Disadvantages of NOT winging up?

When my friends and I go bounty hunting we wing up, for the traditional reasons. Everything is that little bit easier with the HUD elements and ability to follow through jumps.

But I'm a bit disillusioned with the hefty XP split. They have fighters and in the end I have fun, make bank but rank advances in a pitiful manner as a result.

If we do everything the same, but choose not to establish a wing, will we each get full XP for kills we all tagged like if playing alongside NPCs in high RES? I suspect the answer is no? What other disadvantages would there be?

If it reverts to 'last volley wins' then it's a non-starter.

Yes. If you're not in the wing, you will not share bounties. Whoever hits the target last gets the bounty. And XP.
So even if you are sharing kills equally (as friends should), you will each get only half the XP, anyway. AND only half the money.

In other words, XP-wise it doesn't matter if you wing up or not, money-wise, winging up will earn you more.

Just what Chris said: just wing up. The advantages are worth it.

As a sidenote: why bother about the XP? You can kill much faster in a wing. This more than compensates for the split. And in the end, there's really not much the XP actually matters for, anyway. Yes, one or another engineer unlock is hidden behind it, but it's really not that bad. And the higher speed of killing really means that you're not at a disadvantage when winging up.

Thanks. All I care about anymore is the XP. In a wing, with say four ships and three fighters I am getting 1/7 of the XP. Isn't that how it works?

So to be sure, if two friends don't wing, and each one lays in to the target until it explodes, the game will award the one it determines to have hit the target last the full bounty and XP? The other one gets nothing?

Wingmates do receive full bounty (money) for sharing kills. But XP is split, or this is how it seems to work to me.

And those are? HUD info and easier navigation?

It does not, by quite a margin. If you have three or four pilots and couple of fighters it is far slower to gain XP than just doing it solo. I am bothering with XP for combat rank.

My take on how it works is based on info in this thread

You kill an enemy alone, you get 100% of the XP.
You kill an enemy with a crew member, you get 50% and the crew member gets 50%.
You kill an enemy with 2 crew members, that's 33.3% each.
If you kill an enemy with 2 crew members and 1 wing mate, 25% each.
If you kill an enemy with 2 crew members and 1 wing mate who also has 2 crew members, that's then a 6-way split of the XP.

Makes no sense not to team up. Let the team deal with the stupid bulletsponges and leech the easy creds and XP. I wouldn't get any kills with my peashooters anyway while the rest blast away with all the buffed equipment.

I'd just like to address the last point which is a bit misleading.
The way you laid it out tells me that you don't fully understand that and think that the XP is divided by the number of both human and NPC pilots combined which is not quite true.
If you have two ships in the wing, they both get 50% of XP.
So if you are alone and your wingmate has two NPC pilots, you WON'T each get 25% of XP. Rather you get your 50% and your friend's other 50% is then split in thirds to award him and his crew.
So having or not having NPC pilots is detremental or beneficial only to their employer, not the whole wing.

I must try winging up with someone at some point, still not done it/don’t know how/billy no mates... 😢

I’d just be happy you have someone to play with op! 😂

If that's true that's reassuring as I am the only one without a minion :)

For what it's worth, the breakdown is (supposedly) from Fdev, not my take.

My anecdotal evidence is that despite killing ships far faster in a wing with my friends, my rank increase is much slower than simply killing less ships on my own. I don't want to stop flying with friends, just looking to gain XP at the fastest possible rate while doing so.

Despite the chance of sounding like a moron...
The only experience that really counts is the fun you're having and skills you're learning. Yes, it's kind of nice to have that high rank combat tag under your name, but honestly, beyond that, it really doesn't mean anything.
So take it easy. If you enjoy flying with mates, fly with mates. If you need the Founders World permit, you can do it by exploration in two or three days but other than that, there's no race. :)

If you're playing in the evenings (GMT), you can send me an invite. I'm planning to return to my main account and will be up for anything.
You can also join a player group or a Power (and engage on reddit) to gain peeps to fly with.

It's just combat rank I need Chris. I appreciate the sentiment, and always credit you when you advise others to 'stop the grind'

But combat rank is a slog, and I see nothing wrong with attempting to gain it as fast as I can.

Triple Elite has been a goal of mine since day one, and it's in sight now.

Yeah Chris! Totally up for that! 👍
I usually get on for a few hours after my son relinquishes Fortnite. 😩

I’m just a few kills from becoming dangerous, then the real grind begins.
I think compromised nav beacons are still the best place to go for combat ranking, take an OP ship and get to work.
Alternatively use an anarchy nav beacon, and just kill everything in sight... 😈

In that case, more important than being or not being in a wing is to pay attention to the enemy ranks. If you want full XP, be sure to only fight enemies with higher rank than yours!

Yeah, just the Deadly level takes as much as all that which came before, or something like that.

Winging is a lot of fun. My mates all have healing beams since they fly Vettes and use more fire than maneuver :) Take Chris up on the offer. He's the knowledgable, helpful sort. On the forum anyway. Could be a grouch in person :D

I'll be showing up tonight in my newly-engineered Courier. Zoom zoom. That means I won't do much damage, but I intend to just boost around them a lot.

So... if I am reading and understanding this right....

1) If you want to rank towards Elite in combat... Don't be in a wing! (Combat Rank)
2) If you are doing it for money, it will be faster in a wing! (BGS)
3) If you are doing CZ, being in a wing is more efficient than being alone (BGS).

Did I make the correct connections here?
