I will answer with a video. This was my experience from the dying hours of Beta 6. Extremely dangerous......but I just managed to scrape through. In 2.0, I'd still have all my hull intact! This was a *proper* challenge, & I love it. As others have said, maybe slightly reduce the number of Elite NPC's, but that is about it!

Keep saying "git gud" because the game will not bring in more casual players if the AI keeps getting harder and harder. So you hardcore players think "oh well?
Haven't you notice there is no subscription to the game? This game needs new players if it wants to see the end of the 10 year plan. There is a reason why games have end game content and most of the time it's insanely hard, but hardcore gamers love that and get there fill. And casual gamers stay away from that. But if the base AI is ridiculously hard then casual gamers will go away.

Look I'm all for adding a little more difficulty but this is asinine. I don't know if the whole game is like this now or what just happened was not intended.
Checking out the update and notice there's now a large gimbaled beam. So I'm like heck yeah let's check this baby out! Installed it and headed out to a Nav Beacon. As soon as I dropped into the Nav Beacon I get attacked by THREE ships, they are all wanted and all but ? I'm alleged to Empire, it's an Empire system and I'm not wanted or anything. But yet right when I drop in I get attacked? I'm in a Conda and these are Cobras and I can't even get them in front of me anymore. They knock out my shields and start ripping into my hull in matter of seconds.
If this is intended then I feel sorry for new players because this is really off putting. Not all of us are God's at combat or good at using FA off. In my opinion I do not like this change. I could see it like this at a HAZRES but a g Nav Beacon? In a system I'm alleged to?

Cheers mods now I have to trawl through tonnes of crap to get concise info......   .

I'm concerned about the Ai reports, I realise the truth is somewhere in between the two camps of "the Ai is awesome now" and "the Ai is too hard now". Not got the time to totally read all the comments but I require clarification on a couple of things to assuage my fears:

If I mainly stay in hi sec areas the chances of a high rank Ai is reduced? Or the help from authorities arrives quicker and in more force?

If I pick low rank missions the Ai is scaled to that choice so I can avoid higher level Ai at MY choice.

I fully realise some are loving the Ai but if it's not scaled properly to player skill base then I'll probably be quitting Elite and off to NMS, the door won't hit me on the the butt on the way out (thanks Hodor!). If it is scaled to the point the player base has control over the challenge then I'll be relieved and staying.

Just running delivery missions last night, in a A-rated Python, I spent more in repairs than I gained in mission rewards. While I wasn't killed, the risk/reward ratio for even simple activities is now completely out of whack.

I have no problem with a stronger AI in CZs, haz RES etc, but the idea that you have to be a highly competent combat pilot (in a combat focused ship) to even consider leaving port is frankly, daft.

Was it a normal nav beacon or a compromised one? Did you have any cargo on board? Are you pledged in powerplay? Do you have a hostile reputation with that faction? I've never been attacked on sight by pirates if my hold was empty or unless I        off their faction too much. That shouldn't normally happen. Compromised nav beacon is the HazRes of nav beacons though, if it was one then all bets are off.

Basically, a loud minority of incompetent pilots are here to gush about it. And a group of sadists like myself are here with popcorn. The player base has a handle on it.

Ofcourse you cant get them in your sights much, they are much more agile cause you are flying a whale. Get a proper combat ship or outfit your conda better, but dont try to dogfight in a conda.

You dont have to be God at combat, you do have to use your brains a tiny bit now and accept you cant automatically do whatever random approach that worked in 2.0.

Yes, mommy... ahem, auntie... :p

Moved from a closed thread:

First of all, I was quite suspicious of the danger posed by the new AI and unparked my Clipper with a bit of concern. Equipped (and needed!) point defense and large multi cannons. Went to a Navigation Beacon to test and especially hoping to find some material. I was in Wolf 47 and encountered quite a mix of NPCs, from Mostly Harmless to Deadly (I am "Dangerous").

