Discovery Scanner "HONK"

They shoot you dead for spending 30 seconds in the bay doors. What do you think they'd REALLY do if you blinded their instruments...?

hey, we should get them to add that. Using D-scanner near a starbase instantly makes it go hostile...

I'm actually kind of for this :)

You're letting off a gigantic pulse that reflects back all the stellar objects in the system. This must be a hyperspace thing for it to make sense (in Elite: Legacy it's mentioned that there are several kinds of comms - laser for direct ship to ship, and hyperspace for superluminal distances, so a hyperspace ping seems to fit in with that).

That cannot be good for the station's systems if you let one off nearby. And it would be kind of hilarious to suddenly get attacked for doing it... I'd certainly find it funny.

Though the inevitable tidal wave of complaints will probably mean it's never implemented, heheh.

It's a good point you have there though - since it does take time to fire the DS, it can't really be done 'by accident'.
Elite being the way it is - a station would likely blast you to bits for setting one off so close to them.

I love the Honk so much I have it as my ring tone. Gets me some strange looks from people but so far no-one has admitted to knowing what it is... I guess ED is not played by many scousers!

They should sync the volume with the amount of objects it found. Could be fun when someone scans a system with 108 objects.

Can anyone teach me how to hack into the audio files and replace it with "Oola" :) ?

Like as in a breathy Ooh La la? Or what were you thinking of?

I could do without the honk too though to be honest - it's a comedy soundeffect that should have been replaced on release. I'd like it if there was some kind of scanner flash on using the discovery scanners, like the broadcast active ping disrupted the scanner sensors, and a related big flash in SC visible to other ships for the whole discovery scanner range.
