotal level - yes. It fixed all the juddering & stuttering for me.

It makes sense, as the card driving two monitors rather than 4 (even if the other two aren't doing very much, they're still there - consuming VRAM and so on) will naturally lead to better performance.

With the Rift, every frame counts... at least on low-to-mid range systems like mine. :)

Interesting and logical both at the same time!
Thanks for your reply...will give it a go this evening.

Why is it with OR / ED i seem to spend more time fine tuning gfx, turning stuff off, editing registry than actually playing the game??
(all part of the fun I suppose)

You answered your own question. ;)

Answer: It's a dev kit. You're meant to tinker & fiddle & fine tune. :p

I didn't know you could get decent rift performance with an HD7870. What are your quality settings? Do you manage to get 75 fps most of the time? I've got one 7870, could be interesting to know if I could play in the rift with just a second one.

I really wouldn't recommend it. If I had the choice again, I would go for a 780Ti or a single 970 or 980. However, I can get reasonable performance out of my system... upgrading the CPU to an FX8350, overclocking it to 4.4Ghz and disabling the two side monitors made the difference for me. I also turn everything else off, virus checker, Steam, any servers I have running etc before starting the game. I also have everything turned down to Low in the game - although the Oculus slider remains full. With that, I can just get 75hz consistently in the game.

But if you have a couple of hundred quid to lay down on a new Gfx card, I would seriously think about replacing rather than adding another 7870. Crossfire really doesn't add as much as you'd think, and practically nothing for VR.

I'm a first time user of the game so I can't really say if it improved framerates, but when I first tried the game yesterday, low persistence was disabled and the sky had an ugly greenish tint in some places. Now after disabling my 2 monitors, it runs smooth. I was running the Rift in Extended mode as Primary and I had 2 external monitors set to 60Hz. I've run over a 100 demos this way, and this is the first time I've had issues with low persistence being turned off.

I tried this and I personally didn't felt much difference in my eyes, maybe because I only have one card gtx970. Even supersampling introduces slight judder for my machine. So my best setting for smooth play is to set 1920x1080. Shadow to low, bloom off, blur off, AA off, textures to medium and reflections to low.
Another thing that happens with my configuration when my computer switches the monitor off is, I loose the sound because i have the sound going from the hdmi port to my sound system.

Set the IPD setting accordingly in the config file under C:\Users\xxxx\AppData\Local\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous\Options\Graphics.. Change the <IPDAmount>0.062000</IPDAmount>.. My IPD is 6.2, hence the 0.062000.. You have to change it to your real life IPD.. This will solve a lot of problems with green tint etc.. It will also make the graphic crystal clear, as the DK2 will now render the picture correctly to your eyes.

It is always needed ? The game do not take the ipd set from the oculus config tool ?

Reports vary! I've check mine and its different between the two. I've always just used the config tool.
On a side note after the latest Rift update and wider FOV I had to recalibrate my IPD and its wrong in the game AppData file, Rift feels fine.

In my experience, this value is ignored for DK2 and the value is taken from the IPD config tool directly.

I've set it to some silly values, and the picture appears just the same.

Just to confirm what has already been stated above. I did a little experiment in station with main monitor disabled. Super sample at 1440 with oculus quality at max and started turning things up until the judder appeared when looking around (fps drop below 75) and then backed things down until all looking nice and smooth.

Did a reboot enabled main monitor which is a 120hz screen and went back in to the station and it was terrible judder. Disabled main monitor again and all good. So there it is 100% worth disabling the main screen even though it's a PITA.

i wonder if it's possible to use a 2nd gpu card for desktop, will be trying that this weekend as I have some spares.
