[DISCUSSION] E: D vs STO

I don't like fandom at all no matter the sport, movie, game whatever.
And yes i do find it sad that people continue to play a game they fundamentally don't like just because it says Star Trek on the box, Just like i would find it sad if people forced themselves to play Frontier even if they didn't like it.
OK, I agree with you on this, if you don't like a game, stop playing it.
(and happy that it's not only Trekkies you were referring to)

Honestly, I agree with most of the others in that I don't really feel that STO lived up to its potential. That isn't to say it isn't something that some people will enjoy but it wasn't what I was looking for in a space game, especially not a Star Trek game.

That being said, I did buy into it back in closed BETA and I have a Lifetime account. I just don't play it that much anymore due to the shifts I've felt have been largely negative. Now and then they do add some interesting things that make me mess around in it at least a little bit but it's not the kind of game I'm looking for and I don't think it's a model that will or should be imitated by Elite.

Hello everyone.

I have to admit that I'm a Sto veteran. Built up over 17000 accolade points and to put that in perspective for people who haven't played, you can hit the top rank from about 2500 accolade points. As the number increases, it becomes more and more difficult to find the remaining accolades / invest the amount of time to complete them. I played since just after launch, have loads of ships with well thought out consoles, engines, shields, everything - literally! Even programmed 112 voice macros and on Sto that's rare, glad to see its so massive on Ed! Back to the macros for me! Haha.

My opinion on Sto now is fairly negative when compared to ED. I like star trek for its theoretical physics... So why is the game so flat/ 2 dimensional. Why are all the ships, shuttles, stations and planets ridiculously out of scale? ED is spot on in this regard.

Combat - contrary to some people's views, I actually enjoy the combat, it takes skill and intelligence to build an effective vessel and use it well. ED though can be summarised in one word - wow! It's amazing. The control of the ship is one key factor that blew me away when I first played in ED beta.

One thing Sto has is good graphics and they're developing more worlds that are interesting and unique but very constricted. You can't explore as such, so again I have to think that ED will be better next year even for FPS, to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no one has gone before...

Oh! 1 sec! Lol

Ive been playing STO for around 18 months now and jumped at the chance of playing my childhood favourite game Elite again!
Very much frustrated by the serious bugs and recurring ones after every major installment of new content by the STO team.
I will still pop on and meet up with my fleet mates but the numbers are dwindling due to all the crap we (they) have to put up with.
It would be great if there was some more multiplayer content here as im sure i could persuade a few who dont know about Elite to come over, time will tell :)

I played STO, bought into the lifetime subs as I'm a big trekkie as well ( and was royally annoyed when it became free to play). Played it for a while, with friends, and then stopped. I was bored with every mechanic in the game. ED is not STO thankfully, and let's keep it that way.

I really liked the idea of STO and played it for a while but I got really fed up with the same thing that annoys me about so many online games including that other space one, the tune base combat. They have just taken a board game including all the dice rolls and put it on a PC, in ED a Sidewinder is never going to get a lucky critical hit on a cobra that bypasses a it's shield and stuns them for two turns. Almost no skill involved just the roll of a dice to see if you hit and how much damage and then wait for them to have a go, more like a game of conkers than combat.

I play STO now and then. I still like it, played it since the first day it came out. A lot of thing changed, not everything to the best, but for a fan it's still worth playing. It feels more like a mmo than ED. It's difficult to compare them. I will continue to play both. There will be days when I just don't want to trade or explore and just dive into some action. That's where STO is better. But then again ED is not even released official now. Let's just wait a few weeks and then we will see.

I played STO a bit when it first came out. Hated the away team stuff, but flying was ok. The worst bit about flying though was not having a 3D world, if you tried to do a loop in certain directions you'd end up stuck pointing up or down and be unable to carry on in that direction. Why they didn't use a 3d capable game engine for space I have no idea. Maybe none on the market as they weren't developing their own. Had loads of balance issues (think I ended up in a combat ship with an engineer pilot, which seemed a bit overpowered), but it was the flight model that put me off. I've not hit anything like that in ED.

I hope it's not just me, but this STO thing looks like utter . I just watched some letsplays and I was disgusted by every element of its gameplay (FPS, space-combat, interaction between players and graphics).
There is no way to compare these two games - the only thing they have in common is that they are space-themed

Ah, it's fun for a while. Like some regular non-MMO title you play for a month or two then put away.

Well, STO comes with a very optimistic and bright setting. So Utopian you can't even play the bad guys properly. Elite Dangerous on the other hand, is more... ah... practical, in that there aren't really any good guys, just a selection of the usual suspects. And to be quite honest, that feels more real somehow... !