First off, I was somewhat handicapped by not having my usual X-52 Pro setup available (broken again, replaced under warranty, but parcel will take another 5 days to arrive), so I am playing with an older Saitek Cyborg Evo joystick - unfamiliar to me and no good throttle. But still, I did not find the AI too hard, if somewhat challenging. Would have been quite a bit easier for me with my HOTAS. Only real hairy moment was against a dangerous FGS with no assistance by Security, that cost me two SCBs.

I flew out with a ton of materials, a million in bounty vouchers and 100% hull. I would not consider myself a particularly good combat pilot, but I have a lot of experience with the game and know how to manage my pips and throttle.

However, I can see that a casual player with mediocre skills would be quite put off by the challenge they now face. This would include the (relative) newbies that just farmed credits and rank with easy AI kills and Robigo runs. While I assume that the first reaction of the hardcore community would be a shrug and "git gud" message, I ask you to think again. ED already has not the greatest reputation for being accessible to newbies and casuals - and that reputation is probably going to take another hit. As a consequence, sales to new players and season pass sales to casuals may suffer. This, in turn, might greatly hurt FDev's bottom line and in consequence endanger the long term viability of the game.

Thus, FDev (and we) should listen to the complaints about the UI. Maybe a NPC difficulty slider would be appropriate, with harder settings giving better combat-related rewards (military rank, combat rating, credits, materials etc) and possibly a trade bonus. This might reconcile the casuals without taking the fun away from the "hardcore" players.

TL;DR: new AI is nice, but maybe too much for casuals and less skilled players. This might hurt sales and thus future development. A difficulty slider adjusting AI challenge and rewards might help to reconcile this.

Great post and saves me writing my opinion out as it seems it could have been written by me. 100% Agree!

Yes on both counts. Hi security systems means you'll get the authorities arriving quicker. Also, in general, Combat ranks of the NPC's you come across are scaled to your combat rank. Same is true with your mission choices.

I highly advise that players choose their battles wisely and-if you can't gain the initiative quickly enough-then learn when to RUN AWAY. Also, bigger isn't always better when it comes to ships. A sidewinder or Eagle in the hands of a Dangerous or Elite pilot is NASTY!!! Trust me on this!

You dont. Been flying sideys and haulers in beta4 and earned loads.

Personally, I think deadly+ should be the norm. Shouldn't all the weaklings be getting spaced already?
If that were the case, new, often poorly equipped players would pretty much be killed at every interdiction. Making these higher ranked opponents less frequently encountered gives people a chance to improve their abilities and equipment.
Maybe they become less rare as you move a hundred or so light years away from starting systems.

Voted other.

Reason being Master rated NPC and above are pretty much just right. But anything rated under that and the AI becomes zombie-like again so could do with some tuning to make them more interesting to fight.

...

Although this was frustrating and I turned the air blue for a bit, I shall be back and will be better prepared next time. I just hope I meet him again and can kick hi...

Thanks for the cautionary tale. I'll get some missile defences.

This reminds me of the men who go to curry houses and and for the hottest thing on the menu, because they are men, you know, and they can take it.

My first mouthful of the new AI proved a little hot for me, but I only had time for a little taster as I had a few problems downloading the upgrade and it was quite late at night when I'd managed to get in. I'm going to give it a few days before I vote. I'm going to see what I can do do mitigate the spiciness of the action.

I can see an effect that spicy foods and spicy space fighting will have in common. In both cases my back end is going to be on fire.

I would love to have had that option when I was interdicted by a deadly pilot, but they destroyed my shields inside 20 seconds and my thrusters 10 seconds after that. Couldn't Frame Shift away as they were too close from the off. That's ok though, so long as it isn't the norm on every trip. I like a challenge, and the occasional beating builds character and a healthy respect for all opponents.

Question,

Are those highly difficult NPC's frequent in trading and combat missions that don't require high pilot ranks? You know, those you skip because they ain't "worth your time" ;)

The Mobius forums/FB group are hilarious right now. SO MANY TEARS! I'm betting the amount of combat logging against NPC's is going to skyrocket now :)
