New update now that Odyssey has been announced...
First, a brief insight into our potential planning of a new Distant Worlds expedition:
Distant Worlds events are a large community effort, they take a lot of time to put together, and its a big sacrifice of peoples spare time once they commit to the project. For example; DW1 took 5 months planning, whereas DW2 took twice that.
There are around 40 people in the Distant Worlds organisation team, many of them were there right at the beginning for the first one (DW1), back in 2016, and many more who joined to help put DW2 together three years later. The team is made up of players that have experience across a wide variety of content creation for Elite Dangerous. These include community initiatives like EDSM, the DSSA, Hull Seals, Rock Rats, CoR, the Galactic Mapping Project, FleetComm, ED Streamers, Fuel Rats, Distant Radio, and even an official Elite Dangerous author, as well as individual organisers from some large non-DW related expeditions too.
For another Distant Worlds event to occur, the majority of that team need to be as active and passionate about the game today, as they were back when they worked on DW1 & DW2. In addition, we feel there needs to be something to build a DW3 around, whether that's new engaging exploration-related content and gameplay, or the possibility of creating an event based on utilizing existing game assets and features that inspire enough players to want to take part. The DW2 CG is a good example of the latter. What we didn't want to do is a simple sight seeing tour since DW has evolved beyond that by being able to incorporate many roles other than just exploration (mining, scouting, and hauling for example, which were well received during the DW2 CG).
So with all that in mind, its doubtful there will be another DW event until some of those key aspects are once again in place. And although it looks like the first iteration of Odyssey will be adding a couple things that look interesting for exploration (i.e. walking on worlds and new land-able worlds to visit), we feel its probably best for us to hold off putting together a potential DW3 until more news is announced and to see if more exploration content will be revealed with later iterations of the Odyssey update.
Hopefully later this year there will be more info about this o7.
New update on the above - March 2022 ...
Update on behalf of the Distant Worlds team, March 2022:
With the announcement that Odyssey content will no longer be coming to consoles, we want to address the ongoing inquiries about a potential third Distant Worlds expedition. Unfortunately, under the current circumstances, such an event is unlikely to happen anytime soon—if at all.
The success of DW1 and DW2 was made possible by the incredible creativity, dedication, and time of a diverse team of contributors. Many of these team members are console-only players, and Frontier’s decision to discontinue Odyssey support for consoles means that many of our friends and collaborators would be unable to participate. This, alongside other factors outlined below, has led us to the difficult decision to indefinitely retire the Distant Worlds events.
Distant Worlds has been about creating large-scale community events built on new game content—pioneering fresh ideas and utilizing the latest gameplay features. Repeating a Horizons-based event doesn’t align with our goals, as that chapter of exploration has already been extensively covered. Any future expedition would need to be built on new, compelling content introduced in Odyssey, accessible to all players.
Additionally, when DW1 launched in 2016, its tagline,
"Tracing one warm line through a land so vast and savage," captured the spirit of the era. Back then, exploration was raw and challenging— with everyone venturing into the black in low-range ships knowing there would be minimal support if anything went wrong. That allure of the unknown and uncertainty was a major factor during the whole experience. The game has since evolved, with ships capable of 70+ LY jumps and now Fleet Carriers. And while these advancements have expanded gameplay, they have also diminished that trepidation many of us felt back in the day. Recreating that essence of the journey we had on the pervious two events would be difficult at this moment in time, unless one is new to the game or has never participated in such events before.
That said, we’re not closing the door entirely. The pilot light for a future DW-type event remains lit through our official organizers’ server (linked below). And should the majority of our console team eventually migrate to the PC, coupled with us being confident that we could produce something compelling enough based off whatever new content is available at the time, then the idea of a DW3 event may one day be revisited.
Thank you for your understanding and continued support.
— The Distant Worlds Organization Team
In the meantime, for those looking for alternatives to DW-type events, check the expeditions page on EDSM to see whose doing what. We hope people will support those expeditions as much as they supported the Distant Worlds events of the past.

Note: all my replies in this thread posted after this one (post#15) were made before the Console announcement from Frontier, so any news/info I posted in them regarding a DW3 is now obsolete.
