Erm... *thinks hard* ...depends what you are building your ship for.
Dirty drives offer big benefits (more thrust, better pitch/yaw/roll) but come with big downsides (more heat, more mass).....so good for combat ships
Clean drives have smaller benefits but come with beneficial side effects (more heat efficient, better optimal mass)....so good for explorers.
My conda has G5 clean drive upgrade which gave it a little more FSD range, little improvement in handling, excellent heat efficiency (fuel scooping is no problem)
I would always go for dirty drives unless your ship suffers from heat issues. The benefits of the dirty drives are quite good for some ships, my vette can now go over 300m/s and my clipper could get to 501m/s and that was only with relatively good G3 rolls.
Im not sure about clean drives but with G3 dirty drive D thrusters on a cutter it was more maneuverable and faster than the 160m A rated thrusters.
I have dirty on all my ships and haven't overheat issues at all with pulses and multicannons. So i am cold and very maneuverable.Clean drives for me. Give it enough tries and you eventually get better than dirty drives while staying cool.
Also has anyone else noticed the one of the secondary effects to the low emission powerplant could give you even more power.
My federal corvette have 38 power and runs at 22% and boosts at 310 with grade 3 clean drives. Its good to be cold.
I will always go for Dirty Drives unless my ship had massive overheating issues. Love the huge performanceboost that give DD grade 5 to your ship. Cannot see the usefulness of Clean Drives.
In combat I go for an all-multicannon-build, so no heat issues here. For exploration I always try to take the biggest Scoop as possible, so no need to get too close to a star.
Why should I just take the energydrink? There are steroids available!
I think the weight of your ship should be taken into account dirty drives lowers the optimal hull which in my heavy python it pretty much counter the optimal multiply since my optimal hull is lower. The better my optimal hull the better my ship handles dirty just gives me a big speed boost only. My current clean let's be boost at 360 combat build and let's me maneuver on par with an fdl with clean drivesI will always go for Dirty Drives unless my ship had massive overheating issues. I actually think weight is more important than heat when it comes to choosing between this 2
