Distant Worlds - A journey beyond the Abyss

I like the idea of the Thargoids being out there right now and the developers are watching as the players slowly expand out into the galaxy and ever so narrowly missing encountering them. They probably have an updated image in Frontiers HQ of the expansion of the human race. And when a single player does encounter the Thargoids they'll get chased all the way back to the bubble! The Thargoids will probably be some part of space that's not an obvious place to visit, like half way in somewhat to the left of the galactic core.

CMDR Gauth here.
I think it's time to update my info. I will be flying Viper (Nails) so around 25Ly range, piloting from Poland (UTC + 1). I can easily afford ASPX but I just like new guy too much.

All joking aside, considering the maneuverability and shielding of most of our ships, the multitude of communication channels and the lack of fast visual identification, something like Interstellar Regulations for Preventing Collisions in Space and on Planets might be useful. :)

Oh god!!! Does that mean I'll have to break out the plotting sheets and start worrying about aspect..?

In all seriousness, those regs break down pretty fast when there's more than two ships involved IRL anyway. Guess we'll just have to pay attention.

That'll be probably me where I am exploring it looks like no one has really bothered with the area but I am encountering lots and lots of wreckage and stuff in orbit around planets and Stars much more than I ever have even in the bubble and in conflict zones. poo-smiley thing is with my F10 screen shot issue I probably wont be able to document it.

I just hope they cant jump more than 22 LY in a go.

I was thinking more along simple lines like "evade to starboard", "pass on port" and "give way to underpowered Anacondas". :)

Like I mentioned a few days ago, with 350 pilots on this trip, we could do with an experienced air traffic controller too :D
I have some experience, although in my last job, my laid back attitude towards it didn't work out too well.

If you do, what would you need from a dedicated support ship?

My reply to this seems to have gone missing. Anyway, I signed up for Distant World's for the social aspect of it. I don't actually care about getting to Beagle's Point, I just want to be useful. I have an Asp but haven't yet decided on any kind of role. How could you benefit from an Asp helping you on your way? Getting a sidewinder to the other side of the galaxy really appeals to me. It's a crazy endeavour which people will automatically think that you shouldn't do. Which is precisely why you should!

That's a weird thing with posts these days. Mine sometimes disappear too only to re-emerge some minutes later.
And thanks for the offers of help guys! I have a feeling that there are going to be more of us crazy heads in the end.
Re particular help - I will be prospecting for materials on either ship with a tortoise in the back (I find it most comfortable to crawl on moons with low G and such at a speed of 4kph, hence - the tortoise). I would very much like to take an SRV with me as driving in packs should be fun. An eagle could do it if without AFMU and with Bi-shields. A sidewinders' range is gimped down to 18LY with the 2G hangar though... and the trouble with the sidey is that it's total range is only 44LY vs at least 51 on the eagle. So afraid of getting stuck somewhere by mistake.
Nonetheless the idea of sidewinder was appealing even before Mangel posted it. That only gave me more courage. So will see in the next couple of days how I feel with a smaller range.
But I would generally enjoy the company! and some fail-safe fuel tank ready to respond to a cry of a lowly sidewinder for rocket fuel :)

Oh I know! I know!
One thing that either of ships will not allow me either way is to bring tea! unless I can pack it into the rover... but I mean - it's not a journey to any point without that "best tea and cookies in the world... or, well, best on the top of this windy hill after a 1500 feet climb anyway and there no other teas and cookies available atm"...

I'm thinking this is going to be my Anaconda's build. I'm still debating on bringing an additional fuel tank or hauling some fuel limpets. I really don't want to go below 34.5 jump range though...

My advice would be to take a Sidewinder or Eagle out to Shapley 1 (the first waypoint) and see how you feel with their ranges and fuel scoop times. That's a 2,000 LY round trip, there and back, and it will give you an idea whether or not its something you can enjoy for the long trip ahead. :)

I would encourage you to fit an SRV though as exploring these distant worlds with other players in SRVs, crossing mountains, and driving though ravines etc, is a lot to miss out on if you can't join them. Plus its nice to get out of the cockpit and do something new after a long flight between waypoints.

My thinking exactly. Thank you Erimus! On the SRV and on Shapley. Going to go through the materials spread sheet and see what's on the way to Shapley too.

As a side thought. I hope one day frontiers is going to give us a class 1 rover hangar. Small, unmanned, remotely controlled with limited speed/range/fuel (could make it on solar panels too) and reserved resource collection ability toy we could all roll out of a small ship.

Now that we have Jumonium.
I think the problem with taking the Sidewinder or Eagle more than anything is the Fuel tank as you'll need to constantly check the galaxy map for fuelable stars constantly. At least we can all help out with Fuelratting if needed now too.

I already know pretty much full well what I'm getting myself into, having flown an Orca to Sagittarius A*, which happens to have pretty much the exact same scoop time and roughly the same range.

It's going to be a blast :D

On another note, I finally have some time off work for the holidays, so I'm going to be cruising around hunting for materials. My goal is to leave with at least a few premium boosts, if only to facilitate the jump(s) to and from Beagle Point.

In regards to help, all I can really ask is that if anyone has some extra time and would like to buddy up to go prospecting for boost materials that I'd need during the rendevous/checkpoint breaks. Obviously, if you need them as well, you have first say as you'd be doing all the work.

We've got several rats coming along who are more than happy to help everyone out.

As for scoopables, I believe as long as you stay slightly above the galactic plane, it should be fine. Someone can correct that if it's not entirely correct, most of my experience "exploring" is actually just several straight lines between Sol and Sagittarius A*. The Aucoks and I are good friends...

If you want a buddy before we set off, hit me up on #ratchat, i've been prospecting like crazy just recently and have been keeping notes of which planets i've been finding stuff :)

Steamlined has already promised to stalk follow alongside me, I'll hit you up if I manage to shake him leave him in the proverbial dust... :p

I will be away the first week of Jan, but before and after that I could use a buddy myself and would always welcome company.
Depending on my job interviews in Jan and such I will probably head out early too (and hopefully NOT crash or suffocate or burn myself to crisp some first 500LY away from the bubble). Will be certain to keep you up to speed on my progress.
Cheers and Happy 3302nd(or is it?) Christmas to everybody!

I reckon it will be less than 250 that start, 150 that make it to Sag A, and 50 to Beagle point. Then again my glass is always half empty...
